T his is the “goodbye” letter that a mother wrote to the addiction that almost destroyed her son:

Before I was even born, you robbed me of my father’s parents and his only sister; my grandparents; and my aunt. I never had the chance to know them because of you, and a person who enjoyed way too much of your company.

You robbed me of family members during my childhood. But I never thought you’d be so involved in my adult life!

Then you were introduced to my son. Not by his father and I – but that isn’t really the point.

The point is that you made him think you were there for him. You made him think that you understood him. You made him believe that you and you alone relieved his stress, comforted him, and gave him back his self-worth.

Because you distort reality. The reality is that you were never his friend, because friends don’t lie or hurt or destroy. Friends don’t kill. I’ve seen you do almost all of that to our son, repeatedly, with each time worse than the last.

Now I say goodbye to you, as I see my son standing strongly in his own truth.

I say goodbye to you, as my son has “owned” his addiction to you.

I say goodbye to you, and not to my son.

We are recovering together, and individually. Because we have all chosen, individually, to say goodbye to you. We’ve seen you for what you really are – a destroyer.

I am so proud to say that my son is finding his self-worth.

Day by day, he is walking in truth. One day at a time, with us by his side -- smiling again.

At The Morton Center, we often receive letters like this - but in spite of all the letters we receive, there really are no words for this kind of joy. It can't be expressed on paper- just lived out.
