Call Committee in face-to-face interviews stage

The Call Committee (the group Emmanuel named at our January Congregational Meeting to research, interview candidates, and recommend our future pastor) is continuing to move forward. According to Chair Julie Pavri,
the committee has again narrowed the candidate pool and will be scheduling and preparing for face-to-face meetings during May. Please continue to keep all those involved in the call process in your prayers!

All hands on deck for community festival

Emmanuel's Spring Fling will be Saturday, June 2 from 1-4 p.m.
This is the new version of Fall Fun Fest. For those who recently joined the Emmanuel family, this is a project of the Outreach Ministry to provide an afternoon of FREE fun to the families in our surrounding neighborhood.
We already have some great things lined up – Heritage Park Zoo with critters, Cool Water Band, a jumping castle and the popular Cakewalk to name a few, but we need more, much more. That’s where you come in because it takes many hands to make it happen.
The Outreach Ministry had an initial planning session, but needs more creative planners, hospitable helpers and day-of-the-event smiling faces for this outreach to our surrounding community. Questions about this event? See Nancy Smith, or call her at 928-775-9742.

Prayer is connecting with God and all believers
|
|
Each time Jesus starts to pray He seems to be in all sorts of places and for different purposes.
We hear the Son of God praying to "Our Father"; this is the Holy Conversation that Jesus teaches us. We can pray this daily or even more often. We pray this prayer knowing that others are praying with us. We are connected through this prayer to the world-wide community of believers and God.
Jesus traveled to mountain places and garden areas away from others to pray. Later he prays for us as recorded in John's Gospel. He prays for protection for those who come to believe in Him through the "Disciples" (John 17:20-26).
Wow, that is US! We are in Jesus's thoughtful prayer for billions of believers.
Praying this prayer in Jesus' name connects us to the saints: past, present and future; most wonderfully it connects us to God's Son, our Savior, and Creator God through the Holy Spirit.
When we say "Amen," we say " I agree." Amen.
One more note: On May 19 at 5 p.m., we are having a special Saturday evening worship service, the
Vigil of Pentecost, and we will be honoring our first responders. All are welcome and encouraged to join us.

Confirmation students and mentors go deeper
into faith on weekend at Emmanuel Pines Camp
|
|
Our seven Confirmation students: Tawnya Worthington, Ruth Sena, Annie Martin, Caleb Johnson, Anikka Shifferli, Malea Green and Arizona Swinney gathered at Emmanuel Pines Camp for some adventure and spiritual direction the weekend of April 21-22!
The students focused on discovering their spiritual gifts, and presented a worship service based on that theme for their families on Sunday morning at camp. They spent some fun and athletic time on the campground low-ropes course and hiking down to the creek as well. Finally, the students worked on their Faith Statements, which they will share at the final Confirmation Class potluck May 9.
Our Confirmation mentors: Larry Gordon, Clarissa Reynolds, Sandie Allen, Rene Llewelyn, Marlene Schlottman, Mary Watts and Betty Ellingham came to camp as well, to spend some quality time with their students and work on their faith statements.

The Enneagram (Any-a-gram) is a Greek word meaning nine-pointed diagram. The Enneagram describes 9 basic personality types from the standpoint of why we do what we do – the motivation behind our behaviors.

Emmanuel VBS 2018
will be June 18-22
Yes, it's that time again! Vacation Bible School at Emmanuel is just around the corner!
Rolling River Rampage is the title of this year's program, encouraging young people to "experience the ride of a lifetime with God." Along the river, children will discover that life with God is an adventure full of wonder and surprise, and that they can trust God to be with them through anything.
Emmanuel's Vacation Bible School is a bit different than VBS programs of years ago. Knowing that many parents work and could not bring their children to a day program, Emmanuel's VBS is in the evening. And it's intergenerational! Many years, we have nearly as many teen, adult and senior volunteers as kids!
VBS begins at 5:30 p.m. each evening with a kid-friendly meal for participants and volunteers. VBS activities, like games, crafts, drama, storytelling, songs and snacks will happen from 6-8 p.m. nightly.
Volunteers are needed before the event to donate supplies, help with registration, publicity, prayer, and set-up and take-down. VBS takes over the whole building for the week of the event!
Then during the week, volunteers are needed lead groups, crafts, recreation, help in the kitchen, be actors or puppeteers, work in the multimedia booth, greet and register participants and more.
The registration link will be on Emmanuel's website and Facebook page soon. Meanwhile, fill out your purple volunteer interest page, or take an extra on the wooden kiosk in the church entry area. Return them to Adam Bissell, Beth Parknowitz or Bee Sena (or their mailboxes), and join us for a wild ride!

Food Bank Sunday

Load up those bags and bring them with you to church Sunday. It's the first Sunday, and that means
Food Bank Sunday.
Items in high demand at the Prescott Valley Food Bank are cereals, canned soups, canned fruits, tuna, canned meats, pasta, pasta sauce, refried beans, pinto beans. Other nonperishable foods are welcome, too. Just don't contribute open packages or food that is out of date.

