Supporting Parents & Families in Gold Beach
The Curry Public Library set out on a new adventure in the fall of 2018. As a new recipient of the 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) grant, they were charged with creating an afterschool program that engages and serves the youth and families of Central Curry School District. The program focuses on giving middle school youth a safe, supervised environment where they can be physically active, academically supported, and exposed to new opportunities that inspire and motivate youth during these critical years of development.
Within a district that serves less than 500 students, on the southern Oregon coast, in the community of Gold Beach with population just over 2,200 people, this program works hard to engage and serve families through several key pieces of program offerings:
- Providing transportation home daily
- Supporting school day academics with daily homework help and access to teachers
- Weekly Math Monday support open to 3rd-10th grade with additional high school mentors
- Coordinated scheduling with athletic & other extracurricular opportunities to support seamless transition from school to homework to athletics to home
- Quarterly family and community events, including Gingerbread House Contest, Literacy Guest Speaker, and activity night take home bags
Along with specific activities, the ASCEND program works hard to keep parents informed of what happens from day to day through regular social media postings, bi-monthly schedule of activities, and open communication about student needs and interests. To help meet the needs of families, the program will also provide weekly summer programming opportunities, both through the library summer reading program and with regularly scheduled options, such as Zero Robotics. We are looking forward to see how this program continues to grow and thrive, becoming an integral part of the community and system that supports students as well as families.

Policy Updates on Supporting Student Success
After spending over 1 year hearing from youth, educators, stakeholders, and parents, the Joint Committee on Supporting Student Success created a framework, funding outline, and accountability system that could increase student outcomes across Oregon. That work is defined in the Student Success Act, a $1 billion annual investment to school districts, Education Service Districts, and early learning providers to create a more comprehensive system to support our most vulnerable youth.
The Student Success Act has passed both House and Senate with strong support from many educators, and even the Oregon Business Industry, a member-driven advocacy organization, working for sound public policy on behalf of the business community, was neutral (meaning not officially opposed) on the legislation that will create a business revenue tax. However, the process is not over yet. As partners in this work, you all play a crucial role in helping share about the importance of expanded learning programs and services in seeing underserved, vulnerable youth find success in school and beyond. You are welcome to use one of these templates to share your story about supporting families, providing summer learning, or inspiring student dreams with local legislators, champions, and decision makers at this critical time in the process for building long-term systems of support.

Federal Legislators Making a Stand for Youth
In Washington DC, federal legislators continue to make a stand for youth, supporting legislation and funding appropriations for afterschool and summer meals, as well as 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) grants. While the fight is not over yet, it is encouraging to see many from both sides of the room, supporting critical programs for Oregon youth. Next Phase of our Afterschool Access and Equity Research Project
The OregonASK team traveled around the state over the last year to see what afterschool looks like and understand the unique barriers in different parts of the state. Not only have we heard from those as we traveled, we've had hundreds of programs provide information through our online surveys. If you haven't had the chance yet, it isn't too late to add your voice and be entered in raffle drawing - Take our Program Management or Site Survey Staff Today!
Our next phase of work starts this summer with our Data Design Team and stakeholders from various roles around Oregon to analyze the feedback we've received and make recommendations on tools and resources that would be most helpful to address identified challenges. Summer Opportunities
FREE Girl Up STEM Camp
Girl Up is excited to be hosting a Women in Science (WiSci) STEAM camp in Bend Oregon for girls in 7th-9th grade! WiSci Camps are a once in a lifetime opportunity for young women to take a deep dive into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Design, and Math) alongside peers and develop their leadership skills in a unique cross-cultural environment. WiSci camps are safe environments that bring together 100 teen girls from three countries or more to live and learn for two weeks together! Facilitators will teach girls to value risk taking, to bounce back after failing and to build resilience!

We are so happy to continue our relationship with national and state partners that make this work as fruitful as possible.
