Academics

AVID

This week AVID 9 and 11 students got a "Bite of Reality."  In this real life simulation, participants received an "About Me" profile. The profile included an occupation and salary, student loan debt owed, credit card debt owed, and cost of medical insurance. Some participants had a spouse, some were single, and some were single parents.  Participants built a monthly budget based on their incomes. They visited nine merchants to purchase housing, transportation, food, day care, and other needs, as well as a credit union for financial services. The Fickle Finger of Fate randomly visited each participant during the simulation and distributed unexpected windfalls and unplanned expenses.  Participants were asked to balance both their checkbooks and their budgets. Thank you, Kinecta Federal Credit for donating this valuable lesson to our students!

We had nine PVHS Surf team members nominated for awards! Junior Rodney Buck took home first place in the surf series, Junior Longboarder! In addition, Rodney also was awarded SBSSA's overall "Waterman of the Year" for the high school league. These are tremendous honors for Rodney who led our team consistently all year long. Surf team seniors Will Allen and Hayden Gunson both were awarded college scholarships from SBBC and Subaru Pacific announced that they are generously matching the funding in the scholarships. Will and Hayden are two of four South Bay high school senior surfers who received this first ever scholarship award from SBBC.
