Yesterday, the Government Affairs Committee special guests, Mayor Paul "Mac" McNamara and Deputy Mayor Consuelo Martinez shared their immersion experience into local politics and their plans for connecting with the business community.

As newly elected officials, they are very interested in hearing from the constituents. Thus both of them will be holding community meetings as well as working with the chamber in order to develop a sound understanding of the needs and holistic direction of our city.

What the Council cannot do...

It was very interesting to hear "What you need to do..." responses from the attendees. In particular, filling vacancies on Grand Ave, as if it's as simple as stating a decree and seeing things magically occur.

We ALL want a vibrant community, including core sectors like Downtown, East Valley and South Escondido. But what does it take to fill vacant store fronts? To name a few:
  • A building owner who is interested in selling or leasing the property.
  • A viable business that can sustain market fluctuations.
  • An investor willing to take a risk.
  • A gentrified offering of goods and services.
  • A community that shops locally.
The city does not have authority over a business/building owner outside of enforcing municipal code. They also cannot dictate what a property owner must do or who they must sell or lease to. There has been public discussion regarding incentivizing or penalizing property owners, thus making it more desirable for them to engage in actively pursuing a tenant, however, this strategy poses legality questions.

One thing is certain; there is a lot of changes occurring in Escondido with numerous infill projects. If you would like to be in the know, then join us for the next Economic Development Committee meeting on Thursday, January 9 at noon. See below for more information and to RSVP.
