NGCP Webinar Science Action Club: Building STEM Identities through Citizen Science

will showcase
Science Action Club
(SAC) in this NGCP national webinar. SAC is a STEM program for middle school youth in out-of-school time. Through hands-on games and projects, youth investigate their local environment and use citizen science to document discoveries, share data, and design strategies to protect our planet. NGCP partners with the California Academy of Sciences to reach youth around the
nation with this high-quality citizen science experience. Participants will hear from the SAC
team as well as trainers and activity leaders who have participated in the project and will learn how to become involved with Science Action Club.

SciGirls Training at BOOST Conference
Palm Springs, CA; May 4, 2018
Led by PBS SoCal, this workshop models how to lead inquiry-based STEM instruction with a commitment to gender equity. Educators attending SciGirls Trainings learn the latest research about exciting and engaging girls (and boys) in STEM; experience hands-on STEM activities; and gain access to free materials for hands-on, video-enhanced activities that put a creative twist on teaching STEM. SciGirls Connect Training
Albany, NY; May 10, 2018
Attendees will learn ways SciGirls can be used to encourage STEM-based learning for all students, not just girls. SciGirls is an Emmy award-winning PBS Kids television series and website dedicated to changing the way millions of girls think about STEM. Local educators are invited to participate in this hands-on, minds-on professional development training and will have the opportunity to practice proven strategies for engaging girls in STEM while building a device to measure wind, speed, and lighting up a room with dough creatures. Leap Into Science Balance Training
Spokane, WA; May 11, 2018
Spokane County Library District is pleased to offer this free training. Leap into Science is a nationwide program from The Franklin Institute Science Museum that integrates open-ended science activities with children's books, designed for children ages 3-10 and their families. These activities are designed for community settings, like libraries, museums, and out-of-school time programs. Register.

Simone Athayde |
Meet Simone Athayde, an environmental anthropologist and a Core Faculty in the Tropical Conservation and Development Program, in the Center for Latin American Studies, University of Florida. She is also a co-leader of the Amazon Dams Network, a women-led international network aimed at developing inter- and trans-disciplinary research on hydroelectric dam implementation in the Amazon. Her research interests include biodiversity conservation, sustainability, gender, race and cultural minorities' studies, interdisciplinary research, integrative science, indigenous knowledge systems, ethnoecology, and participatory research and management of socio-ecological systems. The Connectory Spotlight highlights programs and opportunities in
The Connectory. This free online collaboration tool for STEM program providers helps them find partners based on interests, as well as showcase STEM opportunities to families.
Ecology Project International (EPI) is a non-profit dedicated to developing place-based, ecological education partnerships between local experts and students to address critical conservation issues. This summer they are offering:
These programs includes 25+ hours of coursework and instruction covering conservation biology, wildlands management, and the scientific process, plus 6+ hours of field research.
Stunning Vistas: The landscape's singular beauty, abundance of wildlife, and fascinating thermal features combine to make this high-altitude plateau a unique and extraordinary ecosystem.
Field Work: Instructors will guide students through the surroundings and introduce the forces that shape it. Students will gain an understanding of the conservation issues facing the region and knowledge about one of the park's most charismatic ungulates-bison.
Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience: Students will spend time in and around Yellowstone National Park, where park service scientists and conservation staff will work with them on habitat restoration and bison grazing projects.

 Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)

GAAD occurs each year to get people talking, thinking, and learning about digital (web, software, mobile, etc.) access/inclusion and people with different disabilities. GAAD encourage designers, developers, usability professionals, and the general public to take an hour to experience first-hand the impact of digital accessibility (or lack thereof). Participate.
