With Spring Come Celebrations and New Growth!

We all have been waiting for spring to actually begin, and while the weather has not been springlike, celebrations of the season have! Recently we celebrated the completion of our first public health mentor/mentee cohort (see article below). I was thrilled to attend the University of New Hampshire Masters in Public Health graduation and present graduates with NHPHA pins. And we presented our workforce development accomplishments at a networking session at the National Network of Public Health Institutes conference in Washington, DC. Our workforce development and Rising Stars initiatives have blossomed through the nurturing of our workforce development coordinator Emily Goulet, who has accomplished so much in just over one year with us.
It is so inspiring to see the rich academic posters presented by students at our annual meeting. We were humbled by the positive accolades and accomplishments of the first class of mentor and mentees and motivated by the enthusiasm of students attending the public health career panel at the annual meeting.
Congratulations to the 17th Master of Public graduating class of the University of New Hampshire! Kudos to Katherine Dzenis, Vanessa Grunkemeyer, and Emily Sorey-Backus for their excellent field study projects completed as part of their program.

A Successful Wrap-Up of NHPHA Public Health Mentoring Pilot Program

In early May, the
NHPHA Public Health Mentoring Program 2018-2019 concluded with a Celebration and Reflections Event. We celebrated each mentor-and-mentee pair with a certificate of completion and some much-deserved cake! We heard from participants about how the program was very rewarding for both mentors and mentees and, in some cases, life-changing. We discussed the possibility of hosting the program again, and we received great feedback from the participants. It was very rewarding for us to witness the testimonials to the program, as well as see firsthand the strong relationships between mentors and mentees.

New Futures Coordinates
Prevention Day of Action

 On May 7, New Futures coordinated the Prevention Day of Action! It was a day at the NH State House devoted to highlighting the incredible impact of substance misuse prevention on the state of NH. Dozens of prevention specialists from the regional public health networks and their prevention volunteers showed up in their black
Prevention in Action
t-shirts. Usually, prevention specialists work behind the scenes empowering communities to use evidence-based tools in the fight to reduce substance use. The Prevention Day of Action, however, was all about being visible and showing the faces of prevention. It was so empowering to see prevention professionals out in force advocating for more funding and stronger laws around access to substances. New Futures Policy Update
Speaking up about policy is an important part of promoting public health in New Hampshire. At New Futures, we advocate for evidence-based health and wellness policies in the Granite State and help partners and community members raise their voices in Concord.
In 2019, New Futures is advocating for three large campaign priorities: promoting home visiting and family support services, addressing our health care workforce shortage, and opposing marijuana commercialization.

SB 274: Home Visiting
Our Granite State children are dealing with traumatic experiences due to our substance misuse, mental health, and child protection crises, and as a result, these children can face social, emotional, physical, and mental health challenges that last into adulthood and leave our state at risk in the future. To combat these adverse childhood experiences, we need to support home visiting programs, Family Resource Centers, and effective child protection programs that help connect parents and children with services they need to be healthy and happy.
SB 274 addresses some of these issues by increasing access to home visiting services to families in need.
Thanks to the strong advocacy of home visitors, families, and more public health advocates, SB 274 passed both the House and Senate. The bill is awaiting the Governor's signature and is expected to soon be signed into law. To learn more and read the bill, click

Communications Committee
Still Needs You!
NHPHA is looking for members who are interested in marketing, communications and health promotion to join the Communication Committee. Please note you do not need experience to join. This is a great opportunity for any NHPHA member
but especially
for the student members who would like to be more involved in public health. The Communications Committee is responsible for keeping members informed in a timely manner of activities of NHPHA and supporting all of the communication activities between the Board, NHPHA membership and those interested in public health programs and initiatives. The Communications Committee utilizes various methods to keep NHPHA members current, including a member-to-member listserv, e-newsletter, Facebook, and website.

June 11-12 - Following on last year's success, NHPHA is participating again in
NH Gives. An initiative of the NH Center for Nonprofits, NH Gives is a powerful, statewide, 24-hour online fundraising event that is designed to build community, connect donors to local nonprofits, and generate excitement about the nonprofit sector. Visit our page starting June 10 to donate; if you'd like to volunteer to help us fundraise during our NH Gives pizza party, sign up here!
June 25 - "Using Systems Thinking to Address the Social Determinants of Health - Practicum." This day-long practicum is specifically designed for regional public health networks to learn to apply systems thinking to address social determinants of health in their communities. Networks are encouraged to attend in teams of at least 3 community members and focus on a social determinant that is a priority for them (transportation, food insecurity, homelessness, education, etc.).
Expert trainer
Julia Ross will share the basics of systems thinking to enable teams to consider the underlying causes that may be standing in the way of making traction on complex issues.
Teams will have time to work together to have these conversations with coaching from Julia.
