A LETTER FROM CRISTIN

Seven years ago, Doug Mo reached out to Teen Services with an exciting idea - the initiation of a fund-raising event - and he had a plan. He proposed to host an exclusive gathering at his home for 30 people to enjoy music, food, and a very special wine-tasting illuminated by Sommelier Chris Sawyer. Doug offered up his home, wine cellar, tasting room and some of his extraordinary wines and dubbed the event Cult Cab...

That was the start of Cowboy Cab - our annual, signature fund-raising event. People still talk about that original event at Doug's beautiful home, and this year, thanks once again to the generosity of Doug and his wife Marcia, Cult Cab returns. This will be just one of several auction items that you will not want to miss (see below).

As you know, Cowboy Cab is an important funding source for all of our programs and it is also tons of fun. I am always thrilled to see the smiles of all who attend and so proud of the teens who welcome and care for our guests - a perfect opportunity to demonstrate the skills and confidence gained through our Ready to Work program.

We look forward to seeing you all there!

With heartfelt thanks to all,
NEW FACES

Kim Enzensperger,
No Name Café Assistant
Kim grew up in Palo Alto and following her graduation from Chico State she joined the Sonoma Developmental Center where she ran their Community Action Volunteer Center . She then worked as a recreation therapist and taught special education for over 20 years. Kim owned several businesses called Sonoma Girlie Stuff for 12 years while also volunteering for the Sonoma International Film Festival, where she now serves as the Volunteer Coordinator. She has been volunteering with current Coordinator Harrison Mantas at the No Name Café for several months and will take over the Coordinator position in the new school year. She looks forward to bringing her expertise in business and education to teens at the Café.

Carol Hoover, Lovin' Oven Coordinator
Carol is a Natural Chef, certified at Bauman College in Berkeley. She earned a BA in Liberal Studies/Elementary Education at CSU Chico, working in a commercial kitchen and catering to help pay for books and rent. She served as the Head Chef at Lake Trails Base Camp on Oak Island, a small island near the Minnesota/Canada border, working with teen volunteers to feed 60-100 middle schoolers, high schoolers and staff attending the wilderness canoe camp. She has also been a Mentor Chef for the Ceres Community Project. She likes to cook because it makes people happy and teaching young people to cook not only makes them happy, it also gives them self-confidence, independence, and a feeling of accomplishment.

SALUTE TO PAT MEIER-JOHNSON AND RUSS JOHNSON!

From video, to photo, to print, Pat and Russ have volunteered their time and  expertise to bring the heart and soul of Teen Services to the community in which we work. They not only created an amazing video about Teen Services as part of an Impact100 project, they are always there when we need a promotional item or concept. You may remember the wonderful smiling faces that adorned the barn at our 2017 Cowboy Cab. This year we will have some new faces, equally inspiring and all courtesy of Pat and Russ.

Last October, we were pleased to announce that Pat and Russ were our 2017 Sonoma Valley Fund Star Volunteers. Due to the fires, the celebration honoring the nonprofit volunteers was postponed until just last week. We were all smiles as Pat and Russ finally accepted their award at a fun event held at Cornerstone. Many thanks to both of them!

OTHER NEWS AT TEEN SERVICES

Good times for the TSS Girls' Group

Each Friday afternoon, seven middle school girls gather to enjoy a variety of activities from scavenger hunts in the Sonoma Plaza to yoga at the Teen Center. The Girls' Group is funded by a generous gift from  Soroptomist International Sonoma Valley.

Operation Bicycle Valet Service Returns

TSS's Operation Bicycle and the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition have partnered once again to bring the bike valet and mobile repair station back to the Tuesday Night Farmers' Market for yet another year. Every Tuesday, from 5 p.m. - dusk, OB's teen staff and volunteers will be parking bikes, keeping them safe, and performing minor repairs. The valet station is located between City Hall and the Rose Garden and runs from May through the end of September

Congratulations to Alondra Perez!

In our April newsletter , we told you about Alondra, who was the lone girl who completed our welding and carpentry skills program held last summer. That program not only introduced her to new career possibilities, it also opened the doors to new opportunities. We are excited to announce that this summer Alondra will be attending the 2018 "Engineering Possibilities in College" summer program at Cal Poly.
