Why did you decide to run for public office?

I've had an opportunity to ask this question often when speaking with a number of our elected officials. The answers vary, but there is a common theme: They could accept things as they are, complain about it, or get involved!

That's right....they were not happy about something or other.

Simply running for office is an arduous task and not for the faint of heart. I respect those who are willing to put their private lives on public display. Once elected, a public official is always on duty. Forget about the 9:00 to 5:00 schedule. Aside from the regular duties of serving on committees and participating in meetings, everyone is vying for their time and attention. It is a public office after all and the public doesn't hold office hours.

On the other hand, electing someone to office who truly understands the role of a public servant leader can be beneficial for the community. Government is filled with processes. There is plenty of red tape even at the city level. And there should be. Otherwise, we would not have a solid foundation with adequate safeguards in which to sustain and grow our community. Get a hundred people together and you will get a hundred different opinions. Thus the balancing act of listening to the voice of the public, but making educated decisions based on the parameters of the jurisdiction.

The Escondido Chamber of Commerce is your voice for business. By engaging with our elected officials, whether over coffee or in a committee meeting, the business community's concerns are heard.

Sincerely,

Rorie Johnston
