How Young Professional Fundraisers Are Improving Lives in Dallas

Learn from under-40 nonprofit founders/fundraisers who are up-and-coming leaders working to improve the future of Dallas, and who inspire their peers to make a difference. Hear how their passion guided them in starting their nonprofits and what they have learned along this entrepreneurial journey. A Q&A will follow. The takeaway will be networking, collaboration and inspiration.
Robert Taylor
is an asset manager at Thackeray Partners, a real estate private equity firm based in Dallas, Texas. Robert is also the founder and executive director of The Educator Collective, a professional community made up of teachers from across Dallas-Fort Worth. TEC memberships are offered free of charge and provide educators with opportunities to grow in three areas of focus: community, development, and leadership. He also serves on the boards of directors for the Trinity Christian Academy Alumni Association and the West Dallas Community School Young Professionals, and was a 2015 Leadership ISD fellow. Robert graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2012 and received degrees in finance and Plan II honors.
Stephanie Giddens is president and founder of Vickery Trading Company,
a children's clothing company that empowers refugee women by offering employment training, cultural assimilation classes and transitional income. The clothes are handmade in Dallas, Texas by refugees from across the globe, and the company's non-profit structure allows it to return funds to programs benefitting refugees. Stephanie was previously a private equity coordinator with BankCap Partners, co-founder and chair of Polish Ministries, and a health services specialist with Head Start. She graduated from Texas A&M University and then earned a master of theology degree from the Dallas Theological Seminary.
Maria Eichhold is co-founder and executive director of In My Shoes, a Dallas-based non-profit that provides a safe, welcoming community for pregnant women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. A native Ohioan who grew up in a suburb of Indianapolis, Indiana, she played basketball at The College of Mount St. Joseph (Cincinnati) where she earned her bachelor's degree in social work. She then went on to complete a master's in social work from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis in 2009. Also in 2009, Maria began to work for a house of hospitality for pregnant women in need of support called Maggie's Place in Phoenix, AZ, where she lived with pregnant and homeless women for two years. This is where Maria started to truly understand the importance of authentic relationships to help women heal from past trauma and unhealthy relationships.

Spring is in the air, and many of us have an extra spring in our step after last month's AFP International Conference in New Orleans. Been putting off joining AFP? Now through June 30th, AFP International is
Margaret McDermott, who bestowed millions upon institutions linked to the arts, education and science, died Thursday. She was 106. She began her post-collegiate years as a journalist, for the Dallas Times Herald and later The Dallas Morning News. She married Eugene McDermott, co-founder of Geophysical Service Inc., which became Texas Instruments. Together they donated millions of dollars to North Texas institutions. The Eugene McDermott Foundation was honored by the Greater Dallas Chapter AFP in 1989 as Outstanding Foundation, and Texas Instruments was named Outstanding Corporation in 1995.
Barbara James, CFRE, has died. She was a trailblazer in the fundraising profession as the first African-American member of the Greater Dallas Chapter AFP in 1984, and was a leader active in both our chapter and the national organization. She was honored as the 1990 Outstanding Fundraising Executive by the Greater Dallas Chapter AFP. The Barbara James Scholarship was created to honor her and the Greater Dallas Chapter AFP's national designation as a Friend of Diversity.
