Please RSVP for the Dinner so they know you're coming!

Our General Membership Meeting will follow the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.

Our agenda includes:
  • Presentation of 2019-2020 Budget and Vote
  • Financial Report
  • 2019-2020 Board Induction Ceremony
Email  president@puestadelsolpta.org with questions or comments.
Volunteer for Field Day!
Our annual Field Day is on  June 7th 2019  from 1:30-3pm  at the Puesta Del Sol fields.
Set up begins at 10am and clean up finishes at 4pm.

We need a lot of volunteers to make Field Day fantastic. This is always an exciting day to experience with your children and we need a lot of volunteer help to keep all the stations running.

Sign up to run a station, help set up, or clean up at the end of the day. We look forward to seeing you all there!
International Festival Depends on Many PTA Programs
House of cards Did you notice how spectacular the International Festival was? This festival is the conglomeration of so many PTA moving parts. Thank you to our Amity Committee, After-school program volunteers, and the PTA Chairpersons and VPs. As we look into next year... We are seeking Amity Intern host families for 2019-2020, we are seeking a Co-VP of Educational Enhancement, and we need more support for our after-school programs.
Please consider helping support this structure so we can keep our programs, like International Festival. Attend the PTA meeting on June 12 at 6pm or email us at  president@puestadelsolpta.org
Fundraising Results and Budget Shortfall 2018-19
As reported in our March 15th El Sol Newsletter, our fundraising results this year fell well short of our $145,000 goal and we find that we have an approximate $30,000 shortfall for this year's expenses. This is not an emergency since we have a surplus from years of successful fundraising.  We had also expected fundraising receipts may be somewhat lower than our needs coming into this current school year on the tails of an auction year.  The PTA had promised at the start of this year to only ask for donations one time based on survey feedback about fundraising from prior years and we kept that promise.
Going forward...  The PTA Board and budget committee have communicated with and sought insight from the membership in the form of fundraising updates, membership meetings, fundraising focus groups, and presenting our fall survey results.  Participation in many of these activities was less than we hoped for.  As we prepare our budget for the upcoming year, the PTA Board requests additional budget involvement from our PTA members!

There will be two budget "preview" meetings during the next 2 weeks ahead of our budget vote at the June 12th PTA General Membership Meeting. At these meetings we will discuss potential cuts for programs and expenses for the next school year and/or additional fundraising options. These meetings are for PTA members only.

Please join us for one of these meetings if you can.

Wednesday June 5th at 9 am - PTA Room
Thursday June 6th at 2:30 pm - PTA Room

If you are unable to attend, feel free to reach out to our budget committee at budgetcommittee@puestadelsolpta.org to provide your thoughts, concerns, or schedule a chat at a different time.

Thank you,
Budget Committee and Puesta del Sol PTA Board

Spanish Immersion Through the Arts (SITA)
IF Mexican Folkloric
What an amazing, busy year we've had for  Spanish Immersion Through the Arts (SITA)

Kinder:  Had a great time singing along with Marco Cortez and his ukulele and guitar.

Kinder & 1 st  grade:  Wrote poems with writer Maria Victoria.

4th  grade:  Enjoyed a writing workshop with  Writers in the School . Some of the 4th  graders' poems will be published by the organization Seattle Arts and Lectures.

K - 5th grade:  Learned about the origins of Latin American textiles by making designs and woven art with Adriana Morales that we hope to incorporate into our new school. Sra. Morales also provided a very popular interactive table at Art Fest where students learned to weave.
SITA invited professional Folkloric dancer Maricela Bustos to teach a free 8-week class for a group of 3rd  - 5th grade students. These students then gave a mesmerizing performance at the International Festival.

We are hoping to continue these exciting activities that enrich our students' Spanish experience next school year.

However, SITA needs new volunteers to join and chair the committee!   If you want to help bring unique art that is rich in the Spanish language and culture to our Puesta del Sol students, please email volunteer@puestadelsolpta.org .
"El Sol Brilla Para Los Animalitos" - Puesta del Sol's Father-Daughter Dance for 4th & 5th Graders
Hey Puesta del Sol dads (and father figures)! It's time to get your groove on, boogie down, and shake, shake, shake, your---well, you get the point. Time flies when you're having fun, so take advantage of this opportunity to have your daughter all to yourself for an evening while you still can! Get your Father's Day weekend off to a great start by taking her to Puesta del Sol's sixth annual father-daughter dance. "El Sol Brilla Para Los Animalitos" (The Sun Shines for the Little Animals) is an event to benefit the stray and unwanted animals of Seattle Humane Society. All you have to do is bring a donation of cat or dog food and/or your old cell phones. You will not only create a special memory for you and your daughter, but you'll be joining forces with other Puesta del Sol dads to make a difference for some local animals in need (and be your daughter's hero, which is always a plus).
  • ¿Para Quién?:  Any dad (or father figure) and his 4th or 5th grade daughter who is a current student at Puesta del Sol
  • ¿Dónde?:  Puesta del Sol Cafegymatorium

  • ¿Cuándo?:  Friday, June 14, 6:30--8:00pm

  • ¿Por qué?:  To benefit the stray and unwanted animals of Seattle Humane Society and make a special memory with your daughter

  • Otra cosa:  Don't forget your phone/camera!

