Celebrate Fall at a Festival in Lake County
One of the best things about saying farewell to summer is looking forward to a fall festival in Lake County. Rockland Fire Protection District Undergoes
Changes in Fire and Ambulance Service

As of October 1, 2018, the Lake Forest and Libertyville fire departments will be providing fire and EMS to the entire Rockland Fire Protection District. If your business or residence is north of the EJ&E railroad tracks, you are served by Libertyville. The phone number to report is 847-362-2121. If your business or residence is south of the EJ&E railroad tracks, you are served by Lake Forest. The
phone number is 847-234-2121. 
You can register to vote at Shields Township until Oct 9, 2018 for the November 6th general election. A grace period to register will be available Oct 10-Oct 19 at the Lake County Clerk's office. Early voting begins on Oct 22-Nov 3 at the following locations in Shields Township: Lake Forest City Hall, 220 E Deerpath Road and North Chicago City Hall, 1850 Lewis Ave. The hours for early voting are Monday -Friday 9-5 Sat 9-2 and in North Chicago 10-4. Call the Lake County Clerk's office at 847-377-2410 for more information. 
Referendums to go to vote in November

Refuse

A Refuse referendum for the unincorporated area of Shields Township will be on the ballot. If approved, the referendum will allow Shields Township to contract for refuse services for the unincorporated areas.
The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) will assist the Township in negotiation of the contract ( https://www.swalco.org/ ) with multiple vendors. The contract will require the refuse collection service to directly bill the resident. There will be no changes to the tax levy for the unincorporated area.
The benefit of contracted services for the unincorporated areas is lower prices with additional services, such as recycling for all residents. Townships recently contracting services include Warren, Lake Villa and Ela. Fremont and Avon Townships will also go to referendum for refuse services. For more information


Illinois General Assembly

S hall the Illinois General Assembly amend the State Constitution to ban the creation of a new statewide property tax.
An Epidemic Hits Home: The Drug Epidemic in Lake County

 According to a 2017 estimate from the Centers for Disease Control, 196 Americans die from drug overdose every day. Learn about the current state of the drug overdose epidemic nationally, statewide, and in Lake County. Attend this discussion titled, "An Epidemic Hits Home" Oct. 2 at the College of Lake County, A-Wing lower level auditorium in Grayslake.

Resource tables will open at 6 p.m. The panel, which will include County Board Interim Chair Carol Calabresa, State's Attorney Michael Nerheim and members from the health department, will begin discussion at 7 p.m.
Emergency Alert Tests to Your Phone, TV Scheduled Oct. 3

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission, will issue a test of the Nationwide Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) which will be sent to all compatible cell phones on Oct. 3. The test was originally scheduled Sept. 20. Please note some older cell phones may not receive the test message. 

This test will be followed by a test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS), which is made available to radio and television broadcasters, cable systems, satellite radio and television providers, and wire line video providers. The EAS test is scheduled to last about one minute and will be similar to regular monthly EAS test messages.  Learn more
Recycle Your Shoes at New County Locations

As you discover a growing pile of shoes that no longer fit, don’t throw them away! Keep them out of the landfills and recycle it all instead. As part of the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County's Reuse-A-Shoe program, new locations have opened to bring your new and gently used shoes including drop-off bins in Deerfield, Gages Lake, Port Barrington and Vernon Hills. Need Help Paying Your Utility Bills

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps senior citizens, lower-income families, the disabled, and individuals on fixed incomes to pay their natural gas and electric utility bills.
You may apply at the Township Office. Financial eligibility guidelines must be met. The 9 month program runs from October 1 through May 31st or until funding is exhausted.

  • October 1st is reserved for seniors who are 60 years of age or older and for disabled individuals who have been certified disabled through Social Security, VA, or Workmen Compensation/Temporary Disability.
  • Individuals claiming disability must provide recent documentation to verify that they are receiving disability. Individuals cannot be on pending status or waiting for the outcome from an appeal.
  • November 1st is reserved for families that are disconnected, disconnected or who have children under 6 years of age.
  • Parents with children under 6 years of age or younger must provide verification of the child’s age. A parent can bring in a copy of the birth certificate or their recent public aide medical card.
  • December 1st is for the general population that is eligible for the program. 
Required Documents
  • All individuals applying for LIHEAP/PIPP are required to have certain documentation at the time their application is being taken.
  • Social security cards for all individuals living in the home including children
  • Verification of income for the last 30 days for all adults 18 years of age or older living in the home. (Check stubs, award letters, bank statements) Current letters from the Social Security office.
  • Gas and electric bills. Verification of fuel oil/propane
  • Lease or rent receipt
  • Medical card from public aid
  • Permission letter from the primary person on the bill if a proxy 2nd party is going to apply on their behalf. The proxy will need to bring and ID with them.
     
Dial-a-Ride
Y ou can register at the Shields Township office for this curb-to-curb service that takes the elderly or disabled where they need to go. Once you are registered and have made a reservation, you will need $3 for a one way trip and $6 for a round trip.
Property Tax Relief
Illinois law provides homeowners with homestead exemptions that may lower the amount of property tax you owe. Our office can assist you with filing your exemptions. Call us at 847-234-3485  for more information .
