Letter from the Artistic Director

Shiver me timbers! Fire the cannons! Swab the poop deck! All hands on the main stage deck for our comic extravaganza, Pirates! Theodore Thud and the Quest for Weird Beard. This Young Rep production, with swashbuckling sea dogs, mysterious mermaids, and a ghost named Harriet, runs one weekend only! Performances are Friday, May 4, at 7:00pm, Saturday, May 5, at 7:00pm, and Sunday, May 6, at 2:30pm.

Pirates! marks the unofficial kickoff of our Young Rep Summer, with classes, auditions, productions, and showcases all featuring the impressive junior members of our Toledo Rep family.

On Saturday, May 12 at 12:15pm, you can catch the free showcase of our Spring Rep Ed session, sharing the work of our "Playmaking 101" class. Did I mention that it's free?

That said, the adults still have some unfinished business. In the middle of YRS (that is, Young Rep Summer), our Mainstage Season comes to a close with the Tony Award-winning musical, Sweet Charity. With a book by Neil Simon, classic Broadway songs like "Big Spender," and that Fosse-inspired choreography, tickets are already going fast. Debra Ross Calabrese directs and choreographs.

Now, back to YRS. (Can't you just see that on a t-shirt?) We have three terrific summer camps, each with multiple instructors. Each camp runs a week, Monday through Friday, from 9:00-3:00pm, with a culminating showcase on Friday afternoon. "From Big Screen to Broadway" goes from June 25-29; "Broadway: Best of the West End" from July 16-20; and "Creating Theatre: Onstage/Offstage/Backstage" from July 23-27. Slots are filling up fast, so call soon.

Our summer Young Rep productions are Heathers the Musical (High School Edition), July 12-15; and Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr., August 2-5. Auditions for Schoolhouse will be May 20 from 3:00-6:00pm and May 22 from 5:30-7:30pm.

I'm pleased to announce that The Rep was recently voted "Best Local Theatre Group" by the Toledo City Paper. If you're one of the 37,000 readers who cast a ballot, our sincerest thanks.

Finally, if there's something you'd like to see produced on our stage or offered as a class or brought to your venue, we're open to suggestions. Call 419-243-9277 or visit our user-friendly website - www.toledorep.org -- for more information.

See you at the theatre.

Young Rep Teen Musical, Ages 14-19

Based on the classic 1989 film,  Heathers the Musical (High School Edition) is the darkly delicious story of Veronica Sawyer, a brainy, beautiful teenage misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful group of shoulder-padded, scrunchie-wearing girls at Westerberg High. The Heathers are the hottest, cruelest, most ruthless clique in all of Ohio, but before Veronica can get comfortable atop the high school food chain, she falls in love with the dangerously handsome new kid J.D. When Heather Chandler, the Almighty, kicks her out of the group, Veronica and J.D. decide to put the Heathers in their place-six feet under. The New York Times calls this hilarious, heartfelt, and homicidal new musical "a rowdy guilty pleasure," and Variety raves, "Heathers the Musical should score with just about everyone."

Auditions can be nerve-wracking, but they are also creative treasures if you have the tools and confidence to make them so. In this class you will work on monologues, sides, and cold reads, learning tips and techniques that will allow you to shine. You will discover the importance of making strong choices and the necessity of learning to decipher "director speak."

Adult actors of any level of experience are welcome. This class is only 4 weeks, so in order to make the most of the time, you will be required to bring 3 copies of a monologue and 3 copies of a scene you would be thrilled to perform to the first class.

Local Writer Sets Black Comedy Amid Events of 9/11

"The Toledo Repertoire Theatre wraps up the second season of its "Toledo Voices" series Saturday evening with Charmed Like a Snake, I'm Sure, by Deborah Coulter-Harris.

"Toledo Voices" premieres previously unproduced plays by local writers in a series of staged readings at the theater. Another of Coulter-Harris's plays, Sheba Rules, was among the works chosen for the series' inaugural season in 2017.
Coulter-Harris describes Charmed Like a Snake, I'm Sure as "a mysterious and farcical tragedy/black comedy set during the chaos surrounding 9/11; it involves several fictional characters and events at the Central Intelligence Agency." Coulter-Harris once worked for the CIA as a Middle East political analyst".

UT NEWS

Dr. Deborah Coulter-Harris will debut her second play, Charmed Like a Snake, I'm Sure, Saturday, April 28, at 8 p.m. at the Toledo Repertoire Theatre. The event is part of the Toledo Rep's "Toledo Voices" staged readings series.

"This play is not so much about the CIA as it is with human nature, with its Nietzschean impulse for power and authority over others," said Coulter-Harris, senior lecturer in the Department of English Language and Literature. "The play also touches on current universal political themes of instability, mendacity and untrustworthiness. The ending of the play will leave the audience in shock."
