PRESIDENT'S CORNER
It has been a privilege to serve as President of the Friends of the Atascadero Library Board of Directors for the past 4 years. It is now time for a changing of the guard, and hopefully you -- our members -- will turn out on
Saturday, June 29th
for our Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Election of Officers for the coming year. More information on the AGM program, which will highlight local author - Eldonna Edwards, can be found in the newsletter. Don't miss this important event. This will also mark our 5
th anniversary of Opening the Doors to the new Library!
I will be staying on the Board, with my focus shifting to help Alice Rew and Sharon Turner with the Bookstore. We have recently attracted some new volunteers, which we hope will help to keep the bookstore open everyday between 10am and 5pm. Drop in and say "hi!" to our bookstore volunteers when you next visit the Library - there's probably a book on the shelf that will pique your interest!
Library staff members are ramping up for the Summer Reading Program - all ages can participate, and I'm pretty sure prizes are involved. Look for more information about the 100

Birthday Celebration of the SLO County Library. And did you know that our Library provides Passport Services? Staff is always available to help you with new or renewals.
I'm currently writing this article and watching the rain and wind outside my window. It's amazing that it's the end of May and we're still getting rain...hopefully the bright, sunny and hot days of summer are just around the corner and that you enjoy every moment!

LIBRARY ART NEWS
Summer in Pastels: The Pastel Artists of the Central Coast

Beginning June 3rd, and continuing through August 30th, the Atascadero Library will exhibit the art of Carolyn Braun, Susan Clark, Linda Smith, Shelley Snow, Ginger Toomer, and Priscilla White. These artists, members of the Pastel Artists of the Central Coast, create their paintings using a powdered pigment that is rolled into sticks.
Everyone is invited to meet these artists and enjoy their work at a library reception at 5 p.m.
on Thursday, June 6th. Light refreshments will be served.

Eldonna Edwards is a writing instructor, keynote speaker, former creative journaling facilitator, author of three books & an award-winning documentary (see flyer below for more information).
The voice in her best-selling debut novel This I Know comes straight from the heart. This I Know, won the hearts and minds of readers everywhere and was a Delilah Book Club selection. In her second novel, Clover Blue (June 2019) Eldonna once again explores themes of otherness and belonging, and the true definition of home.
Ms. Edwards is also the subject of the award-winning documentary Perfect Strangers that follows one kidney patient and one potential kidney donor in their search for a possible match. Her memoir Lost In Transplantation also chronicles this life-changing decision.
Each person that attends will receive a ticket to enter a drawing to win an autographed copy of one of her books. FOAL members that attend will receive two tickets!

or you can obtain a membership form from the library, at Alice's Bookstore or the circulation desk. Completed forms may be left at the Bookstore or the circulation desk. Membership categories are:
- Individual $12
- Family $25
- Benefactor $100
Life members do not need to renew their membership on an annual basis.
Each renewing (and new!) member will receive a raffle ticket for an opportunity to win a book by local author, Eldonna Edwards, who will be the featured speaker at the FOAL annual meeting on June 29.

2019 "ATASCADERO'S DANCING WITH OUR STARS"
A GRAND SUCCESS!

Community Star Tom Butler (Atascadero Greyhound Foundation) and choreographer Kara Frenzel won Saturday's People's Choice and raised the most overall funds at $49,000 for LIGHTHOUSE Drug Education Program.

Thanks to all who collaborated in making our 10th annual Atascadero's Dancing with Our Stars, "Atascadero Time Machine: Back to the 80's!" an enormous success.
Artistic Director Molly Comin knocked it out of the park!
The three-night event raised over $211,000 (prior to expenses) with $173,000 benefitting Atascadero Library, Atascadero Greyhound Foundation, Atascadero Kiwanis, Atascadero Printery Foundation, El Camino Homeless Organization, Atascadero AAUW and Paso Robles Youth Arts Foundation.
Last June the non-profits were invited to raise funds for their own causes from the highly successful FOAL/DWOS fundraising platform. It was a wonderful effort making a positive difference in our community.

ALICE'S BOOKSTORE NEWS

Hello and Happy Spring!
We are enjoying a very busy spring, leading into summer here in the Bookstore. It is hard to believe that within a few days our schools will be out for the summer. How the time flies!
We have just cleaned up from our latest '3rd Tuesday Pop-up' sale and we had nothing but happy customers. As a reminder, from 3-5:30pm on Pop-Up Tuesdays, everything is just a quarter! Kathy DeCou is always the trooper who helps and between the two of us we liberated nearly 400 books this month! Also, we continue to have the Book Bag special of 10 items of your choice plus the cool canvas bag for just $10.
This March and April we welcomed 3 new volunteers in the bookstore. Thanks to Cherie, Geraldine and Laurie for the many smiles brought and shifts worked in our store. We are always happy to welcome new folks and by the time you read this we will have brought another volunteer on board! Welcome John! We are still looking for volunteers! Other than sales in the store we could use help sorting books and making donations to local non-profits of our excess riches. Please feel free to pick up a Volunteer Interest form from either a store volunteer or anyone at the Reference Desk in the Library. This will garner you a personal call from Sharon to answer any questions you have and get you started on a really great adventure the bookstore.
The Bookstore has recently updated its policy for accepting book donations.

SAY HELLO TO JEANNE AND CARL ROBBINS

Carl and Jeanne met in 1988 in Atascadero - Carl a long-time resident of the city and Jeanne having moved to the city in 1985. Their first meeting came when Carl was taking a group of students to Europe. The group included Jeanne's son, Kevin and Carl's son Todd - both 16 years old. Carl taught at Atascadero High School for 31 years, and Jeanne taught at Monterey Road Elementary for 19 years.
Between them they have 4 sons and one daughter, with 5 granddaughters ages 10-24, and one great-grandson who just turned 1 year old! They love to travel to visit their kids and grandkids, and there is always a family reunion somewhere relaxing - the Dominican Republic is a favorite location. Read More.

Celebrate our 100th Anniversary by joining a reading program this Summer!
Library lovers of all ages can sign up and read books to earn prizes this summer.
Children and teens participate by reading for 5 days (20 minutes a day) or reading 5 books to earn a "Library 100th Anniversary" bag full of goodies. Take the challenge and read 5 more books to earn a free book to keep, provided by the Foundation for SLO Public Libraries.

Summer Adventures are Short & Sweet 
So is the summer reading program for adults! Challenge yourself to read something new, while celebrating the 100th anniversary of the library, too!
Adults who read ten 100-page books win a swag bag of goodies while supplies last. Enter your completed signup sheet by July 31st to any County of SLO library branch for a grand prize drawing. Grand prizes include a bi-plane ride with Banner Airways in Pismo Beach, a zip line tour with Margarita Adventures in Santa Margarita, or a Staycation gift basket with local entertainment options. Winners of a grand prize will be notified in early August.
Adult Summer Reading is about coming together to create, explore, learn, and celebrate our SLO community at the library. Short & Sweet summer reading and all library events are free and open to the public. For more information ask a Librarian.
