FAA Issues Updates to Drone Regulations             

There's a   new federal law (PDF) that describes how, when, and where you can fly drones for recreational purposes. It's important to note that recreational drone operations have been temporarily suspended within controlled airspace in all but two locations in Wisconsin while FAA works to make Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) available to recreational users. Be sure to visit the FAA site for the latest information.
 
Changes have also been made to certificated remote pilot/commercial operator requirements. More Wisconsin towered airports were recently added to the list of facilities using LAANC to provide authorization under Part 107 to fly in controlled airspace.
64th Annual Wisconsin Aviation Conference

The 64th Annual Wisconsin Aviation Conference was held at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center from May 5th-7th. O ver 200 conference attendees participated in sessions on Airport Special Events, Drones, Airfield Electrical Technology, Non-Aeronautical Development at Airports, ADSB, Pavement Condition, Wildlife and more! The aviation industry was well represented by a wide variety of industry experts who made themselves available to update our attendees on all of these important topics.
 
Next year's Conference will be hosted by the Sheboygan County Airport and held at the beautiful Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake, WI. The resort is located just a few miles away from Whistling Straits which will host the 2020 Ryder Cup!
 
The Wisconsin Aviation Conference is planned by a generous group of volunteers who are excited to help bring relevant industry information to their Wisconsin colleagues. WAC First Annual Silent Auction and Scholarship Awards
 
The first annual Silent Auction to support WAMA collegiate and professional development scholarships raised $2,945. Thank you to the following companies for your donations!

A $1,000 Professional Development Scholarship was awarded to Ronnie Sampson, Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport, to attend the AAAE/SC Chapter Loretta Scott, A.A.E. Accreditation/Certification Academy in 2020 to obtain his C.M. designation.
Aviation Education and Outreach

Do you have ideas for an aviation education event or program at your airport? Are you doing things already or know of partners who have ideas for a new project?
 
Later this summer, the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium will begin accepting proposals for the 2019 Aerospace Outreach Program and the Special Initiatives Program. Funds can be used for K-12 aviation-related activities and we encourage our airports and friends of airports to apply! More information is available on the WSGC website or by contacting Meredith Alt, WisDOT Aviation Education Program Manager.
 
Also this summer: there's still time for parents to enroll kids in a summer aviation program! Some programs include flying opportunities and all look to be a lot of fun. Please help spread the word about aviation camps and summer programs in your area.
 
For women aviators who will be up at AirVenture, the Girl Scouts in the Madison area are looking for volunteers to spend 1-2 hours on Wednesday, July 24th with a Girl Scout who is attending AirVenture. If you are (or know) an awesome lady who would like to encourage one of these girls, please contact Meredith Alt for more information!
AAAE ASOS School - Registration is Open!

WAMA has coordinated with the American Association of Airport Executives to host an Advanced ASOS School, September 10-11, 2019, at the Central Wisconsin Airport. This opportunity allows Wisconsin airports to get this important training while saving staff time and expensive travel costs by getting this training close to home. The 20 seats available to Wisconsin airports through WAMA have filled, but AAAE is still accepting registrations HERE. 
Legacy Striker Training

Green Bay - Austin Straubel International Airport will be hosting a 5-day Maintenance and Troubleshooting course for the Oshkosh Legacy Striker

2019 USDA Wildlife Hazard Management Training

The Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport will be hosting annual USDA Wildlife Hazard Management Training for aviation personnel on Wednesday, September 25th at 10am. For more information, please contact Matthew Leitner.
