U.S. House Committee Approves Increased Arts Funding
|
The U.S House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee strongly rejected President Trump's budget request to eliminate both the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) by appropriating $167.5 million in funding for fiscal year (FY) 2020. This is an increase for both agencies of $12.5 million over the FY 2019 funding level of $155 million. The full U.S. House Appropriations Committee will consider this bill in the coming weeks and action on the House floor will take place sometime in June. This is the third year in a row that President Trump has proposed a termination of both the NEA and the NEH in his budget proposal to the U.S. Congress. The past two years, Congress has rejected this request and moderately increased funding for the cultural agencies. More info

Philharmonic Society of OC Appoints New Music Director & Conductor for OC Youth Symphony
|
|
Following an international search, the
Philharmonic Society of Orange County has appointed Johannes Müller Stosch as the new Music Director and Conductor for the Orange County Youth Symphony, effective with the 2019-20 season, which also marks the youth symphony's milestone 50th anniversary. Müller Stosch succeeds Daniel Alfred Wachs, who served as OCYS' Music Director and Conductor for 10 years. Currently, Johannes Müller Stosch serves as Director of Orchestral Activities at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach, as well as Music Director and Conductor of Holland Symphony Orchestra in Michigan. He has also held conducting positions with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Brockport Symphony in New York, Tri State Players in Ohio, and served repeatedly on the conducting and coaching staff at the Opera Theatre Festival in Lucca, Italy.
Müller Stosch keeps an active guest-conducting schedule both internationally and nationally and has also appeared as a frequent performer on organ and harpsichord with the Pacific Symphony. Maestro Müller Stosch received his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Conducting from the Eastman School of Music.

4 OC Organizations Win NEA Funds
in Second Round of 2019 Grants

The National Endowment for the Arts has announced its second round of of FY2019 Art Works funding, with four Orange County organizations receiving funding:
Arts Orange County - $25,000, to support the Día del Niño festival.
California State University Fullerton - $10,000, to support the commission and premiere of a new work by composer Pamela Madsen during the CSUF New Music Festival.
KCETlink (now Public Media Group of Southern California, following merger with KOCE PBS SoCal) - $25,000, to support production costs for as many as three episodes of Artbound, an arts journalism and television series highlighting California artists.
Laguna Playhouse - $10,000, to support the youth education and outreach program TheatreReach: Bringing Books to Life.
