Working to ensure that all caregivers receive the respite and support they need.

Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads the nation's observance of Older American's Month. The 2018 theme is Engage at Every Age . This theme emphasizes that no one is too old (or young) to take part in activities that can enrich physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It also celebrates the many ways in which older adults make a difference in communities. Visit the Official OAM Website

Male Caregivers: Growing in Number and in Needs

The Rapid Rise of the Make Caregivers

Caregiver Profile: The Male Caregiver - AARP public Policy Institute

This profile summarizes data from the Caregiving in the U.S. 2015 research study, jointly conducted with the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP.1 While the data presented below provide aggregate information about the average caregiver, it should be noted that the face of caregiving is changing. Family caregivers come in all variations and circumstances-from the grandson helping his grandmother out by cutting the grass and driving her to the store a couple hours a week; to the mother helping her adult son 10 hours a week with various activities due to his post-traumatic stress disorder; to the adult daughter caring for her mother with Alzheimer's; to the wife caring for her husband around the clock to deal with his stroke, diabetes, and wound care. The National Group Respite Program

Since 1989, the Brookdale National Group Respite Program has awarded seed grants to organizations to develop and implement social model group respite programs. These day programs have served thousands of elders with Alzheimer's disease or related dementia and their family caregivers. In addition to group respite, the development of programs for people with Early Memory Loss (EML) is also supported through this grant initiative.
The goals of the program are:
  • to offer opportunities for persons with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia to engage in a program of meaningful social and recreational activities in a secure and supportive setting in order to maximize their cognitive and social abilities; and
  • to provide relief and support to family members and other primary caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia.
A 2018 Request for Proposals (RFP) is Now Available for Agencies Interested in Creating Group Respite or Early Memory Loss Program for Elders with Dementia.

Request t0 Complete Long Term Care Planning Council Survey

from the New  York State Office for the Aging

In Governor Cuomo's 2018 State of the State, he announced the launch of a Long Term Care Planning C0uncil to prepare for emerging needs of New York State's growing aging population. The charge of the Council is to examine New York's long term care system. Specifically, the Council will:

  • Analyze, Evaluate, and identify the existing service gaps in New York's long term care system;
  • Determine the most cost-effective evidenced-based interventions; and
  • Prepare a strategic plan to meet the emerging needs of New York's aging population over the next decade.

For the purpose of this Council, the "long term care system" should be broadly interpreted to include a variety of services and supports that help meet both the medical and non-medical needs of individuals with a chronic illness, disability, or functional need, and includes services and supports for caregivers.

The New York State Office for the Aging and the NYS Department of Health have created a general survey to hear directly from you, your clients/customers, stakeholder groups and coalition partners on what you are experiencing at the community level in terms of supporting the autonomy and independence of older New Yorkers and their caregivers. We are interested in learning directly form you not only what works well and should be expanded, but what gaps exist and what you propose are ways to fill those gaps. Specifically, we are looking for as wide a distribution of this survey as possible, so feel free to pass it on, as the goal is to get broad representation of older adults themselves and caregivers from across the state.

NYSOFA is asking that you take the following two actions:

  1. Please complete this survey on line and submit by June 18, 2018; and
  2. Distribute the general survey to any stake holders you know, including older adults, caregivers, community-based organizations and coalition partners that you believe would offer substance to this data gathering phase.  Link to the survey

In the late 19th century, Buffalo was the first city to implement widespread streetlights, earning it the nickname, "The City of Light." During this time Buffalo was a hub of innovation, using natural power to bring light and growth to the city. This conference will provide a space to harness the power of the network to explore and formulate strategy to shine a light on the respite needs of 43 million caregivers.  Conference Website
