Looking West: We're Off to Steamboat!
We have a large number of artists and guests attending
Looking West, this year's exhibition at the
Steamboat Art Museum in beautiful downtown Steamboat Springs, CO. There are a number of activities planned which we invite you to be a part of. The
Awards Ceremony will take place Friday, June 28, 3:30 - 4:30 at the Chief Theater. The
Artist's Reception will follow from 4:30 - 5:30 pm, at the museum, for the artists, their guests, and museum patrons. From 6 - 8 pm the reception will be opened to
the public. If you are coming to Steamboat, be

Our Beautiful Catalog
AWA has a wonderful catalog for the Steamboat Exhibition and we hope to continue the tradition for each of our upcoming museum shows. Each artist has a full page with an image of her museum piece, a short essay about it, and her bio. This is a great book for collectors, galleries, and family members!
Each artist in the show will receive five catalogs at the Meet & Greet on Wednesday, June 26, 5 - 7 pm. If you are not attending the show your catalogs will be mailed to you. Catalogs are available for sale through the Steamboat Art Museum gift store ($5 off for AWA members). Contact store manager

This Year's Guest Artist
This year's Guest Artist at the Steamboat exhibition is Carol Carter.
Carol creates contemporary, large-scale watercolors and is considered to be one of the most important contemporary artists working in the medium today. Kathrine Lemke Waste, AWA Master/Heritage Member, says of her work, "She has complete control over what seems uncontrollable. Her blooms and backruns, which are usually unwelcome accidents for most watercolorists, become integral elements of her compositions. Carter's technical mastery, evocative subject matter and transparent color harmonies make her entire body of art some of the most painterly works in watercolor."
Carol received her MFA from Washington University, St. Louis. She received a MAA-NEA Fellowship in Painting and Works on Paper in 1994. Her many accomplishments include being voted Best St. Louis Artist by The Riverfront Times, her work was featured on the cover of New American Painting Magazine, and a solo exhibition of her work was sponsored by the US Embassy at the Teatro del Centro de Arte, in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Ms. Carter has been a visiting artist in Oslo and Stavanger, Norway, in 1999, 2001, and 2003. The Schmidt Art Center in Belleville, IL, held a solo exhibition of her work, and a retrospective of her work was displayed at the Turner Center for the Arts in Valdosta, GA. She was invited to be in the National Watercolor Biennial at Parkland College in February, and in March she was the featured artist in the Herstory Invitational at SWIC in Granite City, IL. Different Strokes, by Quartro Publishing, in London, England, is featuring Carol's work this year.
Ms. Carter's work is represented in many public and private art collections, including those of Citicorp, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Arjomani Paper, Leonard Slatkin, Price University, and Utah State University.

Free Afternoon Art Demo
We are so fortunate to have the renown watercolorist Carol Carter joining us at our Steamboat exhibition as a guest artist (see bio above) and symposium speaker. Carol will also be giving a free watercolor demonstration from 3 - 4:30 pm, Thursday, June 27, at the Chief Theater (813 Lincoln Ave, Steamboat Springs, CO). If you are coming to the Steamboat events, please be sure to attend. Friends and family are welcome!

Three prestigious members of the arts community will be our awards jurors for
Looking West at the Steamboat Art Museum.
John Fawcett needs no introduction. This well-regarded artist and painting instructor lives in the Steamboat Springs area, and we are fortunate to have him as a member of our awards panel.
Jennifer R. Henneman, PhD, is the Associate Curator of the Petrie Institute of Western American Art at the Denver Art Museum and Christine Bullard is an art collector and show juror from Denver. Each of these jurors represents a different aspect of the art world, and our thanks go out to all three for their time and efforts during the awards jurying process.

Newest Board Member!
Welcome to Janet Matson Lee, AWA's newest Board member. Janet will be attending our events at the Steamboat Museum show, so be sure to introduce yourself and help her feel part of our organization.
Janet recently launched Matson Lee Consulting, a consulting business focusing on fundraising strategies for non-profit entities. She has significant experience and expertise in donor communications and publications, proposal and report writing, goal setting and campaign structuring, donor strategy development and relationship building, and non-profit management.
Janet served as the Director of Philanthropy at The Nature Conservancy in Michigan for fourteen years, leading a fundraising team with a focus on major gifts. Her previous experience includes corporate relations at Northwestern University, pharmaceutical sales and management, non-profit program management and ownership of an interior design business. Janet currently serves on the board of Midnight Golf in Detroit, an organization that provides guidance and opportunity to Detroit students in applying to and gaining entry into college, then mentorship through their college experience.
A native of MI, Janet is an outdoor enthusiast, a patron and devotee of art, theater, music and design. She and her husband split their time between Brighton and Harbor Springs, Michigan. They have three daughters and a very handsome yellow lab.

Tour San Antonio With Us!
A few days prior to the reception at AWA's RS Hanna Gallery exhibition in Fredericksburg, TX, we will be hosting a fun and unique custom tour of San Antonio from October 30 - November 1, 2019. We will be guided by food historian Julia Celeste, owner of Food Chick Tours. The focus of this tour will be the food, history, and culture of San Antonio. This is open to all AWA artists, patrons, and their guests. The tour has limited space; contact us ASAP to reserve your spot!

Alt Tagging in Instagram
Just when we got comfortable posting on Instagram, a new feature has popped up that everyone needs to pay attention to because it will effect your SEO (search engine optimization).
Instagram is
introducing the ability to add alt text to photos in an effort to make the platform more accessible.
Users can add their own custom alt text that can be read by screen readers to assist those with visual impairments.
Alternatively, users can let Instagram add alt text automatically, which will use object recognition technology to generate a description of the photo.
Alt text can be added to photos during the publishing process by following the steps below:
- Start by taking a photo or uploading an existing photo to Instagram.
- Choose a filter and edit the image, then tap Next.
- Tap Advanced Settings at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Alt Text.
- Write your alt text in the box and tap Done.
Alt text can also be added to existing photos by following these steps:
- Go to the photo and tap the three-dot menu icon.
- Tap Add Alt Text in the bottom right.
- Write the alt text in the box and tap Done.
