Study: Teen Drivers with ADHD - More Tickets, More Accidents

Teen drivers diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are significantly more likely to crash, be issued traffic and moving violations, and engage in risky driving behaviors than their peers without ADHD, according to a Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) study published today in the journal Pediatrics.

Long-Term Physical-Psychiatric Effects of Childhood Trauma

Exposure to trauma in childhood is associated with both psychiatric and physical problems for decades afterward, according to new research presented here today at the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Annual Meeting. Researchers are longitudinally assessing more than 1,000 individuals who were directly exposed to the 9/11 terror attack as children, as well as a matched control group of 500 individuals who were not.

Study Suggests Kids Should Be Screened Earlier For Autism
|

New research indicates that autism can be reliably diagnosed in children months before pediatricians conduct routine screening for the developmental disorder.
A study looking at over 1,200 kids finds that an autism diagnosis made by a trained professional is accurate starting shortly after a child's first birthday.

Learning Language: New Insights into How Brain Functions

The work adds to growing evidence that human beings distinguish between right and wrong at a very young age and are willing to pay a personal cost to encourage positive behavior in others.

Book Review: Difference or Disorder

This book has the phonemic systems, language patterns and cultural information all in one place for several languages we commonly encounter which will save me hours of research. An injury to a child can be an emotionally devastating event for families. Whether it is caused by a car crash, fall, sports injury or biking collision, many parents feel that have failed to protect their child from harm.
"Traumatic brain injury in childhood is the most prevalent cause of death and long term disability in children and affects all socioeconomic levels" (Bond Chapman, 2006).

"People have a need to touch animals in order to connect with them," observes Dr. Temple Grandin, who was diagnosed with autism as a child but went on to earn a PhD in animal science from the University of Illinois and accept an associate professorship at Colorado State University. She has authored five books, including Animals in Translation, published in 2005, that explore and explain what life with autism can teach us about communicating with other species through resources other than language.
