This is the last service presented by Interim Minister Rev. Joy Atkinson. In the sermon, Rev. Joy will wrap up her two-year interim ministry among us and bid us a fond farewell. The service will also celebrate Father's Day.

Interim Minister's Column Words of Joy

The time has come for me to say "goodbye" to all of you.
The last Sunday service I will conduct as your interim minister will be on June 17th. The next day, I am off to attend the annual General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist Association and UU Ministers Association Ministry Days in Kansas City. I will travel a bit afterwards, and return to UUCM briefly to officiate for the memorial service for Sigrid Altgelt on July 7th.
Before I became an interim minister sixteen years ago, I was a settled minister for 25 years. Although settled ministers must also at some point bid farewell to the congregations they serve, they don't usually start out knowing when the eventual "good-byes" will be uttered. We interims know from the outset that "hello" will be all-too-quickly followed by "goodbye."
But despite the fact that we are "temps," we come to feel connected to the congregations we serve, as a minister, interim or otherwise, naturally does with a congregation. I have felt a deep connection to you during these two years. Now, I must sever that connection to make way for your new minister, the Rev. Marcus Hartlief, who will form that special bond with you.
I will, finally, embark on the new life journey that is retirement. It seems fitting that I end my long ministerial career with you, since way back in 1971, while I was in seminary, I worked in this congregation doing a part-time, six-month internship. Although it was not my only internship, it was the first time that I ever served in a ministerial capacity in any congregation. I came back 31 years later for a year-long interim ministry-my second interim position. And now, this last time, I have completed two very busy years of interim ministry among you.
It has been a pleasure to serve you during these past two years as we worked on interim tasks and issues together. As I leave, I have great faith that you will grow, and thrive, and be the beacon of light you have told me you aspire to be in the larger Marin community.
May your summer be restful, and your future bright!

I will be trying something new this summer. I will have a break from UUCM from
June 17th - Aug 1st. I have worked every summer here the past five summers running a summer RE program of one sort or another. Two years ago we ran a one-week day camp which was very fun. We could do it again next year, but the volunteer team would need to start organizing in October/November.
So this summer we need volunteers to do some activities with the kids who do show up and often there will be a visiting family. We want to show the visitors that we do have respect for children's spiritual development and that we do have a children's program. I have had people say they were interested in providing an activity, but have not yet chosen a date. Please sign up on the

Last chance at chocolate and coffee until September. Stock up for Summer. The Fair Trade chocolate, cocoa, baking chocolate, and coffee which the youth group is selling will be for sale this Sunday, but not again until RE starts up again in the Fall. Cash and checks welcome. Help us reduce our stock and keep your chocolate larder full.
YRUU overnight this weekend
June 16th-17th. We are having one last get together as part of the UUCM calendar. We have several youths coming from other UU Congregations in the area. We will be testing out a new-to-us Wii, baking cookies, a small service project, worship in the dark, and hopefully a good night's sleep (right). We hope that parents will host a few YRUU events during the summer. Have a great summer and stay connected with friends, family, and community. Stay fresh. Stay woke. Stay connected.

Celebrate With Joy! Sunday, June 17

IT IS NOT TOO LATE... This coming SUNDAY, following the service, we will honor Rev. Joy Atkinson, who is concluding a successful 2 year interim ministry with us and beginning her own transition into retirement after 41 years of ministry.
We invite everyone reading this to write a letter, note, card - or pen a cartoon, poem, or drawing - in celebration of Rev. Joy. These will be included in a scrapbook we are creating.
Please be part of the process! Sharing a memory, reflection or funny anecdote can be done in just a few moments. (Really you will be amazed at what you can write in 5 minutes or less; and you will feel good about doing it and she will feel good seeing it). So there will be good all around.....

Two Opportunities to View General Assembly at UUCM
|

1)
The Ware Lecturer program with Brittany Packnett will be shown live in the Clara Barton Room Saturday June 23, 5:00 pm - 7 pm. Brittany Packnett is Teach For America's Vice President of National Community Alliances and co-founder of Campaign Zero, a policy platform to end police violence. Her popular TEDx talk, "It's about time to value Women of Color in Leadership" exemplifies the passionate calls to action and personal storytelling she shares with audiences.
2) Sunday Morning Worship will be shown on video after our Sunday Service June 24, 12 -1:30 pm. It will be led by The Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray, ninth president of the UUA, who is a leader in congregation-based community organizing efforts. After leading the UU response to Arizona's anti-immigrant laws in 2010, she became lead organizer for the Arizona Immigration Ministry and a key organizer of the 2012 Justice General Assembly.
Each year a talented group of choral singers perform at the Sunday Morning Worship for the General Assembly audience.

Highlights of UUCM Congregational Meeting - June 3

Highlights of the meeting were:
The slate for the next year's board and nominating committee were approved.
Congregational Delegates to General Assembly in Kansas City on June 20-24 were approved unanimously. The
proposed Operating Budget of $411,055 for Expenditures with Total Revenue of $398,803 for 2018-19 with a possible deficit of $13,000 was approved unanimously by the congregation and then several members pledged over $5,000 to reduce the deficit.
Certificates and praise were given to outstanding volunteers and various staff members were recognized.

Between mid-June and August regular Religious Exploration classes do not meet, but we like to have youth-friendly activities available for UUCM kids and visiting families at a table in the foyer. Do you have a craft, game, or outdoor activity for ages 6 to teens that you would be willing to share on one Sunday?

The rough scheduling is: 5:30-7:00 for silent auction and social hour (hors d'oeuvres, drinks); 7:00-8:30 for live auction and potluck dinner; 8:30-9:00 check out.

General Assembly Kansas City, Missouri
General Assembly is the annual meeting of our Unitarian Universalist Association. Attendees worship, witness, learn, connect, and make policy for the Association through democratic process. The 2018 General Assembly will be June 20-24 in Kansas City, Missouri. GA will offer more than 175 programming selections over the course of five days. Major worships this year will be lead by UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray and Rev. Sofia Betancourt.
