Global Rehabilitation Alliance

This month the WCPT President and CEO attended a stakeholder meeting to discuss establishing a Global Rehabilitation Alliance. The meeting follows the WHO Stakeholder
Meeting Rehabilitation 2030: A Call for Action in February last year.

WCPT believes a Global Rehabilitation Alliance can be a unified voice to strengthen rehabilitation in health to achieve the vision of a world where everyone has access to rehabilitation by:
  • engaging a diverse and comprehensive community of stakeholders;
  • fostering a common understanding of rehabilitation as a health strategy;
  • advocating with one voice at a global level.
The vision of the Global Rehabilitation Alliance is a world where every person has access to timely, quality, user-centred rehabilitation services. Its mission is to advocate for the provision rehabilitation as an integral component of Universal Health Coverage, and to be a strong, cohesive body of stakeholders united to further the development of rehabilitation around the world.
There is strong global support for this alliance. At the conclusion of the meeting stakeholders agreed to reconvene in Geneva in May where organisations will be ask to commit to the founding of this entity.

International conference on health professional regulation

Margot Skinner, WCPT Vice President, will be speaking at the Fifth
World Health Professions Regulation Conference , taking place  19th - 20th May 2018 in Geneva. Titled " Mutual recognition: helping professionals move more freely" her presentation will focus on  her experiences of the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition (TTMR) Arrangement.  Dr Skinner will share her experiences around the mutually agreed thresholds for professional standards and describe the benefits of the TTMR.

"The agreement requires professionals to register with authorities, so they don't have to jump through all the same hoops to practise," she explains.

Dr Skinner highlights that the agreement between Australia and New Zealand enables each country's professional workforce to come from a bigger pool. Professionals are also able to undertake courses and post graduate qualifications without the usual barriers.

WCPT has announced that the Confederation's award-winning biennial Congress will take place in Dubai in 2021.

Speaking at the Emirates Physiotherapy Conference today, WCPT President Emma Stokes confirmed Dubai as the location for the Congress, which will be hosted by the Emirates Physiotherapy Society.
"The Emirates Physiotherapy Society is uniquely located, and Dubai offers the chance for the global physical therapy community to meet in a destination that links Europe, Asia and Africa," says Emma.
"Once again, like in Cape Town, we are inviting the global community to join us in a part of the world we have not visited before for Congress. A first for the gulf states, we congratulate the Emirates Physiotherapy Society on their successful bid, and look forward to learning and sharing all we can."
"The Emirates Physiotherapy Society are pleased and proud to have been chosen to host the WCPT Congress 2021," says EPS President Amal Alshamlan.

"It has been a strategic goal for the society, aligned with government strategy, to bring such a prestigious event to Dubai. The Congress will bring incredible value to the physiotherapy profession in the UAE and regionally. The excitement has started already to build."
After a competitive bidding process and site visits, the WCPT Board agreed that the Emirates Physiotherapy Society, which has been a WCPT member since 2007, offers an exciting and distinctive Congress location.

The WCPT Congress is now held every two years. Following one of the most successful Congresses in Cape Town, 2017, the 2019 Congress will be held in Geneva 10-13 May.

In 2016 the WCPT Congress 2015 was recognised for excellence, winning Best Association Conference at the Singapore Tourism Awards.

It was recognised again in 2017 with the WCPT Congress in Cape Town winning an Incredible Impacts award for its range of outstanding legacy activities that benefitted Africa and the wider community.

WCPT CONGRESS UPDATES
The WCPT General Meeting and Congress in 2019 will be hosted by physioswiss, the Swiss Physiotherapy Association, and held in Geneva, WCPT's Executive Board has announced.

At the conclusion of the bidding and reviewing process, which involved site visits to three destinations, the Board selected the bid from physioswiss, a WCPT member since 1963.

"We were so grateful to receive three bids of such a high quality," said WCPT President Emma Stokes. "It will be wonderful to welcome delegates from around the world to the beautiful city of Geneva, home to the European headquarters of the United Nations, the World Health Organization, the International Committee of the Red Cross and many other global organisations."

The WCPT Executive Board was particularly impressed by the commitment and preparation shown by physioswiss in its congress bid, which has strong backing from the local Geneva Canton (state). The location provides opportunities for the profession to collaborate with international non-governmental organisations.

"Physioswiss is very committed to making the congress a great success and we are looking forward to working with the Swiss physiotherapy community to deliver another exciting global event," said Emma Stokes.
The WCPT Congress is now held every two years.

Roland Paillex, President of physioswiss, said the association was delighted by the news. "I have received many positive reactions to our candidature, and the news that we have been chosen as hosts will cause even more enthusiasm," he said.

"Welcoming the world of physiotherapy to the WCPT Congress 2019 goes with our tradition of hospitality and provides an excellent opportunity for our members to learn from diverse international experience. I promise that we will present our country and our profession in the best possible light, and would like to thank WCPT for their confidence. We will do everything we can to ensure the 2019 WCPT Congress is a success."

Geneva is situated on the banks of Lake Geneva at the foot of the Alps. It has a long history of diversity and tolerance and today is a major cultural centre.

The city's most famous landmark is the Jet d'Eau - the world's tallest water fountain. It has more than 30 museums and art galleries including the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Popular visitor attractions are cruising on the lake, relaxing in a waterfront park, wandering through the Old Town and shopping on the famous Market Street.

Record number of focused symposium proposals submitted

A record 103 focused symposium submissions were received. This is a hugely exciting start to the WCPT Congress 2019 and builds the foundations for an innovative, topical and relevant programme in Geneva. Thank you #globalPT!

Watch out for announcements later in May when the selected focused symposia will be published.
