Welcome June. We are almost at the end of another school year. Congratulations to all of our four and five year olds who will be going to kindergarten in the fall. Thank you to all of our Pre-K parents, teachers and students. Your hard work and team effort has paid off, and we are confident that your children will be fully prepared for kindergarten and much success in their future schools years.

Our Daycare/Preschool year is wrapping up with a focus on science! Each class is displaying their Domed Ladybug Land with approximately 10 insect-like larvae.  Ladybug larvae change into the pupa stage in two days.  They will remain in the pupa stage for about five days and then will emerge as adult ladybugs.  The teachers will have plenty of raisins on hand, as this is what they like to eat as they strengthen their shells.  The classes have also been watching their caterpillars change into chrysalises and then butterflies.  They have been giving their butterflies fresh oranges each day, and soon will be releasing them outdoors.

Many of our Daycare students will be moving up to a new class in July. It is amazing to see how much they have grown and developed .The week of June 24th - June 28th will be an orientation period. Throughout this week, the children will go to their current classrooms. The teachers and children will talk about the new class, visit the class, and meet their new teachers. Our vacation week is July 1st - July 5th, during which Christ the King Daycare is closed. Everyone will begin in their new class the week of July 8th, which is the 1st week of our Summer Fun Program. You will receive a moving up/welcome email telling you about your child's new class. We are also so proud that they are ready to move on to the next level of learning and there is no better time for learning and fun than the summer at CTK.

Our teachers and administrators are here for you to answer any questions you may have and offer support if needed to help make this transition as pleasant as possible for you and your child. You child's progress report will be given out the last week of June.

We are gearing up for our Summer Program starting July 8th.  Each week is packed with fun and excitement, with intellectually and physically challenging learning experiences.  There are weekly themes and many activities planned for the entire summer.  We have special guests, live entertainment, computer games, sports, sprinklers and more.

  • Our Daycare Center is open from 7am - 7pm.

  • Please remember to apply sunscreen to your child each morning before coming to school.
  • Please remember to make sure your child's cubby contains weather-appropriate clothing. We also appreciate all of our parents continuing to bring in diapers and a box of wipes twice each month on the 1st and the 15th.
  • When calling the facility, please keep in mind that calls should be ideally made between 12-2pm while the children are napping.
  • We ask that you do not allow your child(ren) to run ahead of you when entering and leaving the facility, it is a safety issue. Especially when exiting the building, children should never open the security door.
  • Strollers that are left in our storage area must be closed

We thank you for your cooperation with these matters.

Science with the Snugglies II
We are getting ready for the summer, and we are very curious to learn about the changes in weather!  Now that it's nicer outside, we are seeing a change in our playground.  We're noticing the new leaves growing on trees, birds flying around, and the sun shining down on our faces as we explore the playground.  Other days, it rains and we are sad because we can't go outside.   In the classroom, the babies of Snugglies II had tons of fun exploring with paint.  For our insect project we helped them walk across the pink paper with purple paint on their feet. Once the paint dried we cut them into the shape of butterflies and we added eyes and antennae. They enjoyed squishing the paint between their toes.  We look forward to more fun with paint!

Science with the Puppies
Each day, the Puppies are busy learning new vocabulary and concepts to associate with the world around them.  Lately, we have been introducing the words "hot" and "cold" in the classroom, especially during lunch time.  When we tell the kids the food is hot, they will blow on it to cool off, which is very cute.  Now that the weather is getting nice and we have been going outside a lot more.  The kids will play for a while before we say that they are getting hot.  We use a spray bottle to mist the children who like it, and tell them that the water is cold.  There's no better way, however, to cool off from the hot playground than with a cold squeeze pop!  Yum!

Science with the Chipmunks
It's time for us to be scientist again. Recently, we conducted a solution experiment and a chemical reaction explosion with our volcano.  In May, we created a tornado.  During story time the class read a book explaining to them what a tornado was. The class took turns looking at the pictures so they could see what it looked like.  Then we explained to them how we could make our own in a bottle.  We used six small empty water bottles. Everyone took turns in helping to create the tornadoes.

In the first two bottles we put some cut up construction paper.  In the next two we added some glitter.  In the last two bottles we put in sequins.   The Chipmunks added water to each one, as well as a few drops of liquid detergent and different color drops of food coloring.  The caps were put on and taped.  Six children at a time was given the bottles and told to shake and spin the bottles.  When they stopped shaking and spinning, the class was asked what happened inside the bottle.  They answered excitedly that everything kept spinning round and round just like a real tornado.  The children were able to connect what happens with a tornado from what they learned in the story, to making their own hands on tornado and they had fun in the process.

