Those American Flags Adorning
Veterans' Gravesites
Didn't Just Grow There
Volunteers organized by Veterans’ groups and churches in Hunterdon County placed over 10,000 American flags on gravesites during the Memorial Day weekend, honoring those who have served the nation in the military and are now in their final resting place.

Freeholder Board Deputy Director John E. Lanza, the Board’s Veterans’ liaison, reported at the May 21st Freeholder meeting, “The County has long played a role in the Memorial Day commemoration by providing flags to Veterans’ groups for placement at the graves of Veterans who have passed.

While the public knows those American Flags they see across fields in cemeteries over the Memorial Day weekend didn’t just grow there, most are not aware of the tremendous volunteer effort by church groups, scouting organizations, and our Veterans, that makes the activity successful.”

Freeholders Hear Mayors’ Concerns
 On New NJDEP Restrictions
Mayors and other officials, both Democratic and Republican, told the Hunterdon County Freeholder Board, at the May 21 st meeting, that the New Jersey of Department of Environmental Protection’s (NJDEP) proposed environmental restrictions in Hunterdon County are too far reaching and must balance the environment with economic impacts.

Raritan Township Mayor Jeff Kuhl told the Board, “It is estimated that 20% of the properties in Raritan Township will be affected by the proposed DEP rules, including commercial, industrial and residential properties. Many of these properties will not be able to expand or be redeveloped and their overall value will drop.

The Tax Assessor estimates there could be $900 million in property tax appeals, as a result of the new rules.”

Photos and Construction Details Highlight DPW's Annual Report
Featuring before and after photos that establish graphically the extensive infrastructure work accomplished by Hunterdon County’s Department of Engineering and Public Works during 2018, the Department’s Annual Report also provides details on how County road and bridge dollars are expended.

Freeholder Shaun Van Doren, the Freeholder’s liaison for the Department, reported at the April 16 th Board meeting, “This annual report is well worth the public’s time to review for not only the photographs that demonstrably provide a true appreciation of the extent and value of the work, but also for the cost and construction detail.”

Recent approvals by the Hunterdon County Freeholder Board, acting in concert with the state’s Green Acres program, the Highlands Council, the Delaware and Raritan (D&R) Greenway Land Trust, and East Amwell Township, have added over 200 additional acres of preserved open space and parkland in Lebanon Township, Delaware Township, and East Amwell.

The Freeholder Board, at the May 21 st meeting, authorized a purchase contract for the 120-acre Denton Property in Lebanon, with the Highlands Council and Green Acres providing the full $976,000 cost.

Freeholder Board Director Suzanne Lagay pointed out, “The County and our partners not only protect from development these important acres that connect with existing preservation areas, but the action is also accomplished at no cost to the County open space trust fund for the purchase. That is a double win for Hunterdon County’s residents.”
