AMTA-KY Chapter President Letter
Caren G. McCarty, President
Hello, I hope this newsletter finds you all healthy and happy.  So much has happened since our last newsletter.  March, April and May were very busy months for me.  I was a member of the Coalition of 13 people working on the "Healthy At Work Guidelines" for the State of Kentucky. I want you to know that this team made every effort to get us all back to work safely, no matter where you practice massage.  I would like to formally thank AMTA for the use of all of their communications to get the word out to our members. In May, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, announced May 25, 2020 would be the back to work date for all Kentucky Licensed Massage Therapists. See the official Guidelines here:  Kentucky Healthy At Work Guidelines.  We were elated that our team was able to come up with a plan to get us all back to work safely.

Since COVID-19 has brought up some unprecedented situations, National has been forced to change a few of their policies which guide AMTA as a non-profit. On a positive side to the COVID pandemic, this has given National the chance to look to see where they can serve their members better. Just in the past few months, your AMTA-KY Board and a few Volunteers have been working with AMTA on with training sessions and surveys to ensure all Chapters are running efficiently. The big take away...How do we function with zero face to face meetings and educational events? All Chapters were asked to participate and give feedback, giving National a lot to consider. All of these sessions were held virtually.  Chapter Volunteer Orientation Program (CVOP), Chapter Presidents Council (CPC) and the Assembly of Delegates (AOD) were also held virtually this year, since the AMTA National Convention in Phoenix, AZ was forced to be cancelled.

Due to COVID-19, National is not sure when we will be allowed to have our next face to face educational conference. So for now, your Board is planning the 2021AMTA-KY Annual Business Meeting only, which will be held virtually some time in March of 2021. See below for more information.  Unfortunately, we have had to put our face to face educational program on hold and are hoping to see you all again in March of 2022.  As any new information develops, we will reach out to you via FB, E-blast and Newsletter to keep you updated.

Remember, if you need any CE's, AMTA offers a variety of rigorously vetted massage therapy continuing education classes and training, available online. AMTA members save up to 40%!  Learn More Here

As you can see there has been quite a lot going on.  Please be sure to read the IMPORTANT information below written by Ann Boone from the Laws and Legislation Committee.  Keep yourself informed on your current laws.

Best Regards,
Caren McCarty
AMTA-KY Chapter President

2021 AMTA-KY Chapter
Annual Business Meeting
                  Is Going Virtual!

Annually, the AMTA-KY yearly Business meeting is held on Saturday during our March AMTA-KY Spring Conference. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we have decided, in the best interest of our members, to hold the 2021 Business Meeting virtually.  We don't have all the details worked out yet, but are working closely with AMTA National to bring this meeting to you.  Please look for more information coming to you soon so you can plan on connecting with us.
Laws and Legislation Update
Ann Boone, Laws and Legislation Chair
UPDATE 9/27/2020

The last KBLMT meeting was on Zoom on July 6, 2020. The successive meetings were cancelled for both August and September due to lack of quorum. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 5, 2020.

This is the most up-to-date information available on the KBLMT's website regarding board members:
  • VACANT, Member at Large, Board Chair
  • Brandy McDowell, LMT, Vice Chair
  • Robert Himes, Member at Large
  • VACANT, LMT
  • Cheryl Turner, LMT
  • Michael Grise, LMT
  • Marilyn Gossett, LMT
If you are interested in being on the KBLMT, please contact Tammy Sharp at (502) 782-8808 or Click here for the KBLMT website.

Massage bill updates from Rebecca Hartsough, AMTA-KY Lobbyist Bob Babbage's Office:

On 9/23/2020: Rep. Koch is moving forward with the legislation. Because the bill was a COVID casualty, it was already presented to the L&O Committee in the last interim, and passed the House, we will not have to present during the interim session this time. We've been given assurances by both Chair Koenig (House) and Chair Schickel (Senate).

So, as with most things in 2020, there is a lot in limbo right now with the KBLMT board shake up and our bill going back through the process. The good thing is that we don't need to go through a hearing as we did last year and the bill will be considered from the point it ended up (i.e. Passing the house committees and general house as well as senate committee). Now, it just needs to go through the final senate approval and then to the governor's office.

Special Note:  I would like to Thank Phillip Daugherty for his years of serving AMTA-KY on the Laws and Legislation Committee. His dedication is truly appreciated.  We will miss you.

Ann E. Boone, LMT, Inc.
AMTA-KY Government Relations Chair

AMTA-KY Chapter
2020 Assembly of Delegates (AOD) Report
By: Al Varghese, Senior Delegate

On September 15th, 2020, the Assembly of Delegates (AOD) had their first ever virtual meeting. Al Varghese and Devin Klein attended this year's meeting as the elected Delegates for the AMTA-KY Chapter. The AOD meeting is annually held during the AMTA National Convention, however this year due to COVID-19 shutdowns and mandates, the National Convention in Phoenix, AZ was cancelled. The AODAC (Assembly of Delegates Advisory Committee) decided to hold its meeting virtually with the help of the HUB platform and GoToWebinar video conference.

We are happy to announce our very own
AMTA-KY Chapter Member and Previous Past President,
Val Smothers, as the 2020 AMTA Teacher of the Year recipient.
CONGRATULATIONS VAL!  We are so proud of you!
AMTA-KY Chapter Member Spotlight
Lori Barnes

Lori Barnes is one of our membership chosen for this month's member spotlight.  Lori was born in Arkansas and was a self described "military brat" so has lived many places in her life.  She is a current Winchester resident and has lived there 26 years with her 14 year old daughter.

Lori is a graduate of Lexington Healing Arts Academy in 2009 and began her practice of massage therapy in 2015 at Winchester Therapeutic Massage, where she is still practicing.  She specializes in craniosacral therapy and will complete her certification this year.

She began her volunteer work with AMTA in 2019 by helping at the registration desk, and has taken on more responsibility by coordinating the Job Expo, a new feature at the Spring Conference in 2020.

Lori says in 5 years, she will be still doing massage because she "finally found a career that I love and I'm not giving it up any time soon". We are grateful for Lori's work with AMTA and looking forward to her future with the AMTA-KY Board!
