 Canadian Coast Guard Expands Auxiliary SAR to Nunavik. The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary plans to expand its network to Nunavik for the first time, and to new communities in Nunavut. The CCG Auxiliary is a Canada-wide network of hundreds of coastal communities whose volunteers contribute search and rescue resources to CCG-led marine rescue efforts.

Gen Breedlove-Congressional Testimony. As I arrive at the end of my assignment as both Commander of U.S. European Command (EUCOM) and Supreme Allied Commander for Europe (SACEUR), I have had no greater honor in my 39-year career than to lead the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen and civilians of EUCOM. These remarkable men and women continue to serve not only in the EUCOM theater, but put themselves in harm's way across the globe and I thank this Committee for its continued support to them and all our nation's armed forces.

Paul Zukunft delivered the 2016 state of the Coast Guard address Tuesday, recognizing the 88,000 men and women who serve in the Coast Guard, and thanking the Congress and the Administration for delivering an authorization bill along with the largest acquisition budget in the Coast Guard's history.

When the steamship Belvedere left San Francisco in the spring of 1897, its crew members couldn't have known what a treacherous voyage awaited them. Their life-and-death experiences would be captured in the ship's log, which started out with this unassuming entry: "At 3 PM took anchor, steamed to sea with a crew of 44 men, all told, bound to the Arctic Ocean."

[Opinion] Research Cuts at Alaska Universities Would Protect Today's Ignorance at Tomorrow's Expense. The University of Alaska is committed to teaching, research and public service. Among these, research is least understood. Some people think research means looking things up in the library, but research in a university means creation of new knowledge. In any state, the state university plays a unique and sacred role in government. It is the place where future leaders of society receive their education, and where knowledge is archived, analyzed, discussed, taught and made available to the public through extension services. Visual and performing arts are perfected and presented, and new knowledge is created by vigorous research. There is a synergy among these three commitments and the whole is bigger than the parts. The university's role in improving music, drama, visual arts and overall quality of life in Alaska increases in proportion to the way all three of these components are strengthened and increased in scope.

 Norway Funds Arctic Environmental Research. The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is providing NOK 14.3 million ($1.6 million) for a project to reduce environmental risk in connection with oil and gas activities in northern sea areas. 'It is crucial to reduce the effects of human activities on the marine environment in the Arctic. Supporting this project is an important contribution to sustainable development of key natural resources in the Arctic. These resources include petroleum and could offer major opportunities for value creation,' said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.

15th Annual Arctic Health Science Seminar, April 1, 2016 (Anchorage, Alaska, USA).
The American Society for Circumpolar Health will host the 15th Annual Arctic Health Science Seminar in Anchorage, Alaska. This event will include the annual meeting of the American Society for Circumpolar Health, the Robert Fortuine Memorial lecture, and the Albrecht Milan Foundation will provide the Albrecht-Milan Emerging Professional Award to one of the Arctic Health Science Seminar presenters. The American Arctic: The United States as an Arctic Power in Science, Technology and Security, April 4, 2016 (San Francisco, CA, USA). The Association of American Geographers will host a panel discussion on the American Arctic.
In 2015 the United States assumed the chairmanship of the Arctic Council. In recent years, the Federal government began to pay closer attention to the Arctic owing to dramatic environmental and social changes and growing economic interest in the region's vast resources. President Obama became the first sitting US President to visit the Arctic this August. US Arctic Research Commission Chair Fran Ulmer is expected to be a panelist.
Alaska Rural Energy Conference, April 26-28, 2016 (Fairbanks, Alaska, USA). The Alaska Rural Energy Conference is a three day event offering a large variety of technical sessions covering new and ongoing energy projects in Alaska, as well as new technologies and needs for Alaska's remote communities. Building on the growing success, the Alaska Energy Authority and the Alaska Center for Energy and Power have joined forces again to organize and sponsor the 10th annual Alaska Rural Energy Conference.
14th IATS Seminar, June 19-25, 2016 (Bergen, Norway).
The University of Bergen (UiB) is honored to host the 14th IATS Seminar in Bergen, Norway, from Sunday 19 to Saturday 25 June 2016 in co-operation with the Network for University Co-operation Tibet-Norway, an academic network with the universities of Oslo, Bergen and Tromsø as partners. The convenor is Professor Hanna Havnevik, Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages, University of Oslo, and Chair of the Network.
Inuit traditions are a repository of Inuit culture and a primary expression of Inuit identity. The theme for the 2016 Inuit Studies Conference invites Elders, knowledge-bearers, researchers, artists, policy-makers, students and others to engage in conversations about the many ways in which traditions shape understanding, while registering social and cultural change. The institutional hosts of "Inuit Traditions," Memorial University of Newfoundland and the Nunatsiavut Government, invite you to contribute to an exchange of knowledge to be held in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, October 7-10, 2016. Presentations on all aspects of Inuit studies will be welcome.
