First Year of ELD Soccer League a Success
Hillsdale's Team Won the League
The Hamdija "Andy" Hodzic ELD Soccer League was established in 2019 as a partnership between
SMUHSD and the San Mateo Police Activities league as an
opportunity to engage English Learner students in SMUHSD's English Language Development
programs outside of the classroom.
The majority of the participating students have been in the USA for less than two
years, and have made tremendous progress in
learning English and a new culture.
The purpose of the soccer league was to provide
students with an opportunity to represent their school doing
something they love and building community at the same
time.
The league is
named after Andy Hodzic, former Hillsdale
High soccer coach - an immigrant himself - and a fierce
advocate for the involvement of all students in athletics -
regardless of country of origin or skill level.
If you are interested in learning more about the Soccer League, email Samia Shoman at
[email protected].

Capuchino Interact Club Leads Volunteer Effort to Help Homeless
On Sunday May 5, Capuchino High School's Interact club participated in a grand act of kindness towards the local homeless community. They actively volunteer in community events throughout the year and plan and execute one big service project per year. For the past three years, this club has chosen to help the homeless for their annual service project. By making care packages that consist of a meal, a fruit, a snack, toiletries, a resource sheet with information for help, and a handwritten note, these students are able to provide short-term aid and long-term compassion. Their handmade packages show the receivers that they are cared for, not forgotten, and will be provided with help if they seek for it or ask for it.
The project, led by Capuchino High School students, was a collaboration with Mills High School Interact club and El Camino High School Interact club. The project was successful with the making of 266 total care packages with an extra 115 sandwiches and over 200 toiletries all donated to the Safe Harbor Shelter.
Capuchino High School's Interact club is a community service based club sponsored by the San Bruno Rotary Club.
