Office Bulletin
Dear South School Community,
Thank you so much for another amazing year! This village is thriving thanks to all of you and our staff! We are ever grateful for all of our PTO volunteers who worked to make so many activities and special events happen all year. All of these efforts are the spice of school life for our children!!! A huge thank you goes out to this year's executive board: Kerry Ni, Emily Kelly, Betsy Crouch, Jennie Donegan, and Jen Benham, who worked tirelessly to orchestrate all of these happenings and create the perfect symphony that was our 17-18 awesome year!!! A special thank you goes out to Kerry Ni who has been the PTO president for the last two years. We are ever grateful for all she has done for SES in her many years as a parent here, and we are sorry to see her move on. The legacy she has left is a wonderful one!

As you know the first day of school for grades 1-5 is Tuesday, September 4, and Thursday, September 6 for kindergarten. Kindergarten children and parents are invited to "Meet and Greet" at 9:30-11:00 on Tuesday, September 4. All new families are invited to our New Families Reception at 2:00 PM on Thursday, August 30th. The school is open from 7-3 during the summer, but please call ahead if you plan to visit as we may be cleaning the area you want to access. Expect a principal's newsletter around August 10 and class assignments in the mail around August 18-19. Thank you for understanding how much work goes into placement and that we cannot make changes after lists are final.

Have a fantastic, restful and safe summer!!!

Quote of the week: There's only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving and that is your own self!!!

NEW News you can use:
  • Last DAY: The last day of school for students will be this Wednesday, June 20. Dismissal will be at NOON and NO LUNCH will be served. The last day for teachers is Thursday, June 21. Have a fantastic summer, everyone!!! See you in September!!!
  • Please check your children's lunch account balances as many of them are in the red...we know it gets busy this time of the year, so we thank you for checking the accounts.
  • It was so nice to honor the parents who are leaving South School at our final Buzz Assembly last Friday. We will miss them, and we are so appreciative for everything they have done for our village! A special thank you to Kerry Ni, our PTO President !!!
  • Our annual Books for Brockton collection took place over the last couple of weeks. The Brockton Adult Learning Center collects children's books that encourage family literacy. We have donated over 1000 books in the past. We added many more to that donation this year!!! Thank you for your donations! We also thank Mr. McNulty for coordinating this each year!!!
  • We wish a wonderful congratulations to Mrs. Clare Paget who has taught fourth grade for twenty years here at SES!!! She has decided to retire at the end of this school year. We are truly grateful for ALL of her years of service and for being a wonderful colleague and staff member!!! We are sad to lose her, but we wish her a WONDERFUL retirement enjoying her growing family!!!
  • IMPORTANT PARKING BULLETIN: Due to the fact that the street gets blocked for emergency vehicles, we will no longer be able to park on Loring Hill. The only exception will be the live parking for Special Dismissal. Please do not block driveways or drive on lawns while waiting there. The Lutheran Church has a large lot and has always been happy to accommodate us!!! Please walk, carpool, park at a friend who lives close by or use the Lutheran Church option if you can.
  • All of the Lost and Found items have been put in the front hallway. Please have your child check, and feel free to check yourself as you come in to the building. There are quite a few expensive winter jackets as well as mittens, hats etc...!
  • Third Grade parents are welcome to attend our recorder concerts. They will happen in the Music Room on the various days. Please arrive by 9:45 AM. Please remember to walk, car pool, park at the Lutheran Church etc... Please do not use Loring Hill Rd ! The last remaining concert is 3Mc, Monday, 6/18 @ 9:50.
  • Thank you for understanding that we have a policy that children only attend the events in their grade level (during the day). It would be very difficult for the classroom teachers to teach on grade level event days if siblings of children involved were constantly being pulled to attend events. Please rest assured that all SES children will experience all events when they get to each grade level. The only exception to this is the Fifth Grade Farewell Ceremony on the second to last day of school, Tuesday, June 19 @ 1:00 PM. Parents may choose to have children dismissed for that event.
  • The first day of school is scheduled for Tuesday, September 4, for grades 1-5 and Thursday, September 6, for kindergarten.
  • South School Survey Sent: Please take time to answer the very simple survey we sent on Tuesday 6/5.
Have a great week!!!  ME and LJ (:

5th Annual 50 Flags Campaign Kick Off!
It is time to kick off the 5th annual 50 Flags Campaign.  All of the net proceeds from the program are used to help pay the annual $40,000 operating cost of the Hingham 4th of July Parade. There are no tax dollars used for the parade which relies upon donors, sponsors and fundraisers such as button sales, the Annual Selectmen's' Golf Tournament and the 50 Flags Campaign.
Last year's program had a record number of 11,000 flags installed around Hingham and this year's goal is 13,000 flags. For a donation of $50.00, 50 flags are installed for a week at a person's home, a friend's home or a veterans home. Flag orders may be made online by  clicking here and selecting 50 Flags Campaign. The site will allow you to select the week or weeks for the installations. Orders for the week of July 1st to July 8th must be made no later than June 27th or until supplies last. IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT LUNCH FOR JUNE 2018
Due to the Fifth Grade Farwell Ceremony being held in the cafeteria, please be aware that all students will be eating lunch in their classrooms on Tuesday, June 19th. If child is in a peanut/tree nut free classroom, please DO NOT send in any peanut and/or tree nut foods for lunch with your child on those days. Students will still be able to buy lunch and school lunches are always peanut and tree nut free. Thank you for your cooperation.

Spring in finally here!!! While enjoying the nice weather, please remember these tips to help keep your children happy and healthy this season...
  • Apply sun block to your child every day before school
  • Make sure children take their allergy medications daily if they suffer from seasonal allergies
  • Check your child daily for ticks and apply insect repellent before school and any time they play outside. Please be aware that some classes may go out to the nature trail for field science and gym class. Be particularly attentive in checking for ticks, other insect bites and poison ivy, sumac or oak rashes, if they have been in the woods.
  • It is important to be familiar with the signs and symptoms of Lyme disease. Please refer to the following link from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) for more information about Lyme disease. /https://www.cdc.gov/lyme/
  • Send in a water bottle every day for your child to drink from throughout the day.
  • As always, please frequently check your child for head lice...they are around, no matter what the season.
Thank you!
