President's Message
A Farewell Address from Immediate Past-President Jeremy Hampton
I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for helping to make this such a great year. I am extraordinarily thankful to have had the opportunity to represent such an amazing membership base and to have served alongside such an amazing Board of Directors throughout this last year. I don’t think I have the literary skills to appropriately express my gratitude, so I thought the best way to thank these exceptionally hard working volunteers would be to list their myriad accomplishments throughout the year.

Inaugural Address from
President Tony Huke: Tony’s Tenets
A s mentioned in my remarks at our Society’s recent Spring Meeting, I have had the pleasure of serving on the MSHP board for the last six years. I have been able to witness leaders in our profession guide our Society through times of trouble, times of change and times of success. Working on this Board with past Presidents Daniel Good, Andy Smith, Diane McClaskey, Sarah Boyd, Laura Butkievich, and Jeremy Hampton have given me the blueprint for a successful year as President.

Preceptor Development:
Layered Learning in Pharmacy Practice
With the experiential program comprising at least 30% of the pharmacy curriculum, pharmacy preceptors may make use of the layered learning model (LLM) as an effective tool to juggle the demands of experiential instruction and patient care responsibilities at clinical sites. 1 At its most basic level, the LLM allows learners at varying levels of instruction to educate and learn from each other.

Best Practice Spotlight:
Pharmacist Providers in Primary Care
Kansas City VA Medical Center Diffusion of Excellence Project

The Kansas City VA (KCVA) has implemented a practice model that allows pharmacists to practice at the top of their scope in the primary care setting, resulting in increased utilization of pharmacists, offloading of primary care provider appointments, and improved patient outcomes.

Featured Clinical Topic:
Critical Care/Pulmonary/
Emergency Medicine
Push-Dose Pressor Utilization in the Emergency Department
Bolus dose vasopressors, also referred to as push-dose pressors (PDPs), have become a popular topic of discussion within the practice of Emergency Medicine and pre-hospital care. PDPs are so named because as the name implies they are not administered as an IV infusion, but as a volume of 0.5 to 2mL pushed slowly via syringe.

A Review of Ketamine in the Emergency Department
Ketamine was first described as an anesthetic and “chemical derivative” of phencyclidine (PCP) in 1965 by the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. 1 Ketamine, like PCP, has the capability of inducing a state of dissociative anesthesia as well as producing a strong analgesic and amnestic effect. 2,3

Naloxone: Storage Considerations, Stability in Extreme Temperatures, and Reversal Efficacy in Various Fentanyl Analogs
With the opioid epidemic claiming more than 91 lives per day in the United States, 1 and with three out of five drug overdoses including opioids, 2 the use of naloxone as an opioid reversal agent in overdose patients is likely to increase dramatically. Naloxone hydrochloride is a competitive antagonist of the mu opioid receptor and is intended to displace receptor-bound opioids. 7 In the setting of overdose, this dose-dependent antagonism can facilitate the reversal of opioid-induced respiratory depression, sedation, and hypotension.

Asymptomatic Bacteriuria
In January 2018, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) released a statement on urinary tract infections (UTI’s) to help distinguish the type of infection. According to the CDC, UTI’s are the fourth most common type of healthcare-associated infection, making up more than 12% of the infections reported by acute care hospitals. 1
