Sue Howell with White Lady Turnips
|
Thank you to all the gardeners who have brought in fresh produce donations recently. Here is Sue Howell, one of AFAC's top donors with a harvest of her favorite White Lady Turnips: a crisp, sweet turnip with smooth flesh and juicy tops! Sue recommends them shredded in a coleslaw, eaten raw or roasted. As spring moves into summer, greens, beets, carrots and fresh herbs are coming from donor gardens and our farmers market partners for clients.
Plot Against Hunger is partnering with the Arlington Art Truck at Crystal City Farmers Market and Rosslyn Farmers Market in July. Watercolor artist Marcella Kriebel will instruct visitors on watercoloring "Your Future Garden" and AFAC volunteers will pass out free seeds for summer and fall sowing.

Grow a Rainbow sign at Central Library
|
The Central Library garden is thriving, with beds full of mustard, canola, swiss chard and buckwheat; tomatoes, eggplants, beans, watermelon and squash. Stop by the next time you're at the library and take a look at the Grow a Rainbow signs that volunteer Mary Van Dyke has designed, to help guide library patrons through the growing season.

Thank you to nursing students from Marymount University and Chamberlain University for spending their community health rotation with AFAC! Since July of last year, we have had nearly 70 students work with AFAC and our families conducting cooking demonstrations, health education, and classes in Arlington. They also provided cooking demonstrations at the Arlington Free Clinic.
Thank you to Maggie, Stephanie, Annie, Jared, and Samantha, dietetic interns from Sodexo, Virginia Tech, and Virginia/Maryland WIC for spending their community elective with us! The interns conducted cooking demonstrations, classes, outreach education; provided training to nursing students; and created nutritional handouts for our families. Thanks to their help we will be debuting some new shelf tags in our Nelson St. distribution
over the next few months
