Historical Tidbit:
Whitman's Volunteers in the Civil War
|
5th Regiment Charging Up a hill in Washington D.C.
Abraham Lincoln made the call to arms on April 12, 1861. Captain Allen was the first to have received word in Whitman. Immediately, runners where dispatched to inform the other members of the militia.
Once the members of the militia had received the call they headed to the armory. Some of the members of the militia did not receive the message right away, and continued their day as usual. George A Edison was one of those people. Instead of making his way to the armory, he went directly to work at the Hobart Mill. He was later informed about President Lincoln's message when he was at lunch. He then immediately left for the armory.
From the armory, Captain Allen marched them to the State House in Boston via train, and signed them up for the war effort, securing their spot as the first regiment to enlist.
The 5th regiment was then ordered to camp out at Faneuil Hall. The 5th regiment then proceeded to Monroe, Virginia to defend Washington D.C. They took a train to Fall River then booked a steamer called "State of Maine" from there.
