A Message from Debbie Wagner, CEO
|
It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the passing of one of our special BGCT family members, Samantha Cravens, on Thursday, April 24th from a car accident. Samantha was a passionate advocate for our BGCT mission having grown up at our Frank & Edith Morton Clubhouse and becoming our 2007 Citywide Youth of the Year. Samantha attended ASU and earned her degree in Non-Profit Leadership and Management in 2013 and went on to work serving our community at Our Family Services for over five years. During that time Sam also was recognized by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as a Tucson "40 under 40" recipient and married her long time sweetheart Corey last summer having both met working at BGCT. Samantha was loving, kind, genuine and was an inspiration and joy to all who knew her. It was a dream of Samantha's to come back to work at the organization that made such a substantial difference in her life and we were so thrilled to have her back at BGCT as our new Community Fund Development Coordinator.
We will never forget her beautiful spirit and are committed to continuing the work that Samantha and our staff, board, sponsors and community supporters do each day to provide our young people a clear path to reach their full potential and pursue their dreams. We will miss you and will keep your dreams and spirit of giving alive Samantha.

Frank & Edith Morton Clubhouse becomes an official Kind Campus with New Be Kind Mural Thanks to Partnership with Gadabout SalonSpas
The youth of Frank & Edith Morton Clubhouse were ecstatic this week as they watched the installation of the Ben's Bells Be Kind Mural outside of their Clubhouse. Now that the mural is up, Club members are excited to begin the Kind Campus program and learn just all the ways they can be kind at the Clubs and in the community.
Thanks to Gadabout SalonSpas and their commitment to making Tucson great and investing in our future leaders, their support of the Clubs made this possible. The Clubs are truly grateful and are excited to be a part of the "kindness" movement.
Ben's Bells and Kindness Education
Ben's Bells Kindness Education Programs are based on the belief that everyone has the capacity to be kind, and that kindness can be cultivated through intentional practice. Kindness is a universal topic with opportunities for education, recognition and celebration in a variety of venues, including schools, workplaces, neighborhoods and communities.

1st Annual Job Fair at Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson's Jim & Vicki Clubhouse
Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson's Jim & Vicki Clubhouse successfully spearheaded the first annual BGCT job fair with over 200 high school youth and Club members in attendance who were ready to learn, network, and get a job for the summer.. Special thanks to our community businesses who came out and provided job opportunities, interview skills and resume writing assistance for our kids. The community supporters included The Jim Click Automotive Team, Taco Bell, Walmart, Tucson Urban League, McDonald's, Home Depot, Tucson Police Department, Geico, YMCA, Tucson Fire Department, Southern Arizona Family Services, the Marines, and many retailer stores and call centers were represented as well.

Gary Lee Price's Ascent Bronze Sculpture Dedication at Pascua Yaqui Clubhouse
Thank you to Dr. William Neubauer, Mary and Rusty Garrett, Mark Irvin, Laurie Wetterschneider, Joe Moeller, Todd Bisbocci, Julie Butcher, Tom Roberson, Vance Falbaum, Pam Grissom, Bob Gugino, Kelly Olson, Jana Westerbeke, Nancy Crosby, and Jim Zarling who provided the support needed to secure and present the Clubs' with the 6th Ascent statue for the Pascua Yaqui Clubhouse.
It all started many, many years ago, when the first bronze was presented to the Clubs as a reminder of its mission to provide youth in our community with "a hand up" not a hand out...
The bronze, crafted by sculptor Gary Lee Price shares a poem below , written by Native American Poet Howard Rainer, as well as goes on to describe the time in his life when he sculpted it. For our Clubhouses, it has been a constant reminder of the work we do each day for our kids and our community.
Grab hold,
And take this hand that
Reaches out to you.
Look up
Into my eyes;
My spirit

Gary Lee Price's Narrative of Creating the Bronze
Two Native Americans are struggling on the face of a jagged cliff. The one above reaches out and extends himself, grasping for the one below. The one below looks up and also reaches out to receive the hand of safety and strength. Climbing the mountain of life we learn, grow and, hopefully, increase in wisdom. As we continue the trek, we realize it is not just about ourselves. It is then that we pause, turn around, and reach out our hand in assistance to those who can benefit from our travels.
This sculpture epitomizes the struggle to overcome opposition and difficult personal challenges and the absolute need we have for others to reach out, bring us in and raise us up.
Having grown up in the West and being a small part Cherokee, I've always had an affinity for capturing the spirit of my forefathers. I have aspired to create pieces that have depth. I have wanted to portray individuals of grace, strength, and beauty.
Several years prior to creating this piece, I went through a series of personal crises. It was a very difficult time for me and yet, as always, I was taken care of. Several close friends reached out and lifted me up in my hour of need. While creating this sculpture, I reached within. I relied on my own experiences, ones that showed me that people really do care and that our true friends are those who do not judge or shun, but rather reach out and bring us in. These are the individuals with complete grace, absolute strength, and true beauty.

Angel Charities' 2018 Bags, Baubles & Ballgowns Event Donates Gowns to Teen Club Members
Many of our teen Club members were excited to learn they could select the perfect gown for their upcoming special occasions when Angel Charities delivered several garment boxes full of beautiful ballgowns and cocktail dresses from their successful Bags, Baubles & Ballgowns event to raise awareness and funding for Tucson Village Farm..
The girls had so much fun trying on different looks and selecting the perfect dress. Their smiles said it all!

Boys & GIrls Clubs of Tucson's Club members' Art Selected to Participate in Online Exhibit
Exciting news! Three recent Parks in Focus participants have had their photos selected to be featured in
Tumacácori National Historical Park's Art in the Park 2
018 online exhibit, two of which are Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson's Club members! Congratulations to Andre (age 11) and Natalia (age 9) from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson and Anthony (age 11) from the Mulcahy/City YMCA!
Additionally, Andre and Anthony are two (of seven) Pass Perfect Finalists. The seven finalists had their artwork featured on Tumacácori's Facebook page throughout the last week and the most liked post will be featured on Tumacácori's 2019 annual pass.
Art in the Park showcases the work of artists and celebrates how Tumacácori inspires people to create. This year's exhibit was selected by a panel of staff from Tumacácori, the Tubac Center of the Arts, and the Tubac Presidio. Art in this exhibit ranges from photography to painting to mixed media work, but the glue that binds them is that the artists took the park as their inspiration.
The Pass Perfect Finalists have been selected by the panel as nominees for the 2019 park pass image. Between April 21 and April 27 these works were posted on the Tumacarori
Facebook page. The piece with the most likes won.
