June 2020
Dear Colleagues,

Despite extraordinary challenges we face in our nation with the COVID-19 pandemic and the disproportionate impact it has had on communities of color, as well as recent events that have raised our awareness of racism, discrimination, and structural inequality, I am optimistic about the future. I am proud to be a part of an institution that is at the forefront of addressing the pandemic and is committed to systemic change to eliminate health inequities and create an environment that supports and honors diversity and inclusion.
At our Interprofessional Curriculum Kickoff event this year (video), we were honored to host Howard Pinderhughes, PhD, from the UCSF School of Nursing, whose keynote address “The Importance of Interprofessional Practice and Teamwork for the Healing, Health and Wellbeing of the Most Vulnerable” highlighted the value of interprofessional teams in addressing health inequity. We are committed to incorporating additional content on health equity and anti-racism into our core interprofessional curriculum moving forward as we feel this content is critical for all health professionals in training.

We continue to look for ways to increase interprofessional learning opportunities in patient care settings and believe that the recent expansion of telehealth at UCSF has the potential to overcome barriers to interprofessional collaboration, including space and geographical limitations. We welcome your ideas and proposals for interprofessional clinical experiences for UCSF learners in our Interprofessional Clinical Opportunities Grant Program. Grant proposals are due today, October 30.

We hope that you will join us at our virtual PIPE Open House on November 4 from 1 – 2:30 p.m. on Zoom for an opportunity to:
  • Hear about the accomplishments and work for the upcoming year for PIPE committees
  • Learn about some innovative interprofessional educational experiences in clinical settings
  • Brainstorm ways to integrate interprofessional learners into telehealth and incorporate content on health equity and anti-racism into the IPE curriculum

Please RSVP to Louise Hendrickson if you plan to attend.

Warmly,
Maria Wamsley