**Volunteers are welcome to help out before, during, or after the dance.   Please contact Sr. Mattson if interested:  kjellandclaudia@netzero.net
We Need Your Support! Consider Hosting an Amity Intern During the 2019-2020 School Year
We are looking for 6 more host families for our Amity interns in the 2019-2020 school year . As a host family you gain a new, unique friendship and learning experience by welcoming an intern from a Spanish speaking country into your home. Additionally, your child will benefit from extra practice and help with their Spanish language skills.

Being a Host Family entails providing a private bedroom, a bath (which can be shared), 3 meals a day, and is an invaluable experience for host families.  If you are even a little interested, please refer to the  FAQs  for more information, then complete the  Amity Intern Host Family Application  and send it to  amity@puestadelsolpta.org

We are continuing to collect applications until we achieve our goal.

Each of these grades have explored unique  approaches, including outside resources and strategies in support of student achievement. Hear what we have learned and our preliminary plans for 2019-2020.

Library News - End of Year!
stack_of_books.jpg
Thank You Bellevue Schools Foundation - a BIG thank you to BSF for funding the up-coming Story Teller, Debra Harris Branham on Tuesday, June 11th. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades are sure to enjoy this African American story teller.
Checking Out Books - Last day for check out will be Friday, May 31st*. Each year at least 3 weeks are needed to get everyone to return their books before the end of the school year. Students who turn their books in after May 31st will receive a raffle ticket for a drawing for a variety of prizes which will be in the library during Field Day. Books not returned by 5th graders will remain on their account in Middle and High school. *Classes will still continue in the library until the end of the year.
Overdue or Lost Books - If your student has an overdue book, an email will be sent out with the name and cost of the book. Please make all checks out to Puesta del Sol or go to the BSD website and click on "Fines" (you must use your student's Student ID to pay for the book). If the book is paid for and is found before the end of the school year, we can refund the cost of the book if it is $20 or more.
Volunteers Needed - It is inventory time in the library. Each year we scan the barcodes of over 12,000 books in order to update our book collection. It's an easy job, which can be done slowly from now until the end of the year. If you have an hour or so in your week to come and help out, you would be much appreciated!!

Your passion and drive for our Puesta del Sol Students have not gone unnoticed. You have dedicated many hours to our school. Your work supports our students with Art Appreciation, Passport Club, and various classroom experiences on- and off-campus such as Toymaker, 5th grade Olympia trip, and 4th grade Pacific Marine Research trip. The PTA communications, programs, events, academic and art enhancements have been important threads to our Puesta del Sol fabric. We hope to continue this work in your absence.

With much Gratitude,
The Puesta del Sol Community

Web Content Manager Needed
Our web team is shifting roles and we are looking for a new Web Content Manager. If you are a detail-oriented person who can edit a Word document and plan a child's birthday party, then you have all the experience we need! Our current Web Content Manager, Todd, is taking on new Web responsibilities next year as our Web Manager Cindy shifts to serve on the PTA board of directors. Both Todd and Cindy can bring you up to speed on the website.

Please email
to find out more.
PTA El Sol Newsletter Editor Needed
El Sol Newsletter
The PTA is actively seeking an editor for our PTA Newsletter (El Sol). Our current editor has taken on a new role as  Co-VP of Communications . However, she will be available to train the new editor and offer support and back-up throughout next school year. Editing duties include:
  • Soliciting and compiling articles from PTA committees for El Sol publication
  • Placing content in El Sol via the PTA's Constant Contact portal
  • Coordinating school announcements/information with the communications team.
  • Time commitment is approximately 2-4 hours per week, averaging 2 hours a week most of the year.

It should be noted that the articles submitted to the El Sol Editor will be complete; they will be fully written up and proof-read by at least two parties prior to the Editor being requested to place them in the newsletter. This is to take the burden of writing and editing off this Editor position. This is a great way to work from home and be active in the PTA's activities and promotions. Ideal candidates are comfortable with using computers, have basic word processing software, are timely and detail oriented, and are able to commit for at least a full school year. Interested parties please contact

Making School Supplies Easier
school_supplies_blackboard.jpg
Every year, the PTA notices discussions in the parent groups on Facebook and around school about school supplies. Questions come up about how to make school supplies easier for every family and the PTA would love your help in actually DOING something about it! We are looking for a volunteer to be a "School Supply Coordinator". The person in this role would:

 - Interview teachers and specialists about their real supply needs, what they have left over, and what they need for the year ahead.
 - Build a bulk purchasing list for Staples/Office Depot/Amazon.
 - Help plan the pricing for families in each grade based on the supplies needed.
 - Purchase and coordinate the distribution of supplies

Let's make getting school supplies cheaper and easier for all our families. Email
if you can help and want to find out more.
