Dear friends,
We were honored to partner last week with CAIR-Washington State (Council on American Islamic Relations) to offer a Bystander Intervention Training at our center in Lake City. There has been a terrible increase in the amount of hate crime and harassment in this country over the last few years, and acts of open hostility towards others are unfortunately becoming far too common.
About 50 staff, volunteers, and community members gathered together to learn and practice skills to be an effective ally to anyone experiencing hateful, demeaning, or threatening speech or actions. Bystander Intervention is based on the principles of non-violence and the idea that s
tanding up in solidarity when anybody in our community is targeted makes a difference.
A few take-aways on how to be a "bystander who intervenes:"
- Don't assume someone else will do something.
- Work to de-escalate and distract.
- Point out the situation to people around you.Tell them you're going to support the targeted person, and ask if they'd like to help.
- Don't engage with the attacker in any way. Ignore them and focus entirely on the person being attacked.
- Reach out to the targeted person, introduce yourself, and ask if they want help. Offer possible solutions and make sure to respect their wishes.

Kimguech Chheang
This month we are featuring Kimguech, who has been studying at Literacy Source for over a year. Originally from Cambodia, Kim lived in Texas for 10 years before moving to Seattle. She says she likes most things about Seattle, except for the cold weather!
Kim studies in our Citizenship class, practices computer skills in our Learning Lab, meets with a tutor, and has a cleaning job at Literacy Source - on Mondays and Wednesdays she is here for 8 hours! Between classes, you can find her in the kitchen, practicing her typing skills on a laptop. When she first started in the computer class, she didn't know how to open the internet on her laptop. Now, after several months of hard work, Kim can independently open online tutorials, sign in to her Google account, and send emails. Kim also takes an ESOL class at South Seattle Community College and is looking for another part-time job. In her little amount of free time, Kim enjoys watching sports on TV - even though she has only been in Seattle for a year and a half, she roots for the Seahawks!
We love seeing Kim's radiant smile around the center and applaud her dedication and hard work!

Joani Harr
This month we are pleased to introduce Joani Harr, a Literacy Source math teacher and tutor who has been with us since June 2017. Joani is a huge asset to our math program, and draws on her 20 years of experience as a math teacher to deeply connect with our students while making math fun and tangible. She has high expectations of the students! Joani has been very flexible in responding to our needs by switching from tutor to class teacher as needed, and we really appreciate all her work and commitment.

Lake City Talk Time students learn how to relax with stress ball exercises
|
Lake City Talk Time
Literacy Source partners with Sound Generations and Sea Mar Community Health Centers to offer Spanish-speaking seniors a weekly opportunity to practice English and learn new skills. Talk Time is part of Sea Mar's Latino Senior Program. Every Wednesday, from 11 am to 12 pm at the Lake City Community Center, program participants are introduced to a discussion topic by Literacy Source volunteers. This quickly turns into a lively hour of laughter and sharing in an atmosphere more like a family reunion than a class. This quarter Talk Time topics have included body & health, holidays, and clothing. New vocabulary is learned through pictures, activities such as guided meditation and stress ball exercises for relaxation, and games such as Bingo and Go Fish. Mistakes are part of the learning and fun, and there is no shortage of hugs - before and after class. Monthly birthday celebrations - including homemade food, singing and dancing (and sometimes funny hats!) - make this gathering of friends even more special. Know Your Rights Workshop
Literacy Source will host a free Know Your Rights workshop (facilitated by One America) for immigrants, refugees, and English language learners on Tuesday, June 19 from 6 to 8 pm, in Spanish and English. These interactive workshops will include what to do/say if approached by law enforcement or ICE and resources on how to make a family safety plan.

One-on-One Tutors
Daytime and T/Th evening tutors needed for ESOL, reading, writing, math, GED prep, and citizenship
2 x 1.5 hrs per week (6 month commitment, flexible times)
Office Assistants
Daytime front desk help needed. Good customer service skills and telephone manner required. Multilingual a definite plus.
1 x 3-4 hrs per week (6 month commitment, mornings or afternoons)
Childcare Provider
Weds. evenings, 6-8:30 pm
Student Assessment Proctors
2-5 hr shifts every 7-10 weeks, daytime and evenings
Sight Word and Phonics Testers
Evenings, 1-3 hours, 2x/term

AmeriCorps ESOL Citizenship Instructor
Literacy Source is hiring two AmeriCorps Members to work as part of our instructional team out of our Learning Center in the Lake City neighborhood in Seattle. The AmeriCorps positions are full-time for 10.5 months from September 1, 2018 to July 15, 2019. In addition to teaching small group ESOL and citizenship classes for adults, the AmeriCorps Members will provide ongoing support to students and to volunteer tutors.

Belle Peñaranda
Belle, our Communications and Data Manager, is leaving her position in mid-July. She joined the team in February 2014, and in the 4+ years since, has tackled her broad job responsibilities head on. Whether it's working with a student on testing, managing and analyzing our data to help with program improvements, supervising office volunteers and Work Study staff, or coordinating our external communications, Belle's many hats and many talents have been instrumental in creating a supportive learning environment and place of community at Literacy Source. Her ability to keep track of a thousand little details and keep us moving forward will be hard to replace! Belle is moving to Chicago this summer with her husband and dog, and looking forward to eventually buying a home with a backyard and living closer to family. We're excited for Belle as she and her family begin this new chapter, but will deeply miss her wit, wisdom, and good humor. Good luck Belle!