Science with the Turtles
Last month, the Turtles learned a lot about science!  For starters, we began planting our own flowers, which requires a lot of scientific knowledge.  We have learned what is required to make plants strive once they are planted.  We have also learned how a plant comes to be; from the seeds being buried into the soil, needing water and sunlight to making its own food.  We've learned a new term called "photosynthesis" as well.  Photosynthesis is the process in which plants create their own nutrients- in other words, photosynthesis is how plants eat!  We now know the process of photosynthesis would not work if a plant did not get water or sunlight.  We've also been using our measuring cups lately to help us measure out how much soil and water our plants need on a daily basis.  We've also learned that because of all the rain we've had during the month of April, many new plants and flowers are blooming in May- "April showers bring May flowers".  Due to the saturation from the rain, the warmer temperatures and the abundance of sunshine, many flowers are growing and decorating our parks and gardens with the beautiful colors of Spring!
Mathematicians

Math with the Bunnies
The Bunnies have been learning their shapes, colors and numbers by reviewing flashcards and participating in art projects.  While reviewing flashcards, the children have been able to interpret objects as shapes, such as a ball is shaped like a circle, or a party hat is a triangle.  The Bunnies learned the colors pink and purple as they helped create Mother's Day gifts.  We also reinforced counting last month.  The Bunnies counted seeds as they planted their Mother's Day plants.  The Bunnies had also learned the colors green and red as they created their own Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Math with the Lions
Number numbers all around, everywhere they can be found!  I don't know where I would be if numbers weren't a part of me!

We had a fun time this year learning our numbers.  The games that we played and projects we've done all helped us work on counting and identifying number zero to twenty.  Last month we came up with a fun and interactive way to review our numbers while recycling.  We took twenty old detergent caps and taped one number on each cap. Then we found a little plastic dog and viola, and we had a game.   The children were told to close their eyes real tight and we hid our little dog under one of the numbers.  Once he was hidden they opened their eyes and one by one they picked a number and lifted the cap to see where he was hiding there.  This was probably one of the best games we have come up with this year.  We played so many variations of the game.  The children wanted so badly to win a dog so we just played over and over.  My favorite games to play with them are always the ones they love and don't even realize they are learning while having fun.

Math with the Dolphins
The unit of topic for the month of May was "Babies."  For math, students have engaged in activities that relate to the topic of babies.  One activity the students participated in was called, "Egg Hatch Match."  Before doing the activity as a class, we watched a video about animals that hatch from eggs and animals that do no hatch from eggs. Then for the activity "Egg Hatch Match" students were given cracked eggs made out of felt.  One part of the egg had a numeral on it and the other part of the egg had the corresponding number of dots. Students were invited to reassemble the scrambled parts of the egg by matching the correct numerals and dots together.

A second activity we did as a class, that related to the topic of babies, was measuring our height using baby bottles.  As a class we cut out baby bottles and taped it to a block.  We then stacked the blocks with the baby bottles to measure our height. Once the blocks with the baby bottles taped to it matched our height, we then counted how many baby bottles we were as tall as.

Just how we learned about "Babies" during the month of May, we will soon being learning about "Transformation" and about how things change over time.  For example, a baby caterpillar will turn into a butterfly.

Little Picassos

Art with the Ducks
The month of May's unit topic was "Babies."  For Art, stdents mixed baby powder together with paint.  After mixing in the baby powder, students observed what happened to the paint; it got thicker and smelled great!  Students then painted their own pictures and answered the focus question, "How did the baby powder change the paint?"

Another Art activity we did was to create baby rattles.  Students put beads into a cup and then taped another cup on top.  This secured the beads inside the cups.  Then students used foam stickers, markers, feathers, and crayons to decorate the rattles.  Students discussed what a rattle is and what it is used for.  Students compared their rattles to see if they made different noises.

Art with the Sunflowers
Art is presented in your child's everyday lives! The Sunflowers are always doing fun projects with crayons, markers, paint and paintbrushes, and best of all, with their feet!  Last month, the Sunflowers used their feet to make many different projects. The Sunflower teachers painted the children's feet to make special projects for the month, such as bees and ladybugs. When using your child's feet for painting, it helps with their sensory skills.  The children are always laughing and giggling because painting their feet tickles them!  The Sunflowers love painting with their feet, but they especially love doing art projects everyday!

