The pomp and circumstance will also be recorded so that families, students, friends and community members can enjoy the graduation by watching the video. MAP Test Results

Last month, students in Grades 3 through 10 completed NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) spring testing. An email will be sent out to parents this week, which will include an individual MAP Student Progress Report. This information will provide you with detailed information on your child’s academic progress and growth. Attached is a reference guide that defines the terms used in the report. If you have any questions, or do not receive test scores electronically by the end of next week, please contact your child’s school directly for a copy.
Get In The Summer Reading Game!

Find adventure and fun this summer by looking no further than a book! Students and their families are invited to participate in the 2018 Norwalk Summer Reading Challenge in partnership with the Norwalk Public Library by registering here . This year’s theme is “The Summer Game - READ, REST, REPEAT.” The game begins on June 3 and ends on August 31. Students will receive badges, raffle tickets, and prizes for their participation in the summer reading program.

Not sure what to read? The NPS reading list has something for everyone from a story about a little girl who fought against the odds to play music in “Ada’s Violin,” to a biography of America’s most famous traitor in “The Notorious Benedict Arnold: A True Story of Adventure, Heroism & Treachery.” Students can choose books from summer reading lists , or they can choose their own books. High school students participating in Honors, AP, and IB courses are assigned required readings from their teachers, which can be found on each school’s website.
Summer College Essay Writing Workshop

Writing a college essay is one of the most challenging but significant steps for rising seniors as they think about their academic future outside of NPS. To help with the process, Norwalk Education Foundation is organizing a summer college essay-writing workshop. The workshop will inspire students through a self-discovery process, and help them learn new ways of telling their story in order to write an effective college essay. One group session will be held in July with the goal of having a finished essay by the time school begins in August. The date of the workshop has not yet been determined. Please check the NEF website periodically for updates.

Summer is just around the corner! While there is still time to sign your children up for PF Camp, we recommend that you act quickly as space is limited. PF Camp has everything your children need to have a great camp experience including swimming, archery, golf, soccer, arts & crafts, board games, puzzle making, gardening, cooking, and many other hands-on activities and athletics. Staffed primarily by certified teachers, together with student employees and student volunteers, PF Camp gives families the flexibility to sign their children up for individual weeks, or for the entire 5-week session. Click here to register online. For additional information visit norwalkps.org or contact Director of Summer Programs Dan Sullivan at 203 838-4481, ext. 13272.
NPS Program Develops Leaders From Within

The NPS Leadership Pipeline was established to support the 2016-2019 Strategic Operating Plan goal of developing and implementing a leadership pipeline to cultivate emerging and high potential leaders. Cohort members of the RELAY Principal Fellowship and the New Leaders Emerging Leaders program have advanced into roles as principal, assistant principal, curriculum & instruction site directors and teacher/administrator positions at various schools. NPS will continue to prioritize leadership capacity building in our effort to improve student learning outcomes.

This year, Rob Pennington, Jacquelyn Aarons, Shannon Roman and Deborah Bell-Johnson completed the principal fellowship. Emerging Leaders graduates in 2017-2018 include  Amanda Marinez, Brian Irrera, Elizabeth Chahine, Jennifer Sweeters, Jo-Anne Minoff, Jonathan Lake, Leah Zilich, Mackenzie Merati, Monique Bartling and Tanika Vellucci . Next year, the Emerging Leaders program will evolve and serve in the development of the school leadership teams at Kendall and Jefferson

2018-19 Calendar: School Start Date

As voted on during last Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, the 2018/2019 school year calendar will remain the same as the version approved last spring. The first day of school for all students grades 1-12 will be August 29 with a staggered entry on August 29 and August 30 for Kindergartners.
School Start Time Reminder For 2018-19

Beginning with the 2018-19 school year, six out of 12 elementary schools will increase instructional time by 30 minutes. The additional time will be added to the beginning of the school day. As a result, Fox Run, Jefferson and Marvin will begin at 8:15 am and end at 2:25 pm. Brookside, Kendall and Tracey will begin at 8:50 am and end at 3:25 pm. As part of the instructional time expansion, schools are adding a fourth special subject to their academic program. The remaining NPS elementary schools are scheduled to increase instructional time with the start of the 2019-20 school year.
We Want To Hear From You: District Website Update

Understanding the needs of parents and staff provides the district with insight on how Norwalk Public Schools can best communicate with the community. Over the next several months, the NPS Communications and Information Technology departments will begin revamping the district website to better serve students, staff and parents. We are looking for parents and staff members who would be interested in providing input and possibly serve on an advisory committee in the future. If you are interested in volunteering, email Brenda Wilcox Williams at williams@norwalkps.org . Please title the subject of your email “NPS Website” and include any background information that might be helpful for us to know. Thank you in advance for your interest!
