Dear Jones Family,

When I hold our graduation rehearsal each year, I always ask the seniors who the ceremony is for. Almost invariably they respond, "Us!" That, of course, is understandable. We are indeed celebrating an important milestone in their lives.

However, I take the opportunity to challenge them. "Not exactly," I reply. "It is ABOUT you, but it is FOR all those people who will be there to celebrate your graduation." It is for family, friends, teachers, and all the others who have served as our graduates' support teams over the past four years. That is why the theme of this year's graduation ceremony is
gratitude.

For me, I am grateful to our wonderful, motivated students and their supportive families. There are so many things we would not be able to do for our students if it were not for the continuing efforts of the Friends of Jones.

And especially, I am grateful to our amazing team of educators, teachers, counselors, administrators, and support staff who dedicate themselves to providing the best possible education. Our faculty and staff have contributed mightily to building an inclusive, supportive, and positive school environment unmatched by any I have experienced in more than forty years in the field.

Thank you, Jones Family, for another great year at JCP!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me any time at [email protected] or 773-534-8606. For news about our school, please follow me on Twitter:

Sincerely,

Spanish Honor Society - 2018 National Award!
Spanish Honor Society
Jones College Prep's Diego Velázquez Chapter of the Spanish Honor Society (la Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica) was awarded National Chapter of the Year for 2018!

The induction ceremony.

This past year, the Chapter raised funds for hurricane victims in Puerto Rico and earthquake victims in Mexico by selling horchata at Open House and bracelets made by young people in Nicaragua. They also volunteered their time during AcLab to tutor other students in Spanish classes and offered latin dance lessons twice this year thanks to grants from Friends of Jones. They also successfully hosted the first dance at school with music all in Spanish,
Noche Bajo las Estrellas.
The group teamed up with ALAS to visit Casa Central spending time doing crafts and playing games with the Spanish-speaking elderly in their Adult Wellness Center.

Members this past year contributed nearly 600 hours volunteering in school, in their communities and abroad and learning about different cultures by visiting museums and events.

The success will continue as 52 new members were inducted this year, at a ceremony that debuted Jones' own mariachi group, El Mariachi Águilas.

The Spanish Honor Society is a national and international organization under the AATSP (American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese) has over 2500 chapters across the world. Up to five chapters are recognized as chapter of the year each year. They will receive $150 and a plaque.

Congratulations to Jones Spanish Honor Society!