Musicians in the Making

Music with the Kitties
Music is always a favorite part of the Kitties' day.  We spend a lot of time dancing, singing and learning with music.  We especially love our time with Mr. Kenny.  They love singing "Hello Friends" because they not only get to say their friends' names, they love hearing their own!  Many of them kick their feet or clap when they hear their own name.  Imagine the excitement added to all of this by going to the stage to practice for the Mr. Kenny Spring Show!!  What could be more fun??  We got to sit on the stage with not just our Angel friends, but all our daycare friends!  The Kitties loved singing and dancing to all the classes songs, not just their own!  When it came time for us to finally shine in the show, the children did great!  We are sure that all of our families and friends could see just how much fun the Kitties had throughout the year with Mr. Kenny!

Music with the Monkey's
Welcome to June! The end of our school year is here, but that doesn't mean the learning has. This year has been a great year with all the love that has been felt from you, the parents.  During the month of May, we learned about the colors pink and purple. At our music room time the Monkey's sang the "Purple Song," using different bells. On one occasion, we used the small classroom bells to the rhythm of the purple themed song. Then as a group we sang the song with the wrest bells, which all the children said sounded like Christmas. By experimenting with different bells we were able to hear changes to the way the songs sounded. When we clap to the rhythm, it also sounded different then when we used the bells. We were demonstrating to children how different voices and instruments make all music unique.

Purple Song
(to the tune of Camptown Ladies)
P-u-r-p-l-e, purple, purple
P-u-r-p-l-e, purple is what that spells
Purple grapes on the vine
Purple Kool-aid's fine
P-u-r-p-l-e, purple is what that spells

Music with the Pandas
The Pandas spent a lot of time singing and dancing this month in preparation for the Music Recital!  We explored different instruments that make loud noises and soft noises.  We also learned about different types of sounds the instruments can make and discussed why they make different sounds.  For example, we listened to differences between kick drums, hand drums, and acoustic drums.  We also explored instruments such as pianos and flutes, and what kind of songs we would hear those instruments in.

To explore the theme of Babies, the Pandas listened to lullabies on the Smart Board and learned why parents sing lullabies to babies to help them sleep. We learned and sang Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, Rock-a-bye baby, & Hush, Little Baby.
We transformed our music center into a lullaby station for all babies to come and listen to music while they sleep. The Pandas enjoyed singing along to the songs and pretending to put the baby dolls to sleep.  As a class, we discussed which songs our parents sang to us when we were l babies and played them for the class.

Athletes in Training

Gym with the Angels
The Angels love to be active, and love gym time!  Some gym time activities that the Angels really enjoy doing are riding bikes, riding the roller-coaster and using the parachute.  The bikes are always a big hit, especially because there are a variety of different colored bikes.  As the children ride the bikes, they always shout out which color bike they are using at that moment.  Another activity the Angels really love is the parachute.  All of the children and teachers grab a loop from the parachute, and watch the parachute gently float through the air as we all move our arms up and down.  Some of the children even try to run as quickly as they can underneath the parachute as it gently glides up in the air!  The Angels always have a lot of fun in the gym, and look forward to this special time each and every day.

Gym with the Bumblebees
As the Bumblebees are growing bigger, so are their motor skills! We began playing a new game in the gym that we like to call, "Color Hop."    Several hoola hoops of assorted colors are laid out on the floor across the gym. When Miss Karolina shouts out a color, the children must run and find a hoola hoop of that color. Next, when everyone is at the correct hoola hoop the children must jump in and out of the hoop 9 times, being that 9 is our number of the month. The children love this activity and it's a great way for them to do exercise in a fun way!

