Accidental drowning is the number one cause of death for children 1-4 years of age, and the number two cause of death for children 5-9. As District G does not currently have a public swimming pool, Council Member Travis personally created and organized this free swim lesson program and funded it with his Council District Service Fund.
With these free swim lessons, provided by the YMCA, kids learn what to do if they find themselves in the water unexpectedly-- from how to reach the water's surface if they submerge, to safely reaching a pool's edge or exiting any body of water:
Jump/Push/Turn/Grab: teaches children to push off the bottom of the pool as they are submerging to get back up to the surface while turning to grab the side of the pool
Swim/Float/Swim: teaches children to swim a short distance on their front, roll over onto their back to rest, and then roll on their front to continue swimming to safety
Residents of District G are encouraged to sign up for a session of free swim lessons. The lessons will be given at three west side swimming pools. Space is limited; first come, first served.
Registration is open to all Houston residents, but residents of District G will receive priority registration.
The program consists of five lessons for 30 minutes each, and will be given on the following dates and times:
