Curator Talk: Salt Production on the Erie Canal

Have you ever wondered why Syracuse is called the "Salt City?" Learn all about Syracuse's thriving salt industry at the next Erie Canal Museum Curator Talk. Curator Ashley Maready will discuss the history of salt and the importance of salt production in Central New York, as well as the important role salt played in the development of the Erie Canal. The program is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am in the second-floor gallery of the museum.
Free parking is available in the lot across from the museum under Interstate 81 and Interstate 690.

Juneteenth is a nationwide celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation, which let slaves know they were finally free. Each year, the Juneteenth Festival is held to acknowledge and educate the community about the importance of Juneteenth, as well as the role that people in our community have played, and continue to have in achieving and maintaining freedom, equality, and opportunity.
The entire community is invited to join in the free celebration featuring live entertainment, an educational area, culturally diverse food court, exhibits and more!
The following streets are closed and will re-open by Sunday afternoon:
West Water Street, from Clinton Street to Salina Street.
West Water Street, from Clinton Street to Franklin Street, will become two-way.
Erie Boulevard West, from Clinton Street to Franklin Street.

During the Juneteenth Festival Parade, which runs from the Dunbar Center to Clinton Square on Saturday from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm, delays may occur on South State and South Salina Streets.

Summer Drummers Jam, a group of students in grades 7-12 will play outdoors at Wildflowers Armory Square (

Creekwalk for one end-of-the-day jam. Organizers recommend starting from Wildflowers Armory Square at 6:00 pm, and strolling along the Creekwalk until 8:00 pm.

Welcome to Downtown Syracuse: Sugar Mangnolia Bistro Opens on Clinton Street
Southern-inspired menu features lunch, dinner and brunch offerings
The Sugar Magnolia Bistro (
map) is Armory Square's newest restaurant. The southern-inspired menu features lunch (which includes one side) for $7, and dinner (consisting of a starter, entrée and dessert) for $25. Dishes include a Muffuletta with a homemade olive spread, Po'Boys (there is a vegan option as well!), shrimp & grits, vegan red beans and rice, sweet heat friend chicken and more. The restaurant is open Wednesday to Friday for lunch (11:30 am to 2:30 pm), and serves dinner starting at 5:00 pm Wednesday to Saturday. There's also a Sunday brunch offering from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Lemonade, sweet and unsweetened tea and various flavors of sparkling water are available as beverages currently, as the bistro awaits its liquor license. Live jazz music and spoken-word events are planned this fall.

VIP Reveals Plans for the Former Post Standard Building
Construction expected to start later this year
VIP Structures revealed renderings showcasing its plans to add apartments and office space to the former Post Standard Building, overlooking Clinton Square. Three floors will be added to the building, as well as a new façade. The fourth and fifth floors will feature a total of 50 apartments, including 16 luxury units that will have balconies looking out over Clinton Square. Ten units will be classified as "affordable" housing, expected to lease for around $880 a month. There will be two rooftop gardens - one for residents, and one for office tenants. VIP will move its office here from One Webster Landing and occupy the first floor, leasing the second and third floor out to other office tenants. Construction is expected to start later this year, with a goal for occupancy starting in October, 2019.

Fourth Round of Art in the Windows Activates Downtown Streetscape

The newest round of artwork in the Downtown Committee Art in the Windows program is on display in Downtown Syracuse! This summer, the ground-floor windows of three buildings hold starring roles: The Syracuse Building, located at 224 Harrison Street (
map), The M&T Bank Building, located at 101 South Salina Street (
map), and the Syracuse Trust Building, located at 325 South Salina Street (
map).
At the Syracuse Building, passersby will find a series of screenprints from the ArtRage gallery. Each piece expresses the fundamental principles and core concepts that guide the work of the Poor People's Campaign, which Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. laid the vision for in 1967. 50+ years later, a
new Poor People's Campaign has emerged from over a decade's worth of work, in which Syracuse is an active participant. The Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival Portfolio reflects a collaboration with WAER Public Media's City Limits: A Poverty Project.
Earlier this week, Spectrum News profiled "Contract Cuse," photographs by duo Jordan Harmon and Chris Stein. The ground-floor windows of The M&T Bank Building showcase pictures of iconic Syracuse buildings and inspire the viewer to "look up" to stay positive.
Passersby will also notice striking photographs in the windows of The Lofts at Syracuse Trust, where artist Marie Heister's photographs compliment the building's character, while showcasing examples of the vibrancy (sunshine, flowers, nature and architecture) found throughout Syracuse.
The fourth round of Art in the Windows is funded by Tomorrow's Neighborhoods Today - Downtown, and will be on display through September. The program showcases available ground-floor storefronts as available retail opportunities. Art in the Windows strives to activate the streetscape, provide a new audience for local artists, and highlight the potential of vacant spaces.
