Ramadan Kareem and Eid Mubarak!
Cumberland Council is fortunate to be one of the most diverse Local Government Areas in Sydney with people from many different backgrounds living side by side.
Of the 220,000 people who call Cumberland home, nearly half were born overseas, more than 60 per cent speak a language other than English and our ancestors can be traced to over 150 countries.
In Cumberland we welcome everyone. Cumberland's cultural diversity is something to be proud of and occasions such as Ramadan provide us a great opportunity to celebrate it.
Ramadan is a time for reflection, forgiveness and renewing faith. It is a time that families and neighbours come together to share the Iftar meal each day and a chance to connect with the community.
As a Council we are determined for Cumberland to be a place where everyone can belong. This is why we have commissioned banners welcoming Ramadan, as we will for other major religious and cultural festivals.
You may see these banners hanging around your community, just as you may have seen banners for Reconciliation Week, Easter and Diwali.
These banners are just one way we can use Ramadan to share community experiences and learn more about the cult
ural traditions of many people who call Cumberland home.

Youth team, flower fest' win big at Local Government Awards
A ground breaking initiative that flipped the script by putting young people in charge of Council's youth strategy and NSW's largest flower festival are the two big winners for Cumberland Council at the Local Government Excellence Awards held on 7 June 2018.
Council's Youth Participation and Programs Team won the award for 'Innovative Leadership and Management' while the Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival won the award for 'Local Economic Contribution'.
Council had five finalists at the 2018 Local Government Excellence Awards, including its Mobile Community Recycling Service, Fight the Dust Asbestos Awareness Campaign and Auburn Park upgrade.

Cumberland Community Grants Program
Cumberland Council has invested almost $600,000 in the community, as part of the 2017-18 Cumberland Community Grants Program.
The program provides grants to local individuals and not for profit organisations for projects that deliver a social, economic, cultural, recreational or environmental benefit to the Cumberland community.

Remembering
Narelle Morris
A plaque unveiling was held at Volunteer Park in Merrylands on Friday 1 June, in honour of Cumberland resident and dedicated volunteer Narelle Morris, who passed away on Christmas Day 2017.
Mayor Greg Cummings said Narelle was a passionate and loyal person who dedicated much of her life to helping her Cumberland community.
"Narelle was a remarkable woman and a well liked member of our community. She joined Holroyd Community Aid as a volunteer in 2004 and very quickly took on a leadership role amongst the volunteers. Narelle was instrumental in improving the organisation's volunteer numbers and positive community outcomes," Mayor Cummings said.
"Narelle was well known especially around Merrylands and developed relationships with residents, business owners, service providers, Council staff and elected Councillors.
"People always spoke highly of Narelle and her life experience which gave her a strong sense of community spirit. In 2012 Narelle was awarded Holroyd Citizen of the Year in recognition of her outstanding and long term volunteer work for the community and in 2016 was recognised as Granville's local woman of the year.
"Cumberland will always remember Narelle and I hope others will continue to use her as an inspiration to make a difference in the lives of everyone we meet."
