REMEMBERING
Pastor Ed Treat
Memorial Day is a day to remember the ultimate sacrifice of those who gave their life for our benefit. How can we ever be grateful enough for what we’ve been given? We need to remember often and give thanks.

While Memorial Day is an opportunity for a break from work and a chance to barbecue, we must always remember the ultimate price some have paid on our behalf. Lives were given to preserve the historically unprecedented civil and religious freedoms we enjoy, and sometimes take for granted.

It is crucial that we remember the nightmares of why some had to die for us in the first place. The future of the United States depends on how well we collectively remember and protect what freedom really is, and on how well we resist that terrible threat of tyranny, lurking for any chance to return. We cannot afford to forget. In the words of George Santayana, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Christians are “memorial people” because the whole of our faith depends upon remembering. Those who persevere a future of goodness and grace are those who remember the gracious past given by God. The future of the church globally and locally depends largely on how well we remember the gospel of Jesus Christ and continue to proclaim it faithfully.

On this special day, let us remember the past evils that could visit us again lest we forget. Let us do so with deep gratitude for the extraordinary grace and freedom given to us when men and women laid their lives down for America—but especially for that one life laid down to save our souls for all eternity.
Road Trips Before
Cell Phones
Did Pastor Arthur's sermon on road trips and “getting away from it all” bring back some fond memories? With me, it brought back all the times we've driven west, usually with our “rock hound” friends from Fergus Falls. They'd pull a trailer behind their pick-up and our bed for the night was the table, which made up into a bed.

Before cell phones were on the scene, it was easy to get separated while driving. We'd be blissfully enjoying the scenery, usually after reaching Wall Drug and slurping a nice cold drink (well advertised for miles) and maybe an ice cream cone, while looking over the sometimes weird souvenirs inside. Get back in our vehicles, feeling refreshed again, and with not enough discussion about road work ahead with a detour possible, we'd think, “Are they ahead of us or behind us now?” Such a sinking feeling...with no way to communicate, how would we ever know if our bed for the night was ahead of us or behind us?

You'd think we'd have learned our lesson, but the same sinking feeling happened coming from Door County once, and the worst one when we were headed for the World's Fair. We got to Vancouver first, but our friends were back on the road somewhere...Where would that be? Turned out they had car trouble and we didn't meet up until the next day.
What to do? They had all our things: medications, toothbrushes, bedding, you name it. We asked at the designated campground and a nice man said we could use an empty pick-up camper for the night. Went out and bought one pillow, one toothbrush, a bar of soap, and one blanket....Crawled into that camper through the window, and spent a very long night worrying. We did get the giggles a bit...we'd used the same toothbrush for the first time ever, could not get comfortable on the “who knows who had slept there” bed, and the fact that I still remember all this tells a lot.

We're hoping to take another trip this summer...by ourselves. A motel is booked, we'll know the sheets are fresh, we can use our own toothbrushes, there'll be TV with not much on as usual. Sounds like a plan...so far. One never knows.
Purse-onality Purforms to Purfection
TLC's Women's Retreat a Success
-By Marilyn Erickson
A group of TLC women, friends and neighbors gathered on a rainy Saturday morning this past May 18 for a retreat under the theme REFLECTIONS . The morning started with coffee and goodies, devotions led by Erin Pommeranz, conversation, and getting to know each other better.

As the day progressed, one of the highlights was the message given by Jean Abbott, who has been on CBS News, the Today show, Fox News and in Good Housekeeping. Jean shared her story of being misdiagnosed with a debilitating disorder she never had and her journey to a new life, as she detailed in her book “Misdiagnosed: A Thirty Year Struggle with a Debilitating Disorder I Never Had.” Jean shared a powerful and uplifting story of faith and perseverance. Her book will soon be in the TLC library.

Another highlight was the delicious salad luncheon prepared by Margaret Mattson and Renee Jefferson, allowing more time for conversation. Following that time together, we had a fun presentation by Bonnie Kastelein on our “purse-onality.” We were asked if we were a “one purse” person or one who had a purse for every outfit?

Following Bonnie's presentation, our outreach project for the day was filling purses with new hygiene products for women. The idea came from something Eloise Williamson had read in Guideposts. As you can see in the pictures, there was an outpouring of both purses and hygiene products provided by women at the retreat and other women in the congregation. These will be delivered to Oasis for Youth and Harriet Tubman.

Oasis for Youth is a Bloomington-based drop-in center providing many services to youth. It is located at Oak Grove Presbyterian Church.

The mission of Harriet Tubman is: To advance opportunities for change so that every person can experience safety, hope, and healing.

Tubman helps women, men, youth and families who have experienced relationship violence, elder abuse, addiction, sexual exploitation or other forms of trauma. Throughout the Twin Cities, Tubman provides safe shelter, legal services, mental and chemical health counseling, elder abuse resources, youth programming and community education, including public information campaigns to provide community members the information and support they need to get help or give help.
Special guest, Jean Abbott, spoke about her journey with a misdiagnosed disorder.
Jean spent some one-on-one time with
several of the women attending the event.
Fresh fruits and a variety of salads
appeased all appetites.
Previously owned purses were filled
with donations of new personal hygiene
products for women in need.

BRING YOUR OWN BAGS
It's such a simple thing to do, and so beneficial for the environment––bringing your own bags to stores not only helps cut down on the number of bags needed, and by extension the resources needed to create them, it also means that fewer bags get thrown away into our already-overfull landfills. And yet, it's really easy to walk out the door without them. A solution? Put your reusable bags right near something that you always grab when you go out the door, like your keys or your shoes. Better yet, keep some in your car. You never know when you might need one, and going reusable really does make a difference.
