News From St. Sarkis Church
By order of the Prelate, Archbishop Anoushavan, Flag Blessing and Prayers for the Armenian Republic will be offered in Prelacy parishes either this Sunday, May 26, or next Sunday, June 2.

One hundred and one years ago, the Armenian people were miraculously resurrected after the Genocide, under God's holy protection and the brave and dedicated clergy and lay leaders victoriously created the first free and independent Republic of Armenia that assured survival. Requiem services will be offered for the fallen heroes of Sardarabad, Bashabaran, Gharakilise, and the martyrs of the struggle for Artsakh.

Bless, O Lord, this tricolor flag. And just as after the flood you placed your rainbow on Mt. Ararat and established a covenant with mankind, now too after the flowing of so much holy and heroic blood, may this flag with its beautiful colors be sealed as a sign of our covenant with you.

Bless, O Lord, our country, our Fatherland, where you established the paradise of bliss at the time of the world's creation. Over the course of centuries the inexorable enemy has reduced it to ruin, but now with your mercy and bountiful grace you have caused it to bloom even more. Adorn our churches, monasteries, schools, and charitable organizations with progress and holiness, and protect them from the enemies. Bless all that is good there, especially the first of names, the name ARMENIA.
(From the Prayer of Thanksgiving for the Republic of Armenia)
Memorial Day Weekend

St. Sarkis Saturday School Year End hantes
On Sunday, May 19th the St. Sarkis Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School held their annual year end hantes. The Main Hall was filled with loved ones awaiting the student's performances and the children did not disappoint them. From nursery through our 7th graders and our Post Graduates the students worked hard to learn their poems and songs.
The hantes started with our nursery, pre-k and kindergarten classes singing and reciting their poems. At the end of their performance our pastor, Der Nareg and Principal, Mrs. Nairy Zohrabian, presented the Kindergarten students their moving up diplomas. The second portion of the hantes was performed by our 1st through 7th grade and our Post Graduate classes. The program ended with a special dance performance by many of our students.

At the end of the program Der. Nareg Terterian, Mrs. Nairy Zohrabian, Mrs. Mary Arslanian and Dr. Aram Cazazian presented our graduating 7th graders, Eddy Hazarian, Andre Tavitian, Nayira Kabarajian with their diplomas and wished them good luck with their future endeavors. Mr. Michael Gostanian took a stand on behalf of the board of trustees chairman Mr. Harry Seoylemezian congratulating Der Nareg, the school principal and the staff for their amazing job. Der. Nareg expressed his gratitude to the staff and the PTA for their hard work and dedication.

Another fun filled year of learning the Armenian language, history, culture, song and religion concluded as our dedicated PTA served delicious desserts.
As it was mentioned at the hantes, a few of our students took part in the ARS of the Eastern USA composition contest. Out of six different schools one of our students, Eddie Hazarian was chosen as the first prize winner for the contest. We congratulate Eddie, for job well done!

The 3rd Annual Panel Discussion on Mental Health
Dear Parishioners:

On Sunday, June 2, after church services, St. Sarkis will host the 3rd Annual "Ways To Wellness: A Panel Discussion on Mental Health." This program on mental health has been a huge success each year.

The purpose of the discussion is to destigmatize mental health and illness and help our parishioners learn more about the importance of mental health.

Our panel discussion will again feature esteemed mental health practitioners with whom you are familiar: Yeraz Markarian, PhD a licensed clinical psychologist, Executive Director of Healthy Mind NY, where she provides individual and group therapy, family counseling and parenting skills, and Assistant Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; Hagop Gorgissian, MD an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, St. George University who also has a private practice in Queens; and Carlo Bayrakdarian, MD a geriatric psychiatrist who has a private practice throughout Westchester and in New York City and was a Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry at the Cornell University Medical Center.

We want to make sure the lecture meets the needs of our parishioners. To that end, if there is a topic you want covered, you can email [email protected]. All requests will be kept confidential.

Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you and to seeing you at the program on June 2.

Sincerely,
Fr. Nareg Terterian

ACTS OF THE APOSTLES (20.17-38)
From Miletus, Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders of the church. When they arrived, he said to them: "You know how I lived the whole time I was with you, from the first day I came into the province of Asia. I served the Lord with great humility and with tears, although I was severely tested by the plots of the Jews. You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house. I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus.
"And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me-the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace.
"Now I know that none of you among whom I have gone about preaching the kingdom will ever see me again. Therefore, I declare to you today that I am innocent of the blood of all men. For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God. Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.
"Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. I have not coveted anyone's silver or gold or clothing. You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions. In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' "

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (9.39-10.10)
Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind."
Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, "What? Are we blind too?"
Jesus said, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.
"I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep. The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice." Jesus used this figure of speech, but they did not understand what he was telling them.
Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
