Reshaping our Diocese to Increase Connections
by Rosemary Hagan, D. Min., North Region Chair

If you are new to being an Episcopalian it might come as a surprise that our parish, Grace Church, does not "stand alone". We are a member parish in a larger geographical region called a Diocese. We are also part of the greater Episcopal Church in this country, and beyond that we are members of the world-wide Anglican Communion. But let's move back closer to home to our own Diocese, the Diocese of Western Michigan. The Cathedral for our Diocese, or in a different parlance, the corporate office, is seated in Kalamazoo. This is where our Bishop and the diocesan staff have their offices. Having an organization's corporate office located far from a satellite office can lead to a sense of isolation or disconnect, at both ends of the geographical stretch. Bishop Whittemore Sunday May 6, 2018
Make a special offering to support this important work!

The Bishop Whittemore Foundation was established in 1952 by The Right Rev'd Lewis Bliss Whittemore and other concerned and dedicated Christians for the purpose of making grants and loans to parishes and organizations affiliated with the Diocese of Western Michigan, including the Diocese itself in its programmatic needs. The Foundation is especially interested in supporting those Christians who have creative and hopeful visions for the future of the Church, the nature of its ministry, and its prophetic and pastoral role within our society. Financial assistance in the form of grants has been provided to: help parishe s become barrier free; contribute to the Diocesan Priest-in-Formation Program, which assists newly ordained persons as they begin their ministries; support parishes in the purchase of new furnaces and the repair of their stained glass windows and roofs; support for the annual clergy conference and summer youth camp. In 2016, the Foundation granted $85,400 (2017 figures not available at press time).

Checks may be made out to the Whittemore Foundation and sent to P.O. Box 6724, Grand Rapids, MI 49516. Please do not place your check in the offering plate.

"The great issues facing the world today are fundamentally spiritual issues. They can only be solved when the heart is touched by the love of God and life interpreted in terms of Jesus Christ. The Episcopal Church must do her part in bringing the Gospel in power to thousands of the un-churched people in Western Michigan."
        - The Rt. Rev. Lewis B. Whittemore III Western Michigan 1937-1953.

Turn in your Oleson's receipts to benefit the Grace Food Pantry!

Oleson's Community Share Program

Here's how it works:
  1. You shop at Oleson's for groceries (liquor sales do not qualify for points)
  2. Turn in your receipts to the church.  Look for the envelope on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall, and place your receipts inside it.
  3. We submit receipts back to Oleson's
  4. We are granted cash rewards for the food pantry ($1 spent on groceries = 1 cent in Community Share points)

For every $5000 in receipts we submit, we receive $50 in cash for our food pantry.  Every little bit helps!

Thank you for participating!
