  LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Early Voting Starts Today!

We take our role as the voice of business very seriously, which includes keeping you, our members, informed about where the candidates running for elected office stand on issues affecting the business community and Howard County as a whole.

Early voting starts today, June 14th, and will continue through June 21st, ahead of election day on June 26th. You can find more information about the primary elections here.

In order to help you make informed decisions on the candidates running for office, we sent questionnaires to anyone who is officially running for Howard County Executive, County Council, the General Assembly and the Board of Education. The questionnaires cover a range of issues affecting Howard County's businesses and residents. You can read responses from each of the candidates who returned the questionnaires using the links below.
Legislative Affairs Committee Meeting

At this week's monthly Legislative Affairs Committee meeting, the committee was joined by representatives from Kimco. Greg Reed, Kimco's Vice President of Development, walked the committee through a look at some of the properties the company has already redeveloped in Howard County, including the Wilde Lake Village Center. Reed also spoke about the long and complicated process of village center redevelopment, including the current wait on a new Zoning Board to take up the issue of the Hickory Ridge Village Center in 2019.

  HISTORIC ELLICOTT CITY FLOOD UPDATE
Historic Ellicott City Businesses and Residents in Need of Volunteer Contractors

We are continuing to work with our members and community partners to do what we can to aid the relief efforts for the people and businesses of Historic Ellicott City.
  • The Ellicott City Partnership is accepting donations to support relief and recovery efforts. The ECP is working to asses the situation and begin to get assistance where it is most needed.
  • The Community Foundation of Howard County has established the HoCo Relief Fund to help address needs in the aftermath of the May 27, 2018 Flash Flood. The Relief Fund is currently providing assistance to community members impacted by the flood.
  • The Horizon Foundation is making two grants to aid in recovery efforts and ensure the availability of mental health services.
  • If you are a business with spare office, storage or retail space that a dislocated business could use, please email [email protected] with the location, amount of space available and how long it will be available.
  • Lastly, the Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation is encouraging people whose real property has been damaged by the flooding to contact them as they may qualify to have their property assessments reduced. You can find more information at SDAT's website here.
