CSP Releases Mississippi Physician Workforce Report
Mississippi needs a 24% increase in physicians by the year 2030 to maintain care for its residents, according to a report issued this week by the Center for State Policy.

The 1-page report on Mississippi  includes data on the number of family physicians, the severity of physician shortage, the economic impact of family physicians, and the activities of an average family physician in each state.

Mississippi's data reveals that 91 percent of MAFP members participate in Medicare, and and 83% accept new Medicare patients. It also reports that 58 percent of residents live in an area with a health professional shortage. The CSP also released data on other states (AAFP member sign-in required).

Academy Ambassadors Named for Annual Meeting
Twelve Mississippi medical students will attend the MAFP Annual Meeting in July to assist with the meeting and to network with practicing physicians.

The  number represents an increase over 2017, when nine students attended. Three additional students will attend thanks to two grants awarded to the MAFP Foundation that will offset expenses of sending more students. UMMC's FMIG chapter is also sponsoring one of its members to be an Ambassador.

Sending students to the Annual Meeting serves as an investment in MAFP's future. Since 2010, 68% of those who have attended MAFP Annual Meeting as a student are still MAFP members today. And on Match Day, only 11% of the 40 past student attendees chose a specialty other than family medicine.

Ambassadors who are William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine students are: Terra Cody, M3; Adam Purvis, M3; and Anita Santpurkar, M3.

Ambassadors who are University of Mississippi Medical Center students are: Wisam Beauti, M2; Kaylie Bradshaw, M1; Will Casey, M4; Weston Eldridge, M2; Sonny Hodge, M3; Regan Maxwell, M4; Falan McKnight, M3; Conner Sears, M1; Hannah Whitlock, M1.

Please take the opportunity to get to know these students -- they may be your future partner.
Dr. Williams Earns Crawford Scholarship to Attend Annual Meeting
Dr. Williams
The MAFP Foundation has awarded the 2018 Crawford Scholarship to Dr. Susan Frichter Williams, a third-year resident at North Mississippi Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program.

"Professional development is of foremost importance," Dr. Williams said. " I plan to commit myself to attending the Annual Meeting each year as I believe in the vision and mission of the MAFP."

Dr. Williams is a graduate of the University of New Orleans and the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. She is a Mississippi Rural Physician Scholar and has served MAFP as an Academy Ambassador and as a Professional Development Committee member. During her time at UMMC, she served the Family Medicine Interest Group as president and vice president.

This is the second year the Crawford Scholarship has been awarded in memory of Dr. Dewitt G. Crawford. The intent of the gift is to provide scholarships for deserving residents to attend the MAFP Annual Scientific Assembly. Qualifications for the scholarship include being a resident who best demonstrated the character qualities of leadership gained through life experience in their job, education, and/or service or volunteer opportunities and shows a commitment to future involvement as a leader with the MAFP.

This scholarship is just one of several provided each year by the MAFP Foundation that promote family medicine as a specialty, and the continuing education of family physicians.
Dr. Mitchell Named to AAFP Reference Committee on Education
Dr. Mitchell
Dr. John Mitchell, director of the Office of Mississippi Physician Workforce, has been named by AAFP to an important committee for the Congress of Delegates this fall, which will be held in October at the FMX conference in New Orleans, LA.

Dr. Mitchell will serve as a liaison of the Reference Committee on Education. These committees consider all reports, recommendations of standing and special committees, hear all testimony, and make recommendations back to the Congress for final action.

Tobacco Use in the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Community
Most of us are aware of the fact that tobacco use is still one of the most preventable causes of disease and death. While the rate of tobacco use has declined nationwide over the last 20 years, one group has not seen the same positive changes -- there are sobering statistics for people with mental illness and substance abuse:
  • Nearly 1 in 5 adults have some form of mental illness.
  • More than 1 in 3 adults (36%) with mental illness smoke cigarettes, compared with 1 in 5 adults (21%) with no mental illness.
  • Tobacco users with mental health disorders die an average of 25 years earlier than American non-users.
  • Out of over 445,000 people who die prematurely due to complications of tobacco use, almost 200,000 are people with either mental health or substance abuse disorders.
