Happy Cinco de Derby, Y'all! It's an especially fun time when these two holidays fall on the same day and, whether you are celebrating with mint juleps, or margaritas (or both - we don't judge), this Saturday is bound to be full of festivity in the Bluegrass!
The Run for the Roses is a time-honored Kentucky tradition and, every spring, it also marks the kickoff of several AIA Kentucky traditions. This week, we are launching both our annual summer code workshops and our 2018 design awards program - with our service award nominations soon to follow. These programs, plus the A'18 Conference in New York City, will keep us busy throughout the summer and before you know it we'll be gathering in Columbus, Indiana for an "out of the box" state conference at the Exhibit Columbus Symposium.
Much has been happening and MUCH lies ahead, so we hope you will read on for additional details and announcements. We look forward to seeing each of you in the months ahead and, in the meantime, we wish you a wonderful Derby weekend!

Annual Code Workshops - Four Dates, Four Cities!
AIA Kentucky has once again teamed with the Code Administrators Association of Kentucky and the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction to host our annual Code Workshop series in June. This year's workshop will focus on the 2018 KBC* and will offer 6 AIA LU | HSW. Click here for online registration. The dates and locations are:
- Tuesday, June 12 - Louisville
- Thursday, June 14 - Owensboro
- Monday, June 18 - Erlanger
- Tuesday, June 19 - Versailles
Seating is limited at all locations, and these workshops typically sell out early. If you wish to attend one of the sessions, please register without delay.
*The Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction will soon be adopting the 2018 Kentucky Building Code and 2018 Kentucky Residential Code. The codes will be based on the 2015 International Building Code and 2015 International Residential Code, both with some Kentucky specific amendments. The amendments have been filed with the Legislative Research Commission and will be on their agenda in early June. A link to the proposed amendments will be posted as soon as possible.

AIA KY Honor Awards -
Call for Submissions!
Your firm has work that is worthy of recognition, and now is your chance! AIA Kentucky is accepting submissions for the 2018 Honor Awards for Excellence in Architectural Design, now until July 13th. Projects completed in the last 10 years are eligible and may be submitted in several categories, including Unbuilt Work.
Remember that the submission criteria has been significantly relaxed to allow more creative freedom in the presentation of your work so pick a project (or several) that you'd like to enter and have some fun with it! Visit www.aiaky.org/honorawards2018 to get started today!

A'18 - Kentucky Events in NYC
Heading to the Big Apple for the A'18 Conference on Architecture? Join your colleagues from Kentucky and the Ohio Valley Region for our state/regional gatherings while you're in town! First, we will have a regional luncheon at noon on Wednesday, June 20, in the Murray East Room at the NY Hilton Midtown. We hope you will come and hear updates on activity in the region. Stay tuned for an email invitation and link for registration coming soon.
Please also join us on Thursday, June 21 for a reception hosted jointly by AIA Kentucky and the UK College of Design! The gathering will take place at FXCollaborative (22 West 19th Street, New York, NY 10011), from 6:30-8:00 p.m., so stop in for a drink and a bite with Kentucky friends and alumni before you head off to your evening plans in the city! Watch for an email invitation to register, coming soon from the College of Design.
Finally, on Friday, June 22, the OVR will host a reception for Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio members, at which we'll recognize our region's new Fellows. This will take place from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the NY Hilton Midtown. An RSVP will be included in the coming invite, which will include all KY/OVR events for A'18.

AIA KY Thanks T. Rexford Cecil, AIA
On April 24th, the Kentucky Board of Architects honored Executive Director T. Rexford Cecil, AIA for his years of service and dedication to the profession of architecture in Kentucky. Mr. Cecil recently announced that he will be retiring as Executive Director of the Kentucky Board of Architects by the end of June, with his last day in the office expected to be the end of May.
The KY BOA has begun the process of identifying Mr. Cecil's replacement (view job posting),but may not proceed with selection until potential board reorganization efforts are settled. Mr. Cecil will assist the BOA in an advisory capacity as needed and will stay active on several NCARB committees. He also pledged his continued participation in AIA Kentucky, which he joined in 1974!
Thank you, Rex, for your many years of membership and service to our profession. CONGRATULATIONS and best of luck to you in your retirement!

Looking for extra help with your exam prep? We have opened our 'Sights on Success' program workshops for "à la carte" registration to all ARE candidates in Kentucky. These group study sessions include material presented by subject-matter experts and opportunities for Q&A with recent licensees.

I was fortunate to attend the Kentucky Board of Architects meeting last month as the Board honored Executive Director Rex Cecil, AIA, who will retire in a few weeks. Rex has been a trusted and valued colleague who has worked closely with me, Kelly, and lobbyist Greg Brotzge on a myriad of issues and initiatives during his tenure. He has been a tremendous advocate for strong enforcement of Kentucky's architectural licensing requirements and for upholding the values inherent in your profession as architects. His stature nationally was evident with the attendance at the meeting of NCARB CEO Mike Armstrong and two additional NCARB staff from Washington. His influence surely extends beyond Kentucky. We are grateful for his leadership and wish him well in his retirement.

I hope you saw the emails we've been sending out for several weeks to ALL members asking you to update your contact information for inclusion in this year's Membership Directory & Firm Profile publication. Over 57% of AIA Kentucky members completed the update by the April 30 deadline - THANK YOU!
We've also requested those firm principals whose payment of AIA Kentucky supplemental dues make them eligible for a Firm Profile listing to review and update the firm info as well. Slightly over 50% of the Firm Profiles have been reviewed and updated.
If you didn't respond to one or both of those requests to verify your information and think you DO need to make changes, please contact Kelly (859-221-0154). Even if you've recently made changes to your record in the AIA national database, we have to keep separate records here in our communications and registration systems, and we do not have a reliable way to track and incorporate all those changes as they take place. Oh, the blessing and curse of technology! We appreciate you helping us keep your information accurate. We'll be finalizing all information next week to send to our publisher.
