The Pastor's Notes
from the desk of Walter Cantwell

"It's just not fair."

I could hear the passion in one of our member's voice as she lamented what had taken place over the past two months. On a fateful day in April, she met a couple in need at the mall, and God would not let her walk by without speaking with them. A simple question has blossomed into a friendship where she has sought to be family for a couple without any family.

She learned the husband is a veteran, who moved to Myrtle Beach with the dream of starting a new life. But a couple of bad breaks led them to a place they never expected to experience. They are homeless.

In her mind, she was certain that they had not gone to the right place or asked the correct questions. A sense of determination set in as she strived to connect this couple with the appropriate agency. Not long into her journey, the reality set-in, and reality looked a lot different than she had expected. Instead of finding help, she found despair in an overlooked community.

Reasons why assistance wasn't available met them at every place. And when they finally found a place willing to assist, the first open appointment was in late June.

One day she ate with this couple at a local soup kitchen. Over lunch, she learned their story is the story of so many in our backyard. They are not an outlier.

Like many other people, this couple recently found work since businesses are coming alive with summer activity. It will take several paychecks to save for a deposit on a rental. What do we do in the in-between for this couple?

Leaving the hotel room provided for them by a Good Samaritan, the couple was prepared to sleep in the woods. All they wanted was not to be arrested.

Because of your generosity, Belin Memorial has a Pastor's Discretionary fund. We were able to work out a very favorable rate with one of the local hotels in the area so that this couple would have a place to sleep over the next week. A couple of days have been bought as they move toward their future in securing the next place on their journey.

As my conversation was wrapping up with this church member, she expressed that she was not done fighting for this couple. Veterans deserve better services and care. As we prepare to celebrate Memorial Day, our member will be contacting our United States Senator and other governmental agencies. With a continued sense of determination, she will be the voice for the voiceless.

I am proud to call Belin Memorial my church home because it is filled with passionate people willing to love as Jesus loved. Don't pass up an opportunity to forge a friendship. It might just change your life and give them hope at the same time.

Keep being a Good Samaritan, church!

2020 Blessing of the Inlet T-Shirt Design

Would you like to create and submit a design for next year's Blessing of the Inlet t-shirt? You do not have to be an artist to make a contribution! We have a graphic artist who will help create the final design. The theme for 2020 is "Living in love and unity with one another" based off of Psalm 133:1 which says "How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity."

Please submit to  [email protected]  by September 30, 2019. The Blessing t-shirt committee will review all ideas and select one for next year's t-shirt.  Design should reflect upon the theme and scripture for the Blessing of the Inlet 2020. It should also include in the design the words "The Blessing of the Inlet," 24th Annual, scripture verse and the church name: Belin Memorial United Methodist Church. Limit to 4 colors or less. Samples of previous t-shirts can be seen on the Blessing of the Inlet website. Be creative! Let's hear from you !!
