Sermon:  "The Uprising of Christianity:
Stories of Discipleship"

Scripture : Luke 10:1-11 & 17

This Sunday
This Sunday we have what is called in baseball, a split squad game. In this case it's a two- location worship service. One group of us will be worshiping  at Lazy F as the Lazy F Mini Mission Trip begins to wind down.   They will be worshiping  in the outdoor chapel overlooking the Manastash Creek. The other group will be worshiping  at Aldersgate. Both services will be taking place at approximately the same time (10:00am). Jen and Roger, and other members of the Praise Band will be leading worship at Lazy F. Brad will be leading worship at Aldersgate. The worship at Aldersgate will be a little more informal, and will focus on discipleship; one of those kind of buzz words in Christianity.
In some ways, "discipleship" is something like the old idea of an apprenticeship. It focuses on helping those seeking to learn "the trade." It is all about creating opportunities to pick up the skills needed and move toward mastery. In our case, the trade is Christianity. Our master teacher is Jesus, and yet there are other teachers we can readily identify along the way. The question is, what is the trade we're seeking to learn? How does it work? How do we know when we've mastered it? Can we master it? And then once mastered, what do we do with it? There is a simple answer to that last question. We live it and pass it on, and there-in lies the uprising. To explore what I mean, take a look at the gospel of Luke, chapter 10 and verses 1 - 11.
PASTOR'S BLOG
Pastor's Blog
Rev. Laura Baumgartner

This week at Common Table, Jim Phillips, chair of the church's Finance committee, explained the extent of our budget shortfalls. For our current fiscal year, we anticipate that our expenses will exceed our income by approximately $22,000. For the coming six month period from July 1-December 31, 2019, we foresee a larger deficit. To make ends meet, we have borrowed from our savings and we intend to reverse that trend, over time building the savings back up. Therefore, several actions are being taken by the leaders and staff of the church.
  1. There is currently a budget freeze on all non-essential spending until July 1.
  2. The Core Leaders Team (CLT) will begin more conservative budgeting practices. These include the ways that we estimate pledged and designated giving, and the ways that we plan for expanding programs.
  3. The CLT and Treasurer will begin a new process for approving withdrawals from savings that seek to make sure that they are more transparent and clear to all leaders.
  4. Joe Lee has been appointed as chair of a new task force to make recommendations about staffing in the six month period from July 1-December 31, 2019 and beyond. Since staff is our largest expense, we need to address how we use our resources to support the work of the staff. He is seeking members for the task force who are willing to work with him.
  5. CLT and Finance Committee will also re-evaluate our income streams and set policies that are consistent with our church mission to make best use of the property and resources that house our ministries.
  6. In addition, the decision has been made that we will no longer have an Associate Pastor. Pastor Laura is in the process of seeking a new appointment at another church. The District Superintendent and Bishop are working with her and with us to make the transition as smooth as possible. Given this reality, there are a few things that Pastor Laura wants to address, below.
From Pastor Laura:
I know that the news about our budget is a shock. Put on top of that shock, my departure for another appointment is also difficult. At this point, I want to address some of that shock and difficulty.

MINISTRY NEWS
Calling All Graduates!
Graduation Sunday is June 9th.  We will be celebrating all of our high school and college graduates in both services. As part of this celebration, there will be a place on June 2nd and June 9th where you can leave a note of encouragement, appreciation or advice to each of our high school graduates.  If you have a graduate in your family and haven't already turned in a picture and bio to  Jen Hoerber   please do so by  May 26.

PLEDGE CARDS ARE DUE NOW
Thank you for your faithfulness sustaining our Church with gifts of your time, talents and treasure! It's time to count up the treasure. If you've submitted your pledge, thank you! If not, please turn it in soon so that we can tailor our program and staff planning for the coming year. As you learned at the Common Table, we are pressing to make up a budget shortage by asking each member of the church for a 13th month giving before June 30.

In the upcoming budget we are seeking a 14% increase. We can achieve this by increasing the number of pledging units and by faithful pledgers increasing their giving amount. We hope to have 100% participation by all those who call Aldersgate their church home so that we can fully fund all our ministries and grow in service to others. Please click  here for the Pledge Card and either mail or bring to church by  this Sunday so we can begin planning for the upcoming fiscal year. Let us each give out of abundance.

Summer Worship Schedule for 2019
This summer, our Worship Team has decided to hold one worship service each Sunday at 10:00am from July 7 through September 1. We will worship together as one body at one time for all of July and August and on Labor Day weekend. We will move back to two services on September 8. The exact format of the services is not yet known. Some weeks may feel more contemporary and some may feel more traditional, but every week will be an opportunity to praise God together with joy and thanksgiving. We hope you will be here whenever it's possible with your summer activity schedule.

This year from June 24 - June 28 we will be feeding about 40 men. Volunteers will be organized into teams based on the day you select. The teams select the menu, decide what each person will provide for the meal and which two people will serve. Sign up on the signup sheets on the table in the narthex. We also need someone to coordinate this program as Dave Maybee is incapacitated. For more information call Dave at 425-747-3668

People Who Mourn
To the Friends and Family of Charles Roger Nicklett, from his brother Gary:
As I am sure all of you have heard by now, our friend and brother, Chuck (Rog),died on April 6.  For any of you who wish to attend, we are having a small memorial service for him on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 10:00am at Barton Funeral Services, located at 11630 Slater Ave. NE Suite 1A, Kirkland, WA 98034. Naturally, everyone is welcome, however, please do not feel as though any of you are expected to appear at either the memorial service or the placing of cremains in the columbarium at Kirkland Cemetery following the service.  We all welcome any friends, relatives, neighbors, or former neighbors, or fellow church worshipers who wish to say goodbye with us to our brother, either at the memorial service or at the cemetery.  We will not be having a formal gathering after the cemetery, although if any of you wish to get together individually, that is up to you.  Thanks to the kind support many of you have offered in terms of cards and well-wishes in this difficult time.
     Warmest regards, Gary and Deb
