Each spring the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science celebrates the achievements of its future doctors, dentists, pharmacists, veterinarians, and physician assistants with the annual Future Doctors Reception. Congratulations to the future doctors who began their journey here at FAU! Science Dean and Professor, Ata Sarajedini, Ph.D., interviews Kate Detwiler, Ph.D., an Associate Professor and Primatologist. Detwiler studies the hybridization between different species of monkeys in Gombe Nartional Park in western Tanzania, Africa and other sites in the Congo Basin.

Dr. Jeanette Wyneken is beginning to close the knowledge gaps in the mysterious lives of young leatherback sea turtles. Her research at the FAU Marine Lab seeks to better understand where baby leatherbacks go during the years between departing their nests and returning to shore, and what that behavior can tell us about the overall health of the ocean.

Alumna Spotlight: Sarah Price
|
Spring 2019 graduate of the
Professional Science Master of Medical Physics (PSMMP) program, Sarah Price, will soon begin a clinical-focused residency as a medical physicist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The residency involves eight rotations, which includes hands-on and practical training in areas such as: providing patients radiation education, developing treatment plans, and providing quality assurance for patient treatments.
At FAU, Sarah worked with thesis advisor Dr. Silvia Pella and mentor Mr. Zoubir Ouhib. Her thesis focused on a comparison between brachytherapy and external beam treatments for breast cancer.

Meet the "Science Mermaid"
|
|
Chelsea Bennice, 33, could be described as a real life “science mermaid.” While spending more than 400 hours underwater studying octopus behavior as part of her Ph.D. research, she learned how two octopus species utilize different resources to allow coexistence, something that had previously never been studied.

Young CryptograpHERS Cybersecurity Camp
|
Edoardo Persichetti, Ph.D., and team are launching the Young CryptograpHERS Cybersecurity Summer Camp for High School Girls: July 29-August 2, 2019. The camp will focus on Post-Quantum Cryptography, the area of math that is in charge of protecting our information in the era of quantum technology. The program includes lectures and activities by FAU faculty, alumni and speakers from industry and government.

Elementary Science Olympiad
Elementary school students from across south Florida came to Florida Atlantic University to compete in the
Science Olympiad. They competed in numerous events, ranging from Chew The Fat, Water Bottle Rockets, Deep Blue Sea, Straw Egg Drops, Towers, and many more.

Mini Math Day
The Department of Mathematical Sciences hosted approximately 100 fourth grade students from Belvedere Elementary in West Palm Beach on May 17, 2019, for our
Twelfth Annual Mini-Math Day. The program began with a welcome and a short quiz (our individual contest) followed by Dr. Tomas Schonbek's team contest.

Robert Stackman Named Dean of Graduate College
Robert W. Stackman Jr., Ph.D., Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and member of the FAU Brain Institute, has been appointed as the next dean of the Graduate College. Stackman is currently a Professor in the Department of Psychology and Associate Dean of Graduate Studies in the College of Science, and has previously served as the Interim Chair of the Department of Psychology.
