Spring Clean-Up
Rather than trying to find a date that will accommodate many different schedules I am starting a list of projects that can chipped away at over the next few weeks as people have time and energy:
-Skip Greenlaw has already agreed to pull the start cord on his lawnmower for the first mow of the season and will be enlisting his mowing compatriots to schedule the season of mowing.
- I am leaving a wheel barrow out back to aid in raking and moving back to the parking the gravel that gets dropped by the snow plow. Ruth Robinson has been the torch bearer for this week task over the years but another one or two shovel bearers are welcome to pitch in, I'm sure.
- Getting a head start on weeding the garden beds and adding compost to enrich the soil will inspire the garden designers among us. Perennial divisions are welcome.
- The stairs to the parish hall are calling out to be swept.
These chores will get us started. All suggestions for other tasks crying out for attention are welcome. Window washing, inside and out, is on the horizon. Call, text, or email me about anything to do with getting the work done in the most expeditious, joyous way.
Thanks!

Book Study on Thomas Merton
Thomas Merton, 1915-2018, bearer of many labels: Mystic, Social Activist, Teacher, Poet, Painter, Photographer, Prophet, Scholar, Diarist, Rebel, Hermit, Catholic, Contemplative, Christian Existentialist. Now, more than a century since his birth and months past the 50th anniversary of his death, people of diverse backgrounds and traditions continue to seek his wisdom. As the labels suggest, his legacy affords many avenues of approach.
We are planning a book study and discussion group to focus on a common text: Love and Living, edited by Naomi Burton Stone and Brother Patrick Hart, a selection of Merton's writings on a range of subjects and grounded in his core reality, Love.
Anne Cushman, former Deer Isle resident and long-time student of Merton,
will select the readings and facilitate discussions. Interests and needs of
participants will help to shape conversations.
These sessions will be held on June 17th, June 24th and July 1st at 2:30 in St. Brendan's Hall. The book, Love and Living, will be available at the Blue Hill Book Store or can be ordered online.

Fifth Sunday of Easter Sunday:
Today we begin the fifth week of celebrating the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Each Sunday in the fifty days between Easter and Pentecost, we explore the implications of Jesus' dying and rising for our lives.
Today we hear from John's Gospel some of the Lord's words on the night before his death. The Lord tells his friends that he is going away and gives them his final instructions, "the new commandment" to love one another as he loves us.
This Sunday's reading from the book of Revelation is a vision of the final consummation of God's Kingdom as the new Jerusalem. The redeemed rejoice, for God dwells with them and does away forever with death and grief and weeping.
Today's reading from Acts traces further the extension of the proclamation of Christ's resurrection. Peter describes to the leaders of the church in Jerusalem the astounding discovery that God's call is not only to Jews but to the Gentiles as well, as he tells of the conversion and baptism of Cornelius, the first Gentile Christian.
It is in our relationship of union with Christ in baptism and communion that his love for us is revealed. Our liturgy here equips us to carry out our larger liturgy, our work as God's people, in loving others through ministry, service, and prayer. In that way, the work of extending God's Kingdom will continue to spread in and through us, the Body of the Risen Christ, as we follow his command to love others as he loves us.

Icon of St. Brendan by Siri Beckman
Lord, we will trust you.
Help us to journey beyond the familiar and into the unknown.
Give us the faith to leave old ways and break new ground with you.
Christ of the mysteries, we trust you to be stronger than each storm
within us.
We will trust in the darkness and know that our times are in your hand.
Tune our spirit to the music of heaven, and somehow, make our obedience count for you.
-Prayer attributed to St. Brendan
