Message from our Executive Director

Welcome to the summer 2018 issue of the BC Hospitality Foundation newsletter! I know that many of us are looking forward to a busy summer ahead, but I'd like to take a quick look at what we've already accomplished this year.

The BCHF's annual fundraiser, Dish 'n Dazzle, took place in Vancouver on May 10th. The event was highly successful, with over 390 guests enjoying an evening of food, wine, and socializing. The Silent Auction raised over $11,000, the cocktail competition drew cheers from the crowd, and a lucky raffle winner will be taking 8 people to Joe Fortes for a great night out. Thanks to our wine sponsor Wines of Argentina, our spirits sponsors, the participating restaurants, and last but NOT least, all our fabulous volunteers, who made it happen! A full list of participating restaurants and sponsors can be found here

We're going to need additional assistance from volunteers for upcoming events this summer, so I hope you'll read the Call for Volunteers below and make time in your schedule to help out if you can.

In 2018 we've already given funds to 14 hospitality industry workers in need, and we anticipate more requests for assistance in the coming months. Although we currently have a number of fundraising programs and events in the works (see below), we're always looking for fresh ideas and opportunities to raise money, so please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 604-986-3262 if you have suggestions.

I hope you enjoy the summer ahead!

BCHF Scholarships

The BCHF's scholarship program is arguably less well known than our financial assistance program, but it's no less important to us. This year we've awarded a total of $34,000 to 22 students enrolled in qualifying sommelier, hospitality, and culinary training programs in BC. The recipients are a diverse group of individuals, ranging from a Grade 12 student who is already a Skills Canada regional gold medalist for the culinary arts, to a business school student who plans to combine hospitality with the field of law, to a hospitality professional who already has a decade of experience in sales & marketing, talent acquisition, and more.

While the scholarship money will help recipients with their expenses, the BCHF's Executive Director Dana Harris is also making a point of introducing each scholarship winner to the sponsor of the scholarship they're receiving. We believe that making a personal connection between the students and the sponsors is "as good as gold" when it comes to furthering students' future success in their chosen field, and we want to help them as much as we can.