Tech Time with the Bears
In May, the Unit of Study was "Babies."  This theme was represented throughout all of the centers in the classroom.  The students were able to engage in many multisensory activities.  During small group time, the students used the Smart Board to play a game of sorting items that a baby would need, such as: diapers, bottles, bib, rattles, clothes, cribs and pacifiers.  The Bears also played a fun pattern game with babies, where they had to click and drag the different items in either an A-B, ABC, or AA-BB pattern.  The Bears also had the opportunity to play a new game on our I-Pads.  The activity was all about how to take care of a baby.  The children had to sort and sequence the order what things a baby may need, such as: diapers, clothes, bottles or pacifiers, blankets, and toys.
The Nurse's Station

As the school year comes to an end, here are a few reminders we still need to be mindful of.
  • Keep in mind that we are a peanut-free school. Please help us to maintain a nut free environment by refraining from sending any such items (nuts, peanut butter, almond butter, any items containing nut oils, etc.) to school with your children.
  • Please be sure to regularly update your child's dietary restriction and allergy forms.
  • We are mandated by the Department of Health to keep records of all physicals and immunizations.  Please submit these forms in a timely manner.
  • Please remember to pick up your child's medications from the nurse's office, as they will be discarded on the last day of school. Also, Medication Forms for next year are available.

Additionally, please take note of the next few outdoor reminders.
  • Please remember to apply sunscreen every morning and bring in a labeled bottle for your child.
  • Sunhats or caps are a wonderful shield from the sun but please consider safety. Please be sure that hats or caps do not obstruct your child's view.
  • Please keep in mind your child is wearing the proper footwear.  Sandals and flip-flops look adorable but may become a potential hazard for running and climbing.  Please see that your child is wearing toe-enclosed sandals or sneakers.

Please Keep in Mind: The 24 Hour Rule of Thumb!
Students may return to Daycare or Pre-K after the following:
  • 24 hours without a fever (and without taking fever reducing medications such as Tylenol or Motrin)
  • 24 hours without nausea, vomiting or diarrhea (and tolerating a normal diet)
  • 24 hours of receiving medication (such as antibiotics)

Happy Father's Day!
Quotes
Angels
When the Angels walk to the gym, they always stop to admire the different paintings on the wall in the hallway. P.J noticed a spider painted on the wall and said, "Oh a spider. It's spooky!"

Bears
The Bears were playing in our dramatic play center, which was set up as a baby nursery to reflect the monthly theme. Olivia, Mackenzie, Isabelle and Gia were playing house and taking care of the babies. Olivia said to them, "Hey Moms we need to feed the babies before they go to school." The girls all said, "Yeah, let's get the cereal and put in the bottles." Then Olivia said, "No Moms. You need to feed the baby like this (she held the baby all wrapped up in a blanket, and held the bottle in its mouth). Mackenzie asked, "Olivia, does your mommy feed the new baby like that?"  Olivia exclaimed, "Yes! That's why I am showing YOU how to feed the baby. "

Bumblebees
One day Miss Karolina asked Bella if she was a boy or girl. Bella replied "I'm a Bella!"

Bunnies
Margot always askes to the song, "Baby Shark" and sings it on her own when playing in the classroom.  She had been playing with the blocks one day with Cooper and they both began to sing, "Baby Shark."

Chipmunks
One afternoon during snack time Christopher said, "I'm so hungry!"  Jake said to him, "Well if you're so hungry, eat your goldfish and stop talking!"

Dolphins
While doing the activity "Egg Hatch Match", Miss Theresa asked students if they can think of any other animals that hatch that were not mentioned in the video.
Abigail said: "Dinosaurs used to hatch from eggs but now they are extinct which means there is no more of them."

Ducks
When discussing what babies need, Elia said, "I know everything about babies because I take care of so many baby dolls at home."

Kitties
Miss Katie was asking Aiden to name the colors of the hula hoops.  "What color is this one?"  "Blue!"  "And what color is this one?"  "Purple!"  "Good! Which is your favorite?"  "Hmmm... Miss Katie!"

Lions
On one of the hotter days of the month we came in from the playground and Grace said she was hot and sweaty. Miss Melissa said jokingly, "I can poor some water on your head." Grace replied, "No you can't. I'm not a cup."

Monkeys
One morning during circle time when we were singing the month's song Avery said, "My daddy's birthday is May 12th."

Pandas
When exploring the theme of Babies, Mia L. and Matthew were playing "house."  Mia said to Matthew, when I grow up, I want to have a big baby shower for my baby. There will be lots of cupcakes!  Matthew responded, "Why are you going to have so many cupcakes?  Babies can't even eat them!"

Sunflowers
Giovanni was bouncing around during free play. Miss Ashley asked him, "Gio, what are you doing?" Giovanni replied, "I'm getting exercise!"

Turtles
Over the past weekend, Brooke had a birthday party! When she came to school on Monday, before even saying "hello" to her friends she shouted, "Look how tall I am since I turned 5!"
