Each year at this time, we are called by Archbishop Sartain to participate in the Annual Catholic Appeal.
The ACA gives St. John Parish an opportunity to support the work of the wider church in Western Washington - the education of seminarians, support of retired priests and women religious, the work of Catholic Community Services, multicultural ministries, and so much more.
Through this one gift, each of us and all of us embrace those whom the rest of the world so often overlooks. This year, the St. John Parish assessment for the ACA is
$108,252.
At this time we have received pledges of
$31,035
leaving us with $77,217 still to collect. While it is important to note that if we do not raise this amount through the ACA campaign we must make up the difference through our ordinary income, our hope is that this community will show itself ready to help both the local and the larger Church. Our witness, so important, to Catholics throughout this region, relies upon each person's willingness to act as part of this community.
Your participation, regardless of the amount, will make a difference - to you, to us, and to those who benefit from your generosity.

Golden Fellowship Luncheon

Women's Shelter Thank You!
Together, we have transported, fed and hosted so many women this year. Thank you so much to all of you who give your time and resources to members of our community who are in need. It's good for our hearts and good for our society.

A small, but mighty crew made great progress on our gardening plan this weekend, transplanting plants to the front of the church and preparing the beds for mulch along the North walkway. We will spread mulch on June 1st, which will keep the weeds down until fall when we will be putting in plants to fill in the beds. Thank you to
Josh Stutzman, Mark Gerling and Ryan Roach who prepped the area for us,
Dani D'Amelio, Susan Turner, Sara Norman and Sheila Marty for the planning work and
Sara and DJ Norman, Steven d'Amelio, Jim Scanlon, Diana Grusczynski, and Laura and Sheila Marty for their physical labors. Also, a huge shout out to the crew from Holy Names (
Grace W., Addy T., Sadie B., and Yumi P-D) who came the weekend before and filled up 12 buckets with weeds from around the front steps of the church.
We appreciate all the hard work from our awesome community!

N Seattle Catholic Youth will not be meeting this week due to Memorial Day Weekend. We hope you have a wonderful and restful long weekend.
Our last Sunday Gathering/Discipleship Group of the school year will be next Sunday, June 2. Middle School meets at 5:00 pm and High School at 7:00 pm, both at St. Catherine Parish.

Summer BBQ for St John Parish and School!
Please join us for School's Out, Grills' Out BBQ on Saturday,
June 15 from 6-9pm in the school's blacktop. Ethan Stowell, one of our Kindergarten parents, and Ethan Stowell Restaurants will be catering this event alongside our very own in house chef, Michael Strimban. We will have a mixed grill for adults, hot dogs for kids, salads, dessert, and select adult beverages will served. Please join the fun! Tickets are $10 per child, $25 per adult and $60 per family.

Secure your spot- Register Now for Fall Soccer and Cross Country
Do not delay and get on top of your future to do list by registering for fall XC and Soccer before summer starts. Fall sports fees will be refunded without any question for any reason any time before September 12th so there is no risk! Soccer registration will guarantee a player's spot if registration is complete by August 1st, but team availability after August 1st will be based on grade availability.
Registration is open to all SCHOOL and PARISH families.

Laudato Si in Action
In Chapter One of Laudato Si, Pope Francis calls us to recognize that the earth and the climate are a common good that we must care for:
The climate is a common good, belonging to all and meant for all. At the global level, it is a complex system linked to many of the essential conditions for human life. A very solid scientific consensus indicates that we are presently witnessing a disturbing warming of the climatic system...Humanity is called to recognize the need for changes of lifestyle, production and consumption, in order to combat this warming or at least the human causes which produce or aggravate it.
It is up to each of us to change our lifestyles, and reduce both production and consumption. Will it be a challenge? Absolutely, but don't we want to preserve this beautiful planet for our children and grandchildren?

My daughter, Laura, recently read C. S. Lewis'
The Screwtape Letters, and encouraged me to read it so we could discuss it over coffee. That's an offer I'll never pass up. I found this prayer nugget in #27, and have to admit that I've had exactly this thought. Here, the demon Screwtape is instructing a more junior demon named Wormwood:
But since your patient has contracted the terrible habit of obedience, he will probably continue such 'crude' prayers whatever you do. But you can worry him with the haunting suspicion that the practice is absurd and can have no objective result. Don't forget to use the 'heads I win, tails you lose' argument. If the thing he prays for doesn't happen, then that is one more proof that petitionary prayers don't work; if it does happen, he will, of course, be able to see some of the physical causes which led up to it, and 'therefore it would have happened anyway', and thus a granted prayer becomes just as good a proof as a denied one that prayers are ineffective.