HUSD community invited to Summit on Monday
|
I would like to take this moment to personally request your attendance at our 2018
Board-District-Community Summit on Monday, May 7, 2018.
We have a tradition of seeking community input as we review and establish our annual Board goals. This year is no different from that perspective.
What is different, and is the reason for my personal request to you, is that we are at the end of the first year of our collaboratively developed VISION 2020 Strategic Plan. This Summit will provide an update to our stakeholders as well as allow for community input into our next steps.
The Humboldt Unified School District (HUSD) has embarked on a transformational journey to completely and systemically reinvent itself. Not simply because we want to, but because we have to.
A new crop of kindergartners entered our schools in the fall of 2017; this is the class of 2030. This prompts the question, “What will our students need to know in 2030?” I believe that any district that is serious about preparing its students to be college, career and citizenship ready for the 21st century should be asking this question.
We have spent the past year focused on developing and implementing a system-wide vision of 21st century education, our
VISION 2020
. Our students have an expectation of what their educational experience should look like. They have an expectation that they will graduate with opportunities and skills needed for success in the 21st century.

outlines the action steps in place to ensure that our students graduate from the Humboldt Unified School District with opportunities and skills needed for the 21st century. This is our opportunity to review our progress and solicit your feedback for future steps.

Emmanuel’s
Youth Has Heart Group taught Sunday School on April 8
with a tour of the Holy Land on our church property. The tour included a chariot race, a walk through the Mount of Olives, a view of three crosses on Calvary Hill, baptism in the Jordan, and bringing Lazarus back from the dead!
It's been a busy spring for Youth Has Heart. In March, the group performed its first impromptu drama about the crucifixion. "Were You There" took place in a courtroom setting. Many of our youth were cast in multiple parts.

Prescott Habitat for Humanity is May Outreach
|
Our May Outreach Organization is Prescott Area Habitat for Humanity. A budgeted amount of money, plus designated contributions will go to PAHH.
Habitat for Humanity is an international, non-profit, ecumenical organization dedicated to building affordable housing in partnership with people in need. Habitat affiliate groups throughout the world build or renovate houses with low-income families and then sell the houses to these families at no profit and no interest.
A representative will be speaking during both worship services on Sunday, May 6 about the work of
Prescott Area Habitat for Humanity. And our own Bob Frey serves on the local board of directors. In April, the Prescott affiliate dedicated a house in Chino Valley for its 87th family.
How can you help? Besides donating money or helping build houses, Habitat needs volunteers for other committees. And if you shop at the Habitat for Humanity Restore 1061 Commerce Drive, Prescott, you support the work of building affordable homes for people who need them,

Many places to serve within the Body of Christ
When you gather with family, it's a natural response to bring a dish for dinner, set the table, wash the dishes and participate in welcoming others. It's no different for the Emmanuel faith family. It takes many hands, hearts and gifts to prepare for and do worship, serve others, teach children, care for our property and nearby areas, and more.
Here are some of the places Emmanuel needs assistance now and in the near future, and the contact people. Either reach out to them, call them from the number in your church directory, drop a note from the friendship register into the offering plate, or call the church office to be connected to them:

How shall we pray?
Regularly, our newsletter will feature some topics for your prayers.
Take time to share your own concerns with God. Consider prayer as a two-way conversation and allow God to speak to your heart, as well.
Take time to pray for:
- Our Call Committee and future pastor.
- The future bishop of the Grand Canyon Synod who will be elected at the Synod Assembly June 14-16 in Tucson.
- Our prayer list in Sunday's worship folder.
- Our adopted school, Liberty Traditional School -- its teachers, staff and students.
- Our monthly outreach, Prescott Area Habitat for Humanity, its staff and volunteers, Habitat families, and all those in need of affordable, safe shelter.
- The governor, legislators, school administrators, teachers, staff, parents and students, as they advocate and join together to provide adequate salaries for those who work with Arizona's children.
- Singers, ringers, staff musicians, and others that provide beautiful music for Emmanuel services.
- Sunday school teachers, confirmation leaders, Bible and book study leaders, who make the word of God come alive to youth and adults.
- And those people who haven't found Emmanuel yet -- maybe your neighbor, your co-worker, your friend or family member. Invite them so they can hear the good news of Jesus Christ as we worship and join together to serve.

Volunteers taking supplies to Navajo Lutheran Mission
On May 11, volunteers will take the long drive to the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission at Rock Point, AZ.
About 3,000 people live in the Rock Point area in the far northeast corner of Arizona, with other shopping and medical services hours away..
The mission, which has provided education, Christian worship and assistance to the Rock Point area, is in its 65th year. It consists of a school (the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission School, a worship center (the House of Prayer), a clinic, a cafe to provide meals like our interfaith meal, and other services. Emmanuel, along with other churches, has been doing outreach to the mission for many years.
Items are being collected now to take to this outreach. Items that are needed are personal hygiene products (such as soap, shampoo and deodorant), copy paper, and first-aid items (such as children's cough syrup, children's Tylenol and Band-Aids).
This time, their special request is for books for their library -- new or gently used children's books.
The Navajo Mission collection box is in the church entry area. Please place your donations there before May 11. Many thanks for your help!
